Moscow markets cruise missile launched from a freight container

Somewhere in the thread the focus was on carrier vulnerability. In any case, cruise missiles are a threat to ships whether they get launched from a freighter or from a destroyer.

True, cruise missiles are already a threat, however, it's much easier to find a destroyer than it is to find multiple cargo ships (or wherever the containers are located) secretly hiding missiles that can be fired from anywhere. So, again, it would be in our best interest to advance our anti-missile capabilities to counter threats coming from the increase of cruise missiles worldwide.

Works for me. I bet that airborne laser program could be adapted to shoot down cruise missiles from a boat fairly easily.

edit: And by easily I mean for several billion dollars :p

Probably should focus on advanced jet fighters, UAVs, and anti-missile missiles.

Assuming there was a carrier nearby, since aircraft carriers would not be the only targets of such an attack. And a multiple cruise missile attack is exactly what we should improve upon defeating.

Sorta. Depends on what kind of cruise missile and how close you get. The real problem is sea skimmers. And those have been a problem even when launched from significant ranges. Flying below radar and having the capacity to evade point defense is very much different then a vanilla cruise missile.

How so? How does a airborne laser program deal with missiles that often fly mere feet from the ocean?

We're better off designing reactive armor for ships.
