Los Angeles to boycott Arizona over immigration law | Reuters

City Council members who voted 13-1 in favor of the punitive measure said it could affect about $8 million in contracts with Arizona, but Los Angeles must first decide which of those agreements it can break without triggering lawsuits.

Another $50 million in contracts will remain in place but the council directed city department heads to refrain from doing future business with Arizona or companies headquartered there whenever possible.

A nationwide study by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press released on Wednesday found that 59 percent of adults approve of Arizona's new law, while just 25 percent support President Barack Obama's immigration policy.

Seventy-three percent of those surveyed said they backed a measure requiring people to produce documents verifying their legal status if police ask for them, while 67 percent approve of allowing police to detain anyone who cannot verify that they are in the country legally.

Setting aside the oddity of the idea, my mind was blown by this:

"I cannot go to Arizona today without a passport," Councilman Ed Reyes said before the vote. "If I come across an officer who's had a bad day and feels the picture on my ID is not me, I could be summarily deported -- no questions asked. That is not American."

How stupid can you be? If you don't understand how the bill works, maybe you shouldn't be voting on whether to boycott an entire state over it.

This is just foolish and stupid. Shame on Los Angales for acting like a tantruming child. This is interesting

Can I say that "I can't go to Los Angales and get around without knowing Spanish"? These guys are acting all butt hurt over a law that the Republicans have passed that they aren't happy with. Who boycotts a state over something that isn't their business? They are acting like little children throwing hissy fits.

Although Arizona can't deport anyone, thereby making these people morons (which is why they got into government likely), people are free to boycott anything they wish.

But if they are working in the public interest, shouldn't they work in the realm of FACTS and not some fantasy spewed by hate-filled liberals?

My own city is making me puke. This is a city that feels the pinch because of illegal immigration probably even moreso than Arizona, and we're going to boycott a city that is doing something about it? Shame on my city council. They've run this city to the ground. We're about to go bankrupt and they're going to lecture Arizona about morality?

Dear Los Angeles City Counsel, thanks for boycotting Arizona. No, seriously, it's a really great use of your time. I know you're super, amazing busy what with carrying out this meaningless grandstanding, but do you think you could find the time to build a train that connects the city and extends the rest of the train all the way to the airport instead of stopping it just two miles before it in order to please the taxi unions you ****ing assholes?

Thanks.

Love,
Cardinal

Since when do facts matter to either side? Both sides are totally full of crap most of the time. You likely just gloss over it when it's your side.

Don't forget the parking lots by LAX. They lobbied hard to keep it that way too.

But, to be realistic, the reason it goes south instead of heading north into LAX was that El Segundo was a major center of the aerospace industry which was booming in the 1980s. Then the Soviet Union collapsed, and so did the industry. Now it's kind of useless heading south and the lack of a connection to LAX seems like a shame. It wasn't a shame at the time it was being planned.

If it "isn't their business"...then what business does Los Angeles have doing business with Arizona?

I'm proud that my hometown has taken this stand.

Now we need to get the Dodgers to move their spring training back to Florida and out of Arizona.

GET OUT OF MY CITY!

I jest, of course, slightly.

So you are proud of your hometown lying to the public and punishing a state in the name of partisanship? Los Angales has no right to step in and try to twist Arizona's arm over a good law. They may have the legal right, but they are using it and acting like partisan children. They are lying to the public and hurting a state over an issue that doesn't apply to them.

That's all fine and well except these aren't "people". These are our elected officials throwing a priss fit with our money and trying to use our taxes to hurt another state.

I'm not ok with that.

I don't think this is good policy, but they have the right.

How is it a productive use of our city officials' time and resources to throw a butthurt tantrum over something going on in Arizona? In case you hadn't noticed, our city is bankrupt as it is and should be making decisions based on economics, not what leverage they can hold over another state.

If we weren't in economically dire straits right now, I would less problem with it. But that's not the case and it's idiotic stunts like this rather than actually showing the care to govern that got us here in the first place.

I doubt the boycott will cost Los Angeles much money. To begin with, just contract some other state.

For all we know, it is a pretense to get out of economic relations with Arizona while 'keeping a moral high ground'.

If they are exploring ways to cancel millions in contracts without incurring legal problems, then they are already spending money paying city attorneys to make those inquiries.

That's fine if the bid is lower. Right now, every decision needs to be based on cost and the city's abyssmal budget shortfalls, not on what Arizona's immigration stance is.

The bid would undoubtedly be lower now, since Arizona's work will no longer be done by illegal aliens. LOL.

Public attorneys get paid no matter what they are doing and already tend to be vastly overworked, especially in California. I doubt they'll hire new ones, they'll just displace the existing case loads among the already existing pool.

They probably already know it is.

Well, it looks like I will be calling their city too. Already did San Diego. Im getting really ticked at these La Raza a-holes.

These are just ignorant a-holes that think that everything is racist and that we can't do anything that proportionately affects minorities more negatively than whites, even if it is just defending current law.

It appears that a good number of city council people in the City of Angels have immigrants for parents.

Los Anheleeze

figure it out.

That doesn't change the fact that they are paying city attorneys to look for ways out of these contracts when those resources could be better spent.

My dad is an immigrant, which may be why I support a free immigration policy, but not open boarders. He and I both agree on that. We can't let criminals over.

Yeap, and I am proud that they are taking a stand against an unjust law...
