PHOENIX - Gov. Jan Brewer ignored criticism from President Barack Obama on Friday and signed into law a bill supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's busiest gateway for human and drug smuggling from Mexico.
With hundreds of protesters outside the state Capitol shouting that the bill would lead to civil rights abuses, Brewer said critics were "overreacting" and that she wouldn't tolerate racial profiling.
"We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," Brewer said after signing the law. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."

Earlier Friday, Obama called the Arizona bill "misguided" and instructed the Justice Department to examine it to see if it's legal. He also said the federal government must enact immigration reform at the national level — or leave the door open to "irresponsibility by others."
"That includes, for example, the recent efforts in Arizona, which threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe," Obama said.

Tell me you aren't surprised they resorted to violence

I would think that with this law signed illegals would be wary of doing something to draw attention to themselves. Because rioting would give the police a reason to ask for id/proof of citizenship when they are being arrested for rioting.

It was not much of a riot. More like a couple of scuffles. Cooler heads prevailed.
While it got very little camera time, I did see one Mexican flag being waved by protesters. This is one way to definately turn me off to any complaint they may have had. This is not Mexico.

Re: Mexicans Riot in Wake of Arizona Immigration Crackdown

Opponents of Arizona's new immigration enforcement law protest Sunday in Phoenix.

Phoenix, Arizona (CNN) -- Hundreds of people gathered outside Arizona's Capitol building on Sunday in a largely peaceful protest against the state's tough new immigration law.

Chanting "Yes we can," waving American flags and holding signs reading "We have rights" and "We are human," demonstrators kept up a festive spirit as they denounced the bill signed Friday by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The new law requires police to determine whether a person is in the United States legally. It also requires immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and requires police to question people if there is reason to suspect they're in the United States illegally.

Protesters worry that the law will foster racial profiling.

"What is 'reasonable suspicion?' " protester Jose Acosta asked Sunday. "Are we going to get pulled over just because of a broken taillight or because of the color of our skin? ... If so, is everybody going to be pulled over?"

Kearny Police Chief Joe Martinez called critics' concerns unfounded, saying the Arizona law enforcement community includes a large number of Hispanics.

"We've never had a policy of racial profiling," Martinez said Saturday night at a town hall meeting in Casa Grande. "In fact, quite the contrary, it's been outlawed."

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon appeared at the rally in support of the protest, calling the law unconstitutional and "just plain wrong."

"America is a country that is compassionate and that welcomes everyone," he said. "This is not what this country and this state was founded upon."

Gordon vowed to take the fight through the state's judicial system.

"We'll go to the state courts and we'll go to the federal courts and we'll go all the way to the Supreme Court," he told the cheering crowd. "I promise you."

Gordon told CNN on Saturday that he will bring up an item calling for legal action against the law at Tuesday's City Council session.

Others were also vowing this weekend to legally challenge the law.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, along with leaders from the National Action Network and the Hispanic Federation, announced Sunday that he will legally challenge the law.

The law "is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling," Sharpton said in a statement after the bill's signing Friday. "As one who helped to make racial profiling a national issue and who has in the last year visited Arizona several times to rally against these draconian immigration policies, I am calling for a coalition of civil rights organizations to work with those in Arizona to resist and overturn this state law."

The National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders, a group that represents 30,000 Latino churches worldwide, also said Saturday it plans to file a lawsuit against the bill.

"In addition to this law being illegal, if this law goes into effect, we expect it to have a dramatic affect on the state with U.S. citizens, legal residents and others moving out of the state out of fear of being singled out," William Sanchez, an immigration attorney representing the coalition, said in a statement.

Re: Mexicans Riot in Wake of Arizona Immigration Crackdown

So, they admit that there are many illegals, they don't want this brought up during police stops, and they will accuse any police stopping a person who 'appears' possibly Mexican to be targeting them because of their ethnicity.

In other words, they don't give a crap about the law of the land they claim, but care more about people who 'look like' themselves.

Not every one against the bill are "pro-illegals".

Re: Mexicans Riot in Wake of Arizona Immigration Crackdown

Who said the protests were illegals? Is it possible they were Mexican Americans protesting against the possibility of racial profiling that could come from this bill?

Not that I think the law is wrong, but I can see the potential of those Hispanics/Mexican-Americans who are here legally being harrassed. It happened to blacks in LA just because the local police assumed many young black males were involved in gangs. It could easily happen w/the Hispanics/Latinos/Mexican-Americans who are here legally.

You are correct I thought that I heard the strains of ""Hava Nagila" (Hebrew: הבה נגילה) a Hebrew folk song coming from that crowd !!

Re: Mexicans Riot in Wake of Arizona Immigration Crackdown

Ain't it funny to notice that most people who are legal and hard working, are at home watching Dancing with the Stars.

As an immigrant myself I have been worrying that this anti -illegal push would slip over into a “let’s hate all immigrants” attitude, movement and possible application. On the flip side I of course resent the fact that the government did nothing about the invasion of the illegals al of these years and now we are in crisis and millions of illegals will get amnesty and my parents did it legally, honestly, and openly. Yet as I said in the beginning many people have and will treat and hate me as they do the illegals.

LOL, don't watch that, but how true. Decent people are worrying about chilling out after a hard day at work.

Thats because they are racist. They are part of LaRaza (the race). They are attempting to take back Aztlan. The land that was purchased by the United States government on Feb 2, 1846 at the treaty of Guadalupe Hildogo at the end of the Mexican American War. The United States paid the mexican government $15 million for the land that is now known as California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, western Colorado, and western New Mexico. We didn't have to pay them a damn thing. They lost the war and now they want it back. The only way this is ever going to be resolved is if we end the cycle of illegal immigration and amnesty. We granted them amnesty during the Regan administration. What did that get us? More illegal immigrants turning our country into a third world nation. We must completely secure the border and arrest and deport all illegals no matter if they are Mexican, Irish, Filipino, or Arab. They are stealing american jobs at a time when jobs are hard to come by. They are using our services. Most of them do not pay taxes. They don't respect our laws, and some of our hospitals are going broke because they are using them for everything. My home state of Texas looks like a dump now because they throw there trash on the ground just like they did in the third world slum they came from. :soap
