Etheridge caught in on-camera confrontation

Etheridge reacted poorly. I think there is no real question there. I do to an extent feel for him. Just because you are a public official does not mean people should be able to try and get an on camera interview any time they want. The kid was being a dick. That does not excuse Etheridge's behavior, but he was not the only one whose behavior was inappropriate.

So you are saying if the kid asked Obama the same question, it wouldn't be appropriate?

That should be the end of it, right there. 'Sorry, boys, I lost my cool. Come by the office and I'll give you 2 minutes.' Bam. Done.

But no-oooo Fox and Druge are going to have a field day blowing this wa-aaay out of proportion. (as the partisan far-righties have already done here)

This may be the end of his congressman career, but a stepping stone to a better position as one of the Obama czars for public relations with Israel. Attaboy, Congressmen, you showed those kids. Wait until those Israelis give you some mess.

So you are saying if the kid asked Obama the same question, it wouldn't be appropriate?

Obama would probably say, "Yes, I do support my agenda.":rofl

Obama would probably say, "Yes, I do support my agenda.":rofl

So how come Ethridge had such a problem? I mean, it wasn't a trick question - right? It's not like the kids asked him a question like "Do you support the Obama dummassessaywhat?" and start giggling. I'm glad you agree the question was appropriate for both Etheridge and the President. I'd assume you'd also support assault charges to be filed in this case...

Its now day 2, I have asked Hazlnut what he would have done had I grabbed him the way the senator grabbed that kid. His not answering demonstrates he is simply trolling, or he knows damn well that this senator was wrong, and instead of condemning it, he is a true believer and a "mein party uber alles" type of hack.

Meh... makes more sense then the invisible dude floating in the sky that watches me masterbate because he's omnipresent, that only gets angry with me when I do things wrong according to certain sects of his population that interperates his teachings differently (that were written by men and not him btw) and that ultimately leads to violence in it's extremes. Yeah... rather be a jedi... :)

Wow, nice job on bashing religion out of nowhere. You really had to force that one in.

uhm just because you can insult an entire demographic and act like a bigot, doesn't mean you should.

I find the comments about the blurred faces from posts here, the DNC, and liberal media all over pretty standard stuff. You see it time and time again. Rather than go after the facts or denounce corruption and inappropriate behavior, you see a movement to discredit and attack the journalist, citizen, or news outlet that exposed it. If you can't beat their information, then trash their name. I think it's very likely that they blurred their faces to avoid this hell-storm as much as possible. After all, they weren't professional journalists ready to take on the entire left. Don't blame them, but maybe they need to reconsider their priorities if they are going to be attempting these sorts of ambushes. Not that this was much of an ambush at all. They need to expect the possibility of being thrust into the spotlight. I expect they will be soon enough anyway.

Because at reporter school they teach you to identify yourself.

I'm giving my honest reaction to the video. I think it's funny watching two O'Keef wannabe's get the snot scared out them on their first outing.

I hope the congressman doesn't catch too much flack over this.

He looks like he was fed up with the teabag mentality (aren't we all?) and two little boys playing at being reporters just pushed him too far.

So instead of answering what you would do if I grabbed you like this senator did, you once again reduce yourself to the neanderthal mentality of debate with your vulgar mindset. I find your line of debate rather pathetic.

IIRC you were one of the biggest mouth foamers claiming that the Tea Party was "potentially" violent, and here you have one of yours actually being violent and like the sun rises every morning in the east, you demonstate your partisan hack hypocrisy.

Tucker, put it all in context.

the climate in DC, you're walking alone, two boys approach you and shove a camera in your face, asking teabag questions...

Not justified... but mitigates.

really? mitigates?

So your saying this senator was not completley in the wrong to assault these kids.

And it's apparent you are losing all composure reducing yourself to sexual fetishes, that are more suited for the sex and sexuality forum than here on the political side of DP, please control yourself.

Rev, come on, we already covered this. Not assault, battery.

And you were doing so well...

"Completely" in the wrong...? He overreacted to two O'Keef wannabe schmucks. He's guilty of being hot-headed.

