.WASHINGTON (AFP) – Right-wing darling Sarah Palin accused US President Barack Obama on Sunday of leading a lax response to the Gulf of Mexico spill because he is too close to the big oil companies.
The former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor, who champions off-shore drilling, criticized the media for not drawing the link between Obama and big oil and said if this spill had happened under former Republican president George W. Bush the scrutiny would have been far tougher.
"I don't know why the question isn't asked by the mainstream media and by others if there's any connection with the contributions made to president Obama and his administration and the support by the oil companies to the administration," she told Fox News Sunday.
More than 3.5 million dollars has been given to candidates by BP over the last 20 years, with the largest single donation, 77,051 dollars, going to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.
Palin suggested this close relationship explained why Obama was, "taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there, and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the Gulf of Mexico."
Where are the Senate and House hearings? This is worse than Katrina. Obama is asleep, and doing nothing.

Are you being sarcastic because until almost 2000 people die and nearly 100 billion dollars of damages are done, I don't think you can make a convincing argument that its worse or even just as bad as Katrina.

"Sarah Palin was involved in that election, but I don't think, apparently, was paying a whole lot of attention," Gibbs said.

Then Gibbs turns around with another bald faced lie.

"If you look back at what happened in Katrina, the government wasn't there to respond to what was happening. That quite frankly was the problem.

It seems Gibbs cannot even grasp modern history, or doesn't care... knowing the press will cover his lame ass.

When referencing Katrina, he means Bush of course, but the problem was the local authorities. Bush offered assistance, monitored the situation, and then was lambasted for the incompetence of Mayor School Bus Nagin and the state.

Obama on the other hand was too busy doing what he loves to do. Smash his enemies (Republicans) on the campaign trail while the oil spill was well under way.

What has Obi done?
Where is his great leadership?
The superior judgment he claimed he had during the election?
Where is it?

If this were the military, Obi would be charged with dereliction of duty; sleeping at his guard post.

Only it wasn't Obama who was stationed at the post - it was BP.

For too long Congress has allowed the oil companies to regulate themselves. Because they only look at the bottom line and try to cut costs whenever they can, something like this was bound to happen sooner or later.

Also, Katrina was a natural disaster. There was nothing that could be done to stop or prevent the hurricane doing from what it was doing. This oil spill could have been totally preventable by installing a remote cut-off switch that BP uses in it's oil platforms off the coast of England. However, U.S. law does not require oil companies to use these, so BP didn't to save on costs.

For a third, the government response has been pretty fast for this oil spill, all things considered, or as fast as can be expected. It takes times to fix problems like these. But whenever Congress tries to pass laws that prevent these kinds of things, conservatives decry it as "more federal regulation on private businesses that will cause corporations that provide jobs to Americans to leave this country, and we can't have that!" So because conservatives block American legislation, I don't see why they're lambasting Obama for apparently not doing anything when the conservative position is that the government shouldn't get involved in such things.

Seriously how can anyone compare these two disasters? They are different in every important area, deaths, property damage, areas affected, people affected, response required, etc etc etc

The link doesn't work. :2wave:

Until you can prove that 2000 people died because of Bush (which IS your point), you can run along. You think $100B will cover the damage caused by this oil spill? I'll bet you do.

Sarah Palin...accusing Obama...of being in bed with big oil. Wow.
Next up: Larry Craig accuses his critics of being closet homosexuals.

Anyone find it funny that an Alaskan accusing someone of being in bed with big oil?

Interesting:

Obama is the top recipient of BP PAC & individual money over the past 20 years.

“If there's any connection there to President Obama taking so doggone long to get in there, to dive in there, and grasp the complexity and the potential tragedy that we are seeing here in the Gulf of Mexico -- now, if this was President Bush or if this were a Republican in office who hadn't received as much support even as President Obama has from B.P. and other oil companies, you know the mainstream media would be all over his case," she said.

Actually thats not my point. I don't blame Bush for any of the people who died during or as a result of Katrina. I'm just trying to grade and judge two disasters on their "merits" and I'm simply stating that its clear that this oil spill isn't as bad as hurricane Katrina.

How soon we forget that this is from the "drill baby drill" woman.

She's accusing him of being in bed with big oil while she's snuggling up to them from the other side of the bed.

However, administration lies and inactivity aren't helping things either... When does this administration take charge of anything other than banks, auto industries, and our liberties?

Its course of action has been similar to that of the Bush administration, which is let the government agencies tasked to handle disasters to do their jobs. Looking at the "reaction" of Bush to Katrina and Obama to this spill, neither had really done anything other than offer good words and nice speeches. Although Bush did that better than Obama has, but I think its easier to inspire people and look "bold" when people have actually died, but thats my opinion.

