Students Wearing American Flag Shirts Sent Home

I agree that this is ridiculous, but has there been a history of ethnic conflict on the school campus? The boys admittedly were wearing the shirt to get a rise out of Latino students and potentially start a conflict.

However, the principal needs to take a class on dress code do's and don'ts.

But it doesn't matter WHY they wore it. The why is irrelevant.

Of course I did, they were on many menus! There was a place we went to frequently because it was close. And they had AWESOME fajitas. They made the tortillas right there in front of us in a stone oven and brought a massive platter of beef, pork, chicken, and shrimp, onions, peppers, beans, pico de gallo, and a **** ton of other sauces. More than the two of us could eat and all for about $5.

Fajitas are mexican food, for people who don't like mexican food. ;)

(I like mexican food, I also like fajitas though. ;) )

I did learn that tacos in Mexico and tacos here are two VERY different things. Note: Tacos there are ****loads better once you get past the fact that they're not what *we* would call tacos.

Oh I don't eat American tacos.... I make em authentic.....

Tacos mexicanos de camarón

I made these yesterday.

Did you have the "Tacos de Cabeza"? YUMMMM....

Oh, and there's no chili. ANYWHERE.

Nope, that's tex mex. now there are stews that go by the name of "chili" but that refers to the chili peppers used in making these stews.

Basically, I learned the vast difference between American Mexican food and actual Mexican food.

Yeah there is a huge difference. My favorite region of mexican food is oaxacan.

Actually, it isn't irrelevant. Motive & effect are extremely important in school dress code issues.

For instance, I've seen schools ban wearing of rosaries and other religious symbols because gang members were using them to identify their affiliation at school (rosaries in the color of the usually latino gangs, the six-pointed star of david used to signify folks affiliation).

If the school deems the attire disruptive to the school climate, and is able to show that this has been the case by documenting exactly how the garment or item has been disruptive, the school can ban the attire.

The rights of students to free expression is trumped by the need to keep the school safe, and that has been consistently upheld in court.

You can find them in the U.S. if you know where to look. Anyplace that has "taqueria" may serve actual tacos.

mmmm....carnitas tacos and tacos carne asada. Mmmmmmmmm.

tacos al pastor FTW!

Yup go to any latin section of a town of find a latin market, often they have "taqueria" on the sign, this is a place to go.

There is chili, but it's not made with ground beef. Chili verde is a mexican pork stew cooked with green (usually anaheim) chilis. delicious.

NM Green Chili. (I know NM, but hatch > anehiems)

Real Mexican food is about 10,000 times better than Americanized versions. And Mexican strip clubs have donkeys.

+1

Mmm....with lime, fresh onions, and chopped cilantro. This thread is making me hungry.

I don't put potatoes in my chili verde, and I roast my peppers in the oven on broil, but basically the same deal.

Ninety percent of Hispanics don't even know what Cinco de Mayo is based on.

That's what sad.

Cilantro and lime is one of my favorite flavor profiles.

I order big jims and sandias from NM and flame roast em myself. also I like the potatoes as it gives the chili a bit more texture.

Those look gooood.

We used to go get arrachera tacos at this place, we had to take a bus for miles to get to it, but it was SOOOO worth it. The tacos were awesome and I could never finish one myself, they were so huge.

EEEWWWWWW no. LOL

Yeah, I was disappointed about that too, because I LOVE chili. But the arrachera tacos made up for it. ;)

I was only in the one part of Mexico, Manzanillo. (minus the day trip to Cancuun when I was on a cruise)

That's not the same thing. You would have a point if flag t-shirts were banned in the school, but they were not. Since the clothing is not banned, the reasons they wore perfectly acceptable t-shirts are irrelevant. The shirts were 'legal' attire in the school. If some 'latino' gets pissed about seeing an American flag, well... he can just get pissed and get suspended if he starts a physical altercation.

Yeah, it's just not what *I* would call chili and I like our chili. LOL

It is 10000 times better! But I didn't see any donkeys at the strip clubs. The main difference was that we were allowed to touch the girls.

I Proudly Fly two Flags over My Shop. the American flag, and the Lone Star of Texas. Want to come try and take them down?? Be my guest.

We're not in disagreement. I'm just curious about the principal's mental reasoning. I strongly suspect that this is linked to zero tolerance idiocy.

Flank steak is wonderful in mexican flavors..

I think many schools have adopted a policy of no pictures, or advertisements on shirts. Head bands have always been a no-no.

I stand by what I say. It's only liberals who pull this crap.

It's good to know I won't be taking your words seriously anymore. Buh-bye.

This is sick, this principle should be fired, and the chicanos who are all but hurt about Americans wearing the American flag should STFU and get a life or repatriate to that dump of a country they came from.

Such tolerance from the Mehikana.
They come here, and expect us to bow to their non-holiday?

Obama perhaps... but nobody else need to.

.

What is this CA? It's retarded. Both in getting in trouble for wearing American flags and then people wanting an apology. Sorry, but Cinco de Mayo ain't our holiday. It's cool to have celebrations and such, it's a free country. But you can't demand that everyone observe it or wear Mexican flag colors or whatever. There's no right against being offended, people do "offensive" things all the time. So some kids had American flags? Last I checked, it was America, land of the free, they weren't hurting anyone so there was no reason for them to get into trouble.

This is just PC **** run amuck. One reason why I refuse to bend knee to the PC Nazis.

I would NEVER have a problem with anyone displaying the colors or flag of their country on any of our holidays. It wouldn't occur to me to be offended.

What in the hell is wrong with you? It's un-American not to be offended about something.

Oh, and there's no chili. ANYWHERE.

We had a local place that made REAL Mexican food a few years ago. It was just a little dive, and had no atmosphere to speak of, and the best damn Mexican food I've ever had. Unfortunately, the gringos around here didn't agree with me, and the place went out of business. As for chili, that's right. In New Mexico, when you ask for chili, it's either red or green, and it's made from chili's- imagine that. None of the stuff you buy in a can.

The boys said the administrators called their T-shirts "incendiary" that would lead to fights on campus.

Interesting.

"They said we could wear it on any other day," Daniel Galli said, "but today is sensitive to Mexican-Americans because it's supposed to be their holiday so we were not allowed to wear it today."

Why would Mexican-AMERICANS see a T-shirt with the AMERICAN flag as incendiary?

What this proves is that there are many Hispanics that have no wish to assimilate.

Interesting.

Why would Mexican-AMERICANS see a T-shirt with the AMERICAN flag as incendiary?

Exactly.
Mehikana-Americano.
Not Americans.

They have failed to assimilate, and this school has failed at its job of fostering tolerance, assimilation and even a tad of humor.

More than sad.
