NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Opryland's 1,500 guests were spending the night in a high school to escape rising floodwaters that threatened other areas of downtown hit by devastating thunderstorms that slammed Tennessee and northern Mississippi, killing at least 19 people.
Flooding and damage was so widespread in Tennessee that Bredesen asked the state's Army National Guard to help and dozens of vehicles and personnel were put to work rescuing stranded residents. Nashville Mayor Karl Dean reported more than 1,000 water rescues in the city alone, including that of a policeman who became trapped and clung to a tree for an hour before firefighters plucked him from the flood waters.

Nashville and areas nearby in the South East were recently devastated by a massive record breaking storm. I live here in Nashville and have even taken pictures of flood damage in my own neighborhood. So far we have yet to hear from the Federal government, and FEMA says they will come down and assess damages on May 10. Nashville has not seen such devastating weather before. Many schools are being converted into shelters (including my university) and things are in chaos. There is mass flooding and critical damages to the roads here as well. It has rained for roughly three straight days with the sun finally coming out today. So far the death toll is at 19, but they predict that it will rise. They also have been recovering bodies of storm victims and anticipate finding more. This is truly a devastating time for my city.

Thanks, I will. And we definitely need the help. I think I'll post some pictures up I took on my phone of some of the damages just in my neighborhood and near where I live. It's really catastrophic.

I just talked to my friend who goes to school at Rhodes and he has said it is pretty wild. Stay safe all of you in the path of these storms.

I try not to get my panties in a bunch, but the lack of national coverage of this is honestly pretty offensive.

This is a once-in-a-1000-years event and the damage is going to be in the billions. In my neighborhood alone, four bodies have been recovered. Thankfully, we were on just high enough ground to not be terribly effected (lost the water heater and the HVAC unit; but that was it). The water subsided about eight feet from the house. I do have several good friends though who have lost everything they owned; and because they weren't in flood plains, they didn't have flood insurance.

As of today, Obama has declared several counties Disaster Areas so federal relief is on the way (eventually - we all know how slow that can be).

For those who aren't aware of how bad it was; here's video from TDOT cameras on I-24 just outside Nashville.

My intern lives in that neighborhood, thankfully on the 2nd floor. She was trapped, but safe.

It's been surreal.

If anyone would like to give, Text 'REDCROSS' to 90999 to donate $10 to disaster relief.
