COPS: Times Square Car Bomber Got the Wrong Fertilizer

I don't give a crap who Taylor is, her arguments are illogical.

Typical Catz. Can't debate the facts so you conclude everyone is wrong except you without supporting evidence.

BTW, Taylor is African American. Still want to go after him for defending whitey? :rofl

Actually, I have considerable familiarity with homegrown terrorists in the U.S., moreso perhaps that probably anyone else on this board, since I've actually worked directly with and interviewed a few.

Ah yes. The "extreme levels of smartness" argument/claim. Always a crowd pleaser :rofl

I think both types of terrorists are a threat. As McVeigh proved, there are some very angry, white bread terrorists who can pull off quite a large scale event. Then, as 911 illustrated, Muslim terrorists have a bigger potential. What is really frightening is the threat of biological or nuclear terrorism, and I think the well-funded Islamists are more threatening on that account.

There is a brewing anti-government, homespun movement though. That is a reality.

We're a few years from some ugly, ugly times. If this guy uses the right fertilizer, and another couple home-grown terrorists are successful, survival instincts are going to kick in, and things are going to get out of hand.

That is EXACTLY what the Islamic fundamentalists are trying to create.

Sometimes I dont follow these threads. It was'nt a domestic terrorist right- Taliban took Credit ? Catz whats your post about you did interview them or is this a joke?

Taliban will also take credit for anything bad that takes place in the U.S. Not saying it wasn't them because the investigation isn't complete yet. But to take their word that they were the ones that did it isn't the smart thing to do.

Like the Fort Hood fiasco this is another major screw up by the Obama administration and we are damn lucky that this clown was clueless in what he was doing or we would have had another huge terrorist attack in New York city..........

Plus the guy that did not properly ignite his Underoos.

How is this a screwup by the Obama administration?

If the measure that you are using is ability to carry it out, then you must agree that GWB was the most inept President of all time, since the worst terrorist attack on US Soil occurred on his watch. Correct?

This is certainly worrisome - as far as our security efforts go, I would imagine that Times Square is at the top of the list in terms of public gathering places. The only reason there aren't a lot of dead people is that Shahzad sucked at being a terrorist. Apparently, even an inept terrorist can lackadaisically drive a car full of explosives into the heart of NY without raising an eyebrow.

I do wonder though... had he actually purchased the RIGHT kind of fertilizer, it's possible he would have popped up on the appropriate databases and been apprehended?

So what? Is that supposed to compensate for your spotty memory or something?

Arch, thanks for a GREAT post.
You're very welcome.

I actually disagree to a point. I think you have people on both sides doing this at different times for this. I can point to many of the liberals and libertarians at a point a bit after 9/11 telling us how we need to understand why we make these people hate us, very much akin to what some republicans and libertarians were saying about the guy that flew into the IRS building recently as well. However, despite that, I think by and large everyone wrote both up as crazy assholes with no regard for others.

Im not entirely sure where we got on track of trying to discuss the reactions of Liberals, Libertarians and Republicans, but I believe that for the most part Americans react similarly wherever they are to a terrorist attack on America.

For a few reasons. One, there is an inherent notion of planning in the very notion of coming over into the country to perpetrate an attack. It’s this assumption of planning, and patience, that generally makes people look at foreign terrorists as more likely being somewhat more professional. Second is the assumption typically that terrorists that are foreign are most likely operating within some kind of network, even loosely, while often times the notion for domestic terrorists is more of a loner. While this plays into your suggestion of assumptions and biases in people, I think it’s a bias in part backed up somewhat with history.
What domestic terrorist was a loner? The unabomber wasn't. Timothy McVeigh, not really. People contribute the Fort Hood tragedy to Islamic Extremism and the American Imam who fled to Yemen. The history is stacked with networks and networks and networks and networks, and I think the term "Lonewolf" doesn't actually work, especially when talking about terrorism.

I agree with your statements on Al-Qaeda and Terorrism save for the goal. While I agree that completing the attack isn’t always required for the goal the preference is always to complete the attack because it significantly increases the affect of said goal.

I have to disagree with #4. I believe the magnitude of deaths in 9/11 significantly contributed to the impact it had on people.

