A North Korean submarine's torpedo sank a South Korean navy ship on 26 March causing the loss of 46 sailors, an international report has found.

Investigators said they had discovered part of the torpedo on the sea floor and it carried lettering that matched a North Korean design.

Pyongyang rejected the claim as a "fabrication", South Korea's Yonhap agency reported.

It said the North threatened war if sanctions were imposed by the South.

But South Korean President Lee Myung-bak pledged to take "stern action" against the North.

The White House described the sinking of the ship as an "act of aggression" by North Korea that challenged peace.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the report was "deeply troubling".

The Cheonan went down near the disputed inter-Korean maritime border, raising tension between the two nations, which technically remain at war.

The shattered wreck of the 1,200-tonne gunboat was later winched to the surface, in two pieces, for examination.

This is some serious **** the repercussions could be dire, I mean it's not as if they could go to war... could they? Highly doubt it, but this has serious implications not only on South Korea but for you in the US too.

It is the Norths way of saying, look we need more aid.

And you know what?

US Politicians are just stupid enough to give that aid.

There is no way that the U.S. government or the ROK would go to war over this.

Firstly, this sort of stuff has been happening for years. Take the Pueblo, or the DPRK's tunnel under the DMZ in 1978, for instance.

Secondly, everyone realises that civilian casualties would be immense. The huge destabilisation that would come from removing the current North Korean regime would be an absolute nightmare for all parties involved. The North might be crazy enough to start a war, but that's unlikely, and the West certainly isn't. Which is why the U.S. has to try to pacify this puerile regime through the lure of more foreign aid.

It's possible that they would go to war but in this case they will probably just increase military spending and be on a higher guard. You're right, it could have an impact on people in the U.S. since we like to fight other people's wars. That is, if they someday go to war with the north.

Now, this is something really to go to war for. It's time to kill that little bastard.:blastem:

id rather just have him taken out without a war.. id like to think that covert/cloak and dagger operations are still occuring..

*just breathe... hold... pull.. bug out and go get medal for service to humanity*

This is why President Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. needs to rescind the executive order from the Carter years that forbids targeted assassination of heads of state. Kim Jung-Il needs a hole in his head.

I don't understand how South Korea can not retaliate militarily here. It makes them look very weak if they don't.

Could you imagine if this had happened to the U.S, Great Britain etc.? The North threatening all out war if the South retaliates and then the South doing nothing will inevitably lead to more threats and blackmail by force.

I'm by no means a warmonger, and understand the consequences if war were to break out in Korea. I just don't know how a country can let the death of 46 servicemen occur without repercussions.

Is there any word as to whether there is a national outcry, or call to arms over this?

At the very least I hope reaffirms to the people of South Korea just how big a threat to them North Korea is. I've heard that some South Koreans seem to believe that the country could be happily re-united if not for the presence of the US military.

This is the perfect time for North Korea though. The world's economy sucks and the US forces are tied down in other areas of the world.

What exactly would that attaın though? I cant see thıngs gettıng much better under hıs son (unless he pulls a Juan Carlos, unlikely but we can hope)

One word. China. That one word will let North Korea get off scott-free.

And there must not be any phones are communication equipment to make his desires known, and no advisers keeping him up to date on the issue. I mean, if he had those things, it would make your complaint meaningless...

Yeah! And look at all of those press conferences he's held on this issue and oh so many others!

Oh wait....

Not giving a press conference on it means he is neglecting it?

I hope Obama keeps his mouth shut until SK reveals their response. We are not the world police and it's not our place to keep Il's hands off of the south. We are South Korea's ally, and we should support them in whatever action they take, but we should not take the lead. If the South decides to wuss out and let this slide, we wouldn't want Obama beating the war drums only to find that no war is forthcoming. Similarly if he sits there pledging sanctions and such only to find out that South Korea has decided on a full out invasion, we'd end up looking weak. For the moment we should do exactly what we're doing - stand behind the findings of the investigation and pledge our support for South Korea.

Moderator's Warning:
How about we talk about North Korea?

North Korea deserves to be toppled. Not by us, but by South Korea. North Korea just can't match the military strength of South Korea. The only problem is if China gets involved. How are relations between China and South Korea?

Of course we didn't have that type of technology in 2005.

I'm sorry but they can't. Trying to engage North Korea for any nation is a perrilous task, they do have millions of fanatical and slave driven soldiers who will fight til the end in fear. They fear their own superiors more than the enemy.

To fight North Korea, it would be a hell of a task, with casaulties we haven't seen since Vietnam. A task no one wants to carry out.