But he gets a tip of my hat for making these two assholes wet their pants and shake with fear...

Oh come on hazlnut. It's quite a bit more than being just simply "hot-headed". If that were the case he simply would have yelled at them. He attacked them and deserves every bit of criticism he's getting. An average person would be in trouble for this, so why is a Congressman somehow above this?

Your ignorance of the law is a good smoke screen...

He gets a tip of the hat for doing something you'd piss your pants if it were done to you.... Which is why you cower from answering my question.

But it's good to see you tip your hat to violence.

I think a blogger would want to take credit for their video.

A college student would also have no reason not to identify themselves now.

Chances are good, these two guys are not who they appear to be.

At the same time, I agree that Etheridge was out of line and should be held accountable. Apparently his no-name opponent has already had a nice bump in cash donations in the last 24 hours.

It's a different world, gang. Anyone can carry a camera now. Expect more of this type of stuff to happen on both sides. Expect your candidates to become more and more insulated as a result. In the end what it does is annoys the politician and isolates them farther from the average person.

Pretty much the exact opposite of what's in our best interests or what our government was designed to do.

Big lols. This guy is a jerk.

I'd be interested in the what "teabag mentality" is. Somehow I doubt you know. But please enlighten us.

That tool James O'Keef has not got every pimple-face college freshman thinking he's Woodward and Bernstein...

These assholes walked up to a congressman, stuck a camera in his face, and asked a stupid question. The congressman was annoyed with the little boys, playing at their little boy games. And he quickly showed them he could kick both their punk asses back to Jr. College journalism school.

"We're doing a project." Then make an appointment, idiots!

This will be the lead story on Fox tonight.
It's hard to believe you are an attorney.

Not even the Congressman is attempting to argue he was in any way in the "right."

“I have seen the video posted on several blogs. I deeply and profoundly regret my reaction and I apologize to all involved. Throughout my many years of service to the people of North Carolina, I have always tried to treat people from all viewpoints with respect. No matter how intrusive and partisan our politics can become, this does not justify a poor response. I have and I will always work to promote a civil public discourse.”

What they guy did was idiotic.. was it assault, probably not really, but he could have and should have handled it better.

So I'm gonna pick up rev's question now because I want to see the answer from hazlnut: what would YOU, hazlnut, have done if rev did the same thing to you that Etheridge did to those kids? Would you be so flippant about dismissing it as a "hyuck hycuk hyuck...he sure showed me" situation?

I second the question and the assertion that it implies.

To be blunt, I don't think Hazlnut is being honest or displaying much character here. I think we all know what we'd do if physically accosted in that manner. Some might fight back, some might flee, some might sue, but we'd all react quite negatively and that's just common sense.

I think the portrayal of it as an acceptable response or a response that was appropriate is disingenuous - if not downright dishonest.

I don't think any of us, regardless of which party we affiliate with, could say this was an acceptable response. That said, I also think it's clear that the cameramen in question were indeed political plants and that they intended to provoke a negative response. I'd also be curious to see what the rest of the video (unedited) looked like.

The "cameramen" didn't state their names. They haven't filed a lawsuit. They didn't claim the video so they're probably not bloggers. They're also probably not actually college students. They're probably liars, and they were activists working for a political agenda. The longer they remain anonymous and the care they're putting into doing so shows circumstantial yet powerfully compelling evidence that this was a set-up.

That said, Etheridge did indeed walk right into it, reacted poorly, and there's really no excuse for his actions.

To take a stance other than that either lacks integrity, intelligence, or both.

I wonder if Groucho would agree with hazlnut.

I'd be curious if anybody working in the mental health field on this forum would agree that Etheridge displayed something remarkably similar to a psychotic or schizophrenic episode. Any discussion of this being a "political gaffe" seems extremely beside the point as Etheridge was clearly not playing with a full deck here. Every time he said "who are you" he seemed to me to be seeing something other than a kid reporter, like a shadowy foreign agent or a Body Snatcher or something. And the way that he hugged the kid to him with one arm for no apparent reason was craaaazy.