Not the magnitude of deaths caused by 9/11, but the immediacy of deaths caused by 9/11. We probably wouldn't have noticed if people started dying 5 at a time every day post 9/11. We react because someone is responsible for these deaths.l
~5,000 people die annually from texting while driving and it is one hell of a ride to get any legislation past (or was a ride) to try to fix this problem.
Had ~5000 people died within 2 hours, instead of one year.. it would be a completely different story.

I think you made a great post and some really well reasoned arguments. I do think there is a definite stereotyping done in our minds and biases inherent from it on foreign and domestic terrorism. That can be seen in the OP even when the notion that this was sloppy immediately made him think domestic. That said, while I think some of it is likely overblown I think some of it is bred there for legitimate reasons.

Terrorism and studying, researching, and talking about it is my bread&butter. It is the only reason I got into politics. I started watching CNN in the 7th and 8th grade because of 9/11, because I didn't understand a damn thing.

I'm still working on that hypothesis btw, just sorta jumped at me.

um, navy....how exactly is the admin responsible for this?

by your reckoning, bush was responsible for 9-11.

...followed by nada until Obama was elected, and now they're lining up.

Yesterday failed, but it's coming. We're close to getting hit again....multiple times.

...and we could have saved lots of soldiers after that pesky Pearl Harbor thing, too.

Ummmmm...what?

Just wanting to check. Are you saying there were no other attempts at terrorism by Islamic Extremism during that time, no successfful ones, what exactly are you saying in that "nada"?

Very different scenarios.

He tried to win sympathies with the Ecofreaks and built a Green Bomb.
The cow **** didn't ignite.

Score one for the Greenies!

gibbs took FIVE SENTENCES yesterday to answer, yes, what happened in times square saturday nite was indeed an act of terror

dhs napolitano spent all day sunday EQUIVOCATING on the question, she repeatedly called it a "one off"

ag holder, who STILL wants to try ksm downtown, says he's got all hands on deck, everything's under control

this is the group that was so quick to consider mutallab, the jingle bells jihadist, an ISOLATED EXTREMIST

this is the mindset that judged, "the system worked" in the skies above detroit on christmas

now that this southpark assassin is caught it is STILL unclear whether he'll be MIRANIDIZED or HIG'd

this white house is on record a thousand times castigating its predecessor for their tough handling of terror in the earlier years of this century

under oblivious obama we've already seen one successful attack, hasan, the fort hood hitman

the administration appears eccentrically eager to continue the WHITEWASH of the pentagon's promotion of hasan which actively ENABLED the butchering of 13 american martyrs in the first place

under obtuse obama we've gotten incredibly lucky several times

the alert and courageous acts of individual citizens, airplane passengers, manhattan street vendors, are why and how we have averted disasters

the admin, at least after mutallab and fort hood, has been nothing but characteristically incompetent

if not expressive as well of some bizarre agenda

should a major event occur, given obama's inexplicably ostrich-like approach to islamo-terror, it will be the end of his presidency

Because the Obama Admin was clueless about this attack as they were about the Bomber over Detroit and the attack at Fort Hood..............

And so you admit then that 911 was Bush's fault and he was totally clueless about the attack (despite numerous warnings).....

Glad to see that you've come around and recognized it.

Oh yes, Bush was at fault for 911. That is why Samuel Berger stole and destroyed documents related to 911 from the National Archive. To protect Bush. (Pinocchio Icon).

It is why, post 911, Democrats diapers were full from fear of a backlash on their notorious weakness in matters of self defense.

Yes, yes, yes... we all know Clinton, like Obama was 100% focused on the enemy... Republicans.

You need to follow along better.

My post that you responded to was simply using Navy Pride's logic that since an attack or attempt occurred during an administrations term, it is their fault.
You can't have it both ways.

I don't think that 911 was entirely Bush's fault. I fault him much more for his actions post-911 more than fault him for "causing" it.

The bomb attempt already has it's own Wikipedia entry!

Heard news reports that he had a throw-away phone that they found and they used databases to find numbers that phone had called. Were those databases created or access to them obtained under the Patriot Act?
