Iceland volcano eruption could last months

The last time Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano blew, the eruption lasted more than a year, from December 1821 until January 1823, reports Sally Sennert, a geologist at the Smithsonian Institution.

"This seems similar to what's happening now," she says.

The volcano is erupting small, jagged pieces of rocks, minerals and volcanic glass the size of sand and silt into the atmosphere, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. This volcanic ash can even be as small as 1/25,000th of an inch across.

Volcanic ash is formed during explosive volcanic eruptions. Once in the air, the wind can blow these tiny ash particles tens to thousands of miles away from the volcano. Life-threatening and costly damages can occur to aircraft that fly through an eruption cloud, reports the geological survey.

"Silica in the ash gets into the engine and heats up and melts, which causes the engines to stop," says Sennert.

Based on reported damages from ash encounters, the hazard posed to aircraft can extend more than 3,000 miles from an erupting volcano. (Click here for a map of the ash zone over Europe).

Fortunately for the USA, Sennert says the wind direction is such that the ash cloud is traveling east-southeast, toward Europe and away from the USA.

However, as Science Fair noted previously, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano isn't necessarily the main problem. It's Katla, Iceland's noisier neighbor, that's the concern. If lava flowing from Eyjafjallajokull melts the glaciers that hold down the top of Katla, then Katla could blow its top, pumping gigantic amounts of ash into the atmosphere.

The potential eruption of Iceland's volcano Katla could send the world, including the USA, into an extended deep freeze.

"There's no telling how long the eruptions could last," says Sennert about the Eyjafjallajokull volcano."These explosions could go on for some time."

Couple that with the solar minimum we've had for the past what... year almost two? I'm sure every backyard ecologist nutbad is dusting off their paddle boats and thermometers to do some serious scientific study proving, yet again / once and for all it's "all our fault".

Um...yeah. Okay.

*putting back paddle boats and thermometers*

Youre talking crazy, man

I'm pretty sure nobody is blaming the volcano on human activity.

The French Revolution started with the Icelandic volcanos blowing their top.

Gotta admit though...

this one was pretty sweettt

No intelligent scientist is saying that this specific instance was caused by global warming. However they have monopolized on this prime opportunity to instill fear tactics and propagate their trash some more. Official: Icelandic volcano with unpronounceable name was caused by Man Made Global Warming – Telegraph Blogs

I love it when a blog cites an article that says the exact opposite of what the blogger claims it says.

They said there was no sign that the current eruption from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier that has paralysed flights over northern Europe was linked to global warming.

And why could anthropogenic global warming not be a viable explanation when looking at the volcanic activity?

Sure.. why not?

Winter warmer than last year…........global warming.

Winter colder than last year….......…global warming.

Spring comes around.....….….......... global warming.

Raining?......................................global warming.

Drought?.....................................global warming.

Snow?.........................................global warming.

No snow?....................................global warming.

Dog got hit by a car?......……..........global warming.

Dog didn't get hit by a car...…........global warming.

Cat had kittens............................global warming.

Taxes going up?…. Now that would be from global warming hysteria.

Did I not say no intelligent scientists are claiming this is due to global warming? I read the source and it is talking about hypocrisy and what scientists are saying. You can't judge an article solely by it's title.

The meteorology department is two blocks down.

I see your point. Because it is silly that global warming could be a viable explanation for volcanic activity, it is also a viable explanation for Feline procreation.

The French Revolution started with the Icelandic volcanos blowing their top.

And don't forget that, when the Icelandic volcanoes blew their tops, the French thought it was cannons going off, so they promptly surrendered.

Basic logic. If someone says something dumb about something, the people who say something smart are dumb too. Didn't you know that?

Yup that Iceland volcano will more than cancell global warming . Wonder if the wooly mamouth will return. ;)

And why could anthropogenic global warming not be a viable explanation when looking at the volcanic activity?

Because there is no connection between global warming and volcanic activity.

Therefore, there is no need to bring up global warming in a discussion about an erupting volcano.

Now, if you said it was god's punishment for homosexual activity, then... no, come to think of it, that's just about as crazy, on the same level in fact.

However, the speculation that a year of low solar activity + a continued volcanic eruption could cause another[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer"] year without a summer[/ame] might just not be so nutty. Such a thing could, in fact, actually happen.

Let's hope it doesn't, however.

This is scary! There doesn't seem to be anything that anybody can do! Should we all get some masks to be ready for a wind change? How are they breathing all this sand in Europe?

Either through their mouths or noses I would guess. ;)