But fact is, disasters aren't areas where the president actually gets involvement in a meaningful way. Dealing with an oil spill or a hurricane is best left for 1) the established methods as both oil spills and hurricanes have occurred so many times that established methods have been created, and 2) people trained and working for the government who understand the disaster and how to deal with it better than the President ever will due to their education and training.

Obama for example is trained and educated as a lawyer, Bush has degrees in Business and History. But being a lawyer or businessman doesn't qualify you for being able to handle and management a disaster recovery effort, so in my opinion its better than both Bush and Obama have stuck to the speeches because both their administrators and our interests as citizens are better served by the appointed and/or elected people who handle these disasters, from FEMA to the coast guard, etc.

Did the blowhard from Alaska offer what she and McCain would have done to stop this tragedy? Seriously what would they have done.
Currently BP has done everything from thowing a hat over it to throwing golf balls at the damn leak and nothing is stopping it.

If she has the answer then why not tell us. She doesn't seem to have a problem with flapping her ugly lips so why not tell us the solution.

Her only solution was to have Senate hearings. Now, there is a brain task group for you . Oh yes, they would have it stopped in minutes. Perhaps we should stop the leak by dumping senators into the ocean and one former beauty queen.

When Obama loses Carville, it's time to start to take notice.

Huffington Post said:
"I'm as good a Democrat as most people, and I think this administration has done some good things. They are risking everything by this 'go along with BP' strategy they have that seems like, lackadaisical on this, and Doug is right, they seem like they're inconvenienced by this, this is some giant thing getting in their way and somehow or another, if you let BP handle it, it'll all go away. It's not going away. It's growing out there. It is a disaster of the first magnitude, and they've got to go to Plan B."

Obama and his administration is sitting back and waiting during possibly a huge disaster. The fact is we really don't know where the oil is. We estimate how much is spilling out into the Gulf but where's it all going? The majority of it is not washing up on the beaches. Where is it? Where's it going? What's it affecting? What are the implications? Who will ultimately be affected? What long term will be affected?

Don't know. And to sit back and just say "BP is handling it. Everything that can be done is being done." is a lie. If the WH wanted to, they could be putting many more resources out there finding out where this oil is going. Having daily assessments to the American people. Identifying the costs, bringing in additional experts and working WITH BP until this is fixed and THEN review, have Senate hearings, and get the lawyers involved. But like always, this Admin is ass backwards and pushed the lawyers out first and is waiting to see about the rest. They COULD do more but they're choosing not to and I want to know why?

What do people expect Obama to do?

So, exactly what would YOU do to stop the environmental disaster CAUSED BY BIG OIL'S GREED? Specifically, WHAT EXACTLY IS IT YOU OR THE CARIBOU BIMBO PROPOSE TO DO TO STOP THE OIL GUSHING FROM BP's SCREWUP?

You got nothin'.

What do people expect Obama to do?

I think I stated he would add more resources to find out where this oil is going, what it's doing to the environment, adding more resources to containment, add more thinkers to how to lessen the effects, identify long term effects, communicate on a daily basis about what's going on and what's being done and telling us what the Government is doing to protect the people this might affect.

That is Governments prime job right? Protection of it's people?

How do you know he hasn't been doing that?

communicate on a daily basis about what's going on and what's being done and telling us what the Government is doing to protect the people this might affect.

I don't see the importance of this. They don't need to tell us what they will do, they need to just do it and we can form our opinions on the situation on what they do or don't do ratehr than what they say.

Oh really? And exactly where do you think these "more resources" are going to come from? Should The President wave a magic wand to cover BP's ass?

Do any of you Big Oil apologists even begin to understand that NO Federal agency now in existence has the equipment for working at a depth of 5000 ft. below the ocean? Or (more likely) you just so freakin' blinded by your partisan BS that you don't give a crap about reality?

How do you know he hasn't been doing that?
Well, I know it because it's not being communicated. You see, politicians don't do a damn thing unless they get credit for it and when do something, they let the people KNOW they are doing something so they can use it to their advantage later.

If like you say he's doing that, can you point me to the evidence he's doing it? If he is doing it I want to give him full credit.

Are you serious or ... just spinning for the lack of action?

She should talk, now, though, eh?

"Drill baby Drill
Drill baby Drill"

I remember quite clearly that being the mantra coming out of her mouth.

So who's screwing big-oil? I think it's obvious.

When it comes down to it this incident plays into Obama's anti-oil favor and works against the 'pro-oil' corner. The less Obama actually does, and successfully dishes off onto others (like he's done with everything else- Blaming Bush for sunspots) then he's full of crap, but will be held in higher faith.
