It's about time that America take the schools back from the progressives, unite our children, and teach them to be proud of America.

Arizona Legislature Passes Bill Banning Ethnic Studies Programs

After making national headlines for a new law on illegal immigrants, the Arizona Legislature sent Gov. Jan Brewer a bill Thursday that would ban ethnic studies programs in the state that critics say currently advocate separatism and racial preferences.

After making national headlines for a new law on illegal immigrants, the Arizona Legislature passed a bill Thursday that would ban ethnic studies programs in the state that critics say currently advocate separatism and racial preferences.

The bill, which passed 32-26 in the state House, had been approved by the Senate a day earlier. It now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer for her signature.

The new bill would make it illegal for a school district to teach any courses that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment of a particular race or class of people, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or "advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals."

The bill stipulates that courses can continue to be taught for Native American pupils in compliance with federal law and does not prohibit English as a second language classes. It also does not prohibit the teaching of the Holocaust or other cases of genocide.

Schools that fail to abide by the law would have state funds withheld

State Superintendent for Public Instruction Tom Horne called passage in the state House a victory for the principle that education should unite, not divide students of differing backgrounds.

"Traditionally, the American public school system has brought together students from different backgrounds and taught them to be Americans and to treat each other as individuals, and not on the basis of their ethnic backgrounds," Horne said. "This is consistent with the fundamental American value that we are all individuals, not exemplars of whatever ethnic groups we were born into. Ethnic studies programs teach the opposite, and are designed to promote ethnic chauvinism."

Outstanding.

I'm sure the Reconquista folks will be pissed but thats the point.

Learning about other cultures is a bad thing?

I think it's essential to teach kids about overthrowing the government. It's their duty afterall should the government err too greatly against our rights and liberties.

And what's wrong about learning about other places and peoples?

Are you intentionally misreading the law?

You need to read the law again. That is not what it says.

Prohibits a school district or charter school from including in its program of instruction any courses or classes that:

Ø Promote the overthrow of the United States government.

Ø Promote resentment toward a race or class of people.

Ø Are designed primarily for pupils of a particular ethnic group.

Ø Advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.

OK, what is the bold part supposed to mean than?

These ethnic studies programs have long been a way to breed resentment by ethnic groups, typically towards White people. They do, indeed, breed separatism in my opinion. Some of these ethnic studies professors are true radicals, and their classes are indoctrination centers for subversive ideas, foisted on impressionable young people.

I think most of that is BS. It's the cog law. Make everyone feel as if they're just a piece of the cog. We should teach defiance of the government, protest and revolt, and the proper causes and necessities for it. It's an important tool of the people. Instead, this law seems like it wants to bring up children to go with whatever they are told to do without question or resolve for individual thought.

Man, Arizona is just exposing its ignorance and bigotry more and more lately.

It's backwards laws like this that contribute to people thinking all of the south is backwards. Arizona should vote those imbeciles out of office asap! November should be very interesting.

Whenever that is the case, I agree that it is a problem. Education should be about finding truth, not about imposing philosophies.

Banning programs that "promote the overthrow of the US government." My god, Arizona's legislature is made up of tinfoil hat wearers.

You can not teach any class that is designed for only Mexicans, only Black people, only White people, only Asian people, etc...

It's to stop the separating of people based on their race, and to start treating everyone as Americans and individuals. This is a concept that you would think would appeal to the left... that is, if they actually practiced what they preached.

Conservatives love this but banning teaching non-science subjects (creationism/ID) in a science class? HOW DARE THE LIBERALS TELL US WHAT TO TEACH OUR KIDS!?

And how do you determine that this class was designed for a particular group? Is there an admission requirement?

Actually, I don't have a problem with promoting individuality. This is just an odd way to do it.

What took you so long to try and change the subject?

You must be slipping. You need to re-read the communist manifesto and brush up on progressive evasion tactics

All you have to do is look at groups like the Rainbow Coalition and La Raza to understand the results that ethnic study courses have.

So, you think these groups are the results of ethnic study courses?

Would these people otherwise feel no strong loyalty to their ethnic groups?

No, they are basically ethnic study groups for adults. They, just like the courses in schools, say they are all about heritage and pride, but we all know they promote racial divide.

You don't need an ethnic study class to have pride for your families heritage. That is something learned from parents, and should stay that way. This is America, and public schools should teach everyone as Americans, not as Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, etc...

All these ethnic study classes have accomplished in the last 30 years or so, is to further divide people based on race. It's time for it to stop. We are all Americans, and that's the approach our schools should take when designing their curriculum.

How would banning these classes change this than if it is going to happen anyway? Did you mean to rhyme?

What do you base this belief on?

Thank god I don't live in Arizona.

That being said, the bill is their business, not mine. More power to 'em.

If they want to believe the liberal lie that the government will fix all of their problems, and that passing tons of laws is the answer, that's their choice.

Arizona is not in the "south".

Exactly. Its amazing so many liberals in here can't grasp the basic concept and predictably fall back on:

omg racist! omg bigoted!

Its far left liberal auto pilot for debating.
