This is utterly pathetic...

FOXNews.com - Boy Scouts Offer New Merit Pin -- for Video Gaming

A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous and kind — and completely addicted to Nintendo Wii.

The Boy Scouts of America — a group founded on the principles of building character and improving physical fitness — have introduced a brand new award for academic achievement in video gaming, a move that has child health experts atwitter.

Well at least they will excercise their fingers. And I suppose that the Girl Scouts will give one for TEXTING !!

There are better ways to exercise your fingers than playing video games. Just find the right girl and........

Next they'll have a jackoff contest, most orgasms in one day wins...

I suck at 90% of video games so I wouldn't have gotten this pin. Damn it.

And the devil is in the details, and this is a good example of why reading past the headline is good.

That means video game merit pins are competing for modern scouts' shortened attention spans alongside the more traditional academic activities that Cub Scouts embrace, such as art, astronomy, music and mathematics.

...

The games must "help you practice your math, spelling, or another skill that helps you in your schoolwork," according to the online guidelines.

...

Fairrer said the Scouts hope to prevent kids from becoming couch potatoes and developing juvenile diabetes by teaching them proper gaming habits at an early age.

...

In all, the Scouts have introduced 13 new merit pins this year for a wide range of topics: Disability Awareness, Family Travel, Good Manners, Hiking, Hockey, Horseback Riding, Kickball, Nutrition, Pet Care, Photography, Reading and Writing, Skateboarding, and Video Games.

So what you have is scouts, who never have focused solely on physical activities, trying to channel the interest kids already have in video games into constructive paths, giving them merit badges for playing games with an educational component. Further, this is in addition to several other merit badges that emphasize physical activities.

Nothing to see here except some retarded hysteria.

ohhh don't worry maybe you would have gotten others - don't give UP, keep trying - if at first you don't succeed - FILE A LAW SUIT !!!!

From the article, probably the part you chose to ignore because it doesn't fit your template for Scout bashing:

The games must "help you practice your math, spelling, or another skill that helps you in your schoolwork," according to the online guidelines.

I already use Nintendo Wii as a tool for my ADD son's math and reading, and it's made quite a positive impact on his skill.

You don't really know what you're talking about and the mods don't flush troll threads like these anyway, so go ahead and bash away I guess. You don't know what you're talking about and if past threads are any indication of future results you won't anytime soon, either :2wave:

So what happened to the "they're going to do it anyway" crowd?

I suspect that if this were a "safe sex" badge there would be much less hubub.

I am fine being terrible at video games. The time that most spend at getting good at video games I will have been either studying, reading, hanging out with friends, going to school events, or sports. I mean I am only good at sports games because they aren't hard to play and CoD2 because the shotgun has like a 40 yard range and you can't suck with it.

Actually Redress the guidelines for getting the medal is a lot more complex.

Complete these three requirements:

1. Explain why it is important to have a rating system for video games. Check your video games to be sure they are right for your age.
2. With an adult, create a schedule for you to do things that includes your chores, homework, and video gaming. Do your best to follow this schedule.
3. Learn to play a new video game that is approved by your parent, guardian, or teacher.

Academics Pin

Earn the Video Games belt loop and complete five of the following requirements:

1. With your parents, create a plan to buy a video game that is right for your age group.
2. Compare two game systems (for example, Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Wii, and so on). Explain some of the differences between the two. List good reasons to purchase or use a game system.
3. Play a video game with family members in a family tournament.
4. Teach an adult or a friend how to play a video game.
5. List at least five tips that would help someone who was learning how to play your favorite video game.
6. Play an appropriate video game with a friend for one hour.
7. Play a video game that will help you practice your math, spelling, or another skill that helps you in your schoolwork.
8. Choose a game you might like to purchase. Compare the price for this game at three different stores. Decide which store has the best deal. In your decision, be sure to consider things like the store return policy and manufacturer's warranty.
9. With an adult's supervision, install a gaming system.

Yeah, I saw that, but I doubted it would matter to those who want to get hysterical over this, or who don't bother to read source material.

I would be bored out of my skull trying to get that pin

WTF create a plan with your parents to buy a game right for your age. So it would be like hey mom can we go to Target and buy Madden please? Seriously...

We'd hook you up with some World of Warcraft and you'd have your pin after one night.

The level of violence is low and obviously fake.

Social skills are a must. Manners in Trade chat, how to ask for help from a max lvl 'toon, how to take harsh criticism from less than civil players and learn what you can from it while letting the rest roll off your shoulders, offering compensation for help/goods even if you don't have much...and my personal favorite, helping out in the n00b aria by giving away gold and "runs" for free.

You will learn real life knowledge about your computer as we show you how to apply addons and write macro code; how small adjustments to your computer's hardware enable enhanced game play, from graphics to team-speak to resolving lag issues.

Last but certainly not least, you will learn how to work as a part of a team as we work through various fights in the raid. There are strategies and you will need to do specific tasks ate appointed times, and those tasks and times can change without notice. It can be very fluid.

Your final qualification for your badge will be to help someone else improve their play.

Yeah, you would have your badge in one night if you are motivated.

Naw World of Warcaft is boring. Besides I think Barrens chat would pretty much disqualify everyone.

At this point I'd rather be tying knots than grinding.

If we were going to bring you to a raid, you'd be set up with an 80.

No worries about you selling oll the crap and deleting the toon, either, 'cuz GMs can fix all that ;)
