Fat people huge security risk to the US

Rising rates of obesity among young Americans could undermine the future of the US military, two retired generals have warned.
More than a quarter of young Americans are now too fat to fight, they said.
Writing in the Washington Post, the ex-commanders said the fat crisis ruled out more potential military service recruits than any other medical factor.
They want Congress to introduce laws to give US children better nutrition in schools, with less sugar, salt and fat.

The Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found adult obesity rates rose in 23 of the 50 states, but fell in none.
 
Germans are no better, as are most of Europe either. Spanish child obesity is huge because of the population going away from more traditional foods over to the mass produced American fast food.
 
Growing up I was often labeled "skinny" and picked on about it altho my weight was in the range I should have been.

As an adult and someone who has maintained my correct weight, I can now silently laugh to myself when I see most Americans. Who's laughing now? :mrgreen:

There's not much anyone can do about it, though, it's the natural flow of a big percentage of the Western society.
It's just what we evolve into when we keep making our lives easier and easier.

Most people don't know anything about food, as far as which are healthy. They just continue eating what their parents fixed when they were young, and processed and fast foods.

It's not complicated. Eat a lot of vegetables, grains and fruit, and very little meat, dairy, chicken, and fish. Drink a lot of water. It's that simple.
 
Not to mention alot of people feel they must eat anytime and everytime they are hungry. Can you imagine if we treated all our natural cravings this way. I would make one lousy employee with all the nap and sex breaks I would have to take. ;)
 
I think we should have a government program or ten.

Remember:

1. They said they would improve the bill after passage.

2. They have to control costs. Fat people cost more.

Unless this monstrosity is repealed... get ready for all manner of fun and games.

The Germans play with their system like a cat with a mouse. They don't have a clue, but they keep messing with it, and now they have Dr.'s leaving in droves, pay that's less than a good mechanic, and the care is admittedly rationed.

You can eat whatever you wish but in moderation. Never gorge yourself at any one sitting, I always leave a little bit hungry..well most of the time. The American people eat large and over bloated portions this isn't necessary, being a little bit hungry is a great calorie burner.

Non the less tryreading, you are absolutely correct as well.

I'm sure if it becomes a major issue, they'll just add stuff to boot camp to reduce the weight of the overweight trainees.
Maybe a pre-bootcamp?

You're right, but the other side of that is if you eat the right foods, you can eat as much as you want and not gain weight, and stay healthy.
 
Let's also not forget the importance of regular exercise. I can perhaps get away with eating portions and amounts of meat that others can't due to being a serious athlete, but the key is to not take in more calories than you burn off. If you are sedentary, you have to be careful how much you eat ... when you burn off 1000-2000 calories a day just from your exercise program, you can take in more...
 
I think fat people would be good for the army, they can take more bullets. :)

I actually didn't find the physical regimin of boot camp to be all that difficult. Some of these kids today would need far more than ten weeks of basic to take off the amount of blubber they increasingly have...

it's not the physical training that kicks a boots ass, it's when he F's up and then the he or she gets thrashed along with the entire platoon is what wears a boot out.

Are you talking about a physical thrashing (beating) or one consisting of exercise. When I was in basic (Coast Guard), physical contact between CC and recruit (except incidental on the basketball court during rec time, for example) was strictly forbidden. We did have mates screw up, and with the exception of the times we had to hold our piece (an old M-1) for an hour, the physical aspect just wasn't a big deal to me.
 
Why do people believe in this idea that the one meal kids get at school is going to make all the difference to obesity.

This is they same crap Jamie oliver ( i would like to apologise on behalf of the UK for him preaching too Americans now) goes on about.

Then being in the military should be the perfect solution.
In boot camp one's diet is strictly controlled, exercise is heavily regimented and there's no such thing as a soda or candy bar.
For those with weight related disorders to which weight-loss is a common solution to their problem then that disorder shouldn't bar their admittance, it should bar them a passing if they go through boot camp, lose weight, and continue to have symptoms.

By joining in the teens or 20's as most soldiers do the military takes on the role of weight-loss guidance counselor and can intervene before health problems are absolutely likely.

while in the military ones diet and health are under strict scrutiny - you cannot become a fat lazy slob. . . and those that do actually face the possibilty of being restricted or booted out.

Mostly a physical thrashing, but physical contact from the D.I. did occur, along with other usual punishments, nothing life threatening though. Although I will say in my day 1978, this style of training was on it's way out. I do not hold any ill will, as a matter of fact I benefited over all in my USMC hitch and have no regrets.

I was in the Coast Guard and did basic in 1990. No physical contact was allowed (again, except for the incidental contact I mentioned earlier). They could still make you run and hold your piece -- things that many had difficulty with.

I would actually support running basic training like programs for clearly obese high school students -- not enforced, but strongly encouraged.
