Does anyone find it amusing that they used a discussion on human rights with China to bash Arizona's new anti-illegal immigration law?

Posner said in addition to talks on freedom of religion and expression, labor rights and rule of law, officials also discussed Chinese complaints about problems with U.S. human rights, which have included crime, poverty, homelessness and racial discrimination.

He said U.S. officials did not whitewash the American record and in fact raised on its own a new immigration law in Arizona that requires police to ask about a person's immigration status if there is suspicion the person is in the country illegally.

We will not be able to successfully engage China on issues of broader reform as long as we regard China the way we regarded the Soviet Union. China's system is not totalitarian, dictatorial, or otherwise anti-democratic. The problems in China are of an entirely different nature.

Until we have a leader who truly recognizes this China will always feel reluctant to engage the U.S. on the matter. It is high time we get over the abuse the term communism has received from faux advocates, fascists acting under the guise of communism, and recognize the inherently democratic principles China's current government was founded on.

Only when we stop insisting China adopt our exact system of democracy will we be able to have strong relations with them.
