'North Korean torpedo' sank South's navy ship - report

The Chinese have repeatedly told King Jong Jackoff to behave. He has failed to listen and now ... his ass will get handed to him while the Chinese stand by and watch.

Sorry but China is NEVER going to let the U.S. crawl up next to their border, so they will not allow an attack by the U.S. to happen.

Who said it would be the U.S.? At any rate, the Chinese dislike Kim Jong Ill as much as the rest of the world.

China may dislike him, but they prefer him at their borders and not any other country.

Nobody else will be on their border. The North will no longer exist. Korea will be one country again.

We don't need to crawl up to their borders. This is the 21st century, remember.

They do not want South Korea controlling the Peninsula, which is what effectively will happen. After a ****load of civilian casualties of course.

Again, this is a scenario, that South Korea will not do, nor will the U.s. or any other country. North Korea will not be attacked or toppled over this, bank on it.

This may be the 21st century, but the mindset is they will not allow another country to be at their borders.

Borders don't mean much in this day and age. The great wall of china is nothing but a tourist trap, now.

I don't understand how South Korea can not retaliate militarily here. It makes them look very weak if they don't.

Could you imagine if this had happened to the U.S, Great Britain etc.? The North threatening all out war if the South retaliates and then the South doing nothing will inevitably lead to more threats and blackmail by force.

I'm by no means a warmonger, and understand the consequences if war were to break out in Korea. I just don't know how a country can let the death of 46 servicemen occur without repercussions.

Is there any word as to whether there is a national outcry, or call to arms over this?

Seoul would be leveled in a few hours if the Rep. of Korea tried ANY military option against the DPRK...

North Korea deserves to be toppled. Not by us, but by South Korea. North Korea just can't match the military strength of South Korea. The only problem is if China gets involved. How are relations between China and South Korea?

What are you talking about? It is the South that can't match the military strength of the DPRK, at least in the short term. Seoul would be leveled and the DPRK would immediately make inroads into the south right through the tripwire U.S. force. Anyone who things the South would win in the short term is delusional. In the long term, sans PRC engagement, the South would win because the DPRK wouldn't be able to provision its large army for an extended conflict in the way the ROK could, but large parts of the northern ROK would be wasted...

What would the north use to finance the war, chickens?

The Chinese will NOT stand by and watch if there is a military response by the ROK, USA and potentially Japan. The last thing the PRC wants is a U.S.-friendly ROK on the Yalu River with U.S. troops. The PRC has the DPRKs back.

Please read my post. In the short term, the North would level Seoul and other cities in the north of the ROK and make short-term devestating advances into the ROK. It has one of the world's largest standing armies and has short-range missiles and other war material at the ready. Over the longer term, you are right. They wouldn't be able to pay for an extended war. However, 1. the damage would already be done to Seoul and other ROK cities and 2. the PRC has the DPRKs back.

I don't like war. I was just saying, you know.

I don't like it either. None of the options here are good.

1. War, northern ROK gets leveled, PRC gets DPRK back -- US and PRC get into an extended conflict over the Korean Peninsula -- or more likely, after northern ROK gets leveled, USA and PRC agree to revert to the status quo ante

2. No war -- DPRK gets away with their crimes (again) and everything continues as they have...

Both of these options SUCK!!!

Technically the two Koreas are still at war with each other, personally I would like to the North Korea's leadership obliterated from the earth, it's the most oppressive communist nation in the world. The facts are that during this Korean cease fire, North Korea committed an act of war and should be dealt with.

How do you deal with it that doesn't result in the utter obliteration of one of Asia's largest cities?

You strike at North Koreas military facilities and cripple them from launching anything towards Seoul. All I know is that diplomacy isn't going to work.

You send ANYTHING in the air toward the DPRK and those missiles will launch. PRC will enter and we will have a real messy situation over the DPRK. Not feasible...

How is it not feasible? Maybe they could set up some sort of missile defense shield. All I know is that something must be done. Kim Jung Il is a crazy mass murderer near his death, and I honestly think he would do something crazy before he dies just to go out with a bang and be remembered for something.

Missile defense shield? Against all of those missiles? Do you have ANY conception of the military assets Kim Jong-Il has pointed at South Korea? He could level Seoul within an hour. Why do you think South Korean leaders have toyed with the idea of moving the capital further south for years?

One thing to our advantage in a war with north korea is that it would be fought conventionally like when the US invaded Iraq in two different wars.

Lots and lots of good easy targets.

Just saying, again.

Why do you think it would be fought conventionally? Even if it started that way, do you think the North Koreans would refrain from using their nuclear weapons?
