Ronnie James Dio has died, presumably of Cancer. Dio was a true showman, having sung for Black Sabbath, Richie Blackmore's band Rainbow, and had a voice that could be described as operatic. It was also dio that invented the devil hand gesture. Dio was heavily metal personified, and was a major contributor to the genre.

You will be missed, Ronnie.

Article is here.

Don't really like metal, but the guy sounds like a legend. RIP Sir.

I hate 99% of metal and Black Sabbath, but may he rest in peace. My prayers go towards his family and friends as they mourn their loss (also to his loyal fans).

The world of Metal is quieter for his passing.

I almost cried when I heard about this. Black Sabbath with Ronnie got me into music and metal in the first place and I've rocked some of the best and worst times of my life with his music.

Apparently I'm not the only one who feels that way either :)

Plus, Ronnie's music led me to Motorhead. I have three favorite bands of all time; Flogging Molly, Motorhead, and Rise Against :)

Metal still salutes him beyond the grave.

CATCH THE RAINBOW- live album. His best song. My favorite.

A small man in stature but a GIANT of metal. RJD is one of the main cogs in the metal wheel and it never would have the edge it did without his work, along with the pioneers that came behind him.

I'd say "Gates of Babylon" is my favorite performance, with "Stargazer" being an extremely close second, there just wasn't much he did that was lacking.

Children of the Sea - When I played for Viper, we covered that song, and it was one of my favorites.

Oh god yes! Another great one, in fact that is easily pinpointed as the epicenter of the harder sounds of the eighties.

Two words: Die Young

I think the brilliance of Dio was that it's so hard to pin down exactly where he peaked, some bands kind of have that flash of brilliance then burn out. Dio just kept rockin' and album after album, incarnation after incarnation it was always RJD and it was always exceptional.

How about Neon Knights? That pretty much covered what the heavy metal lifestyle was all about. That was also a great balls-to-the-wall song. Another one I liked a lot was Holy Diver.

Rock and Roll Children and We Rock were exceptional too.
