BBC News - Ukraine 'in uranium pledge' at US nuclear summit
Ukraine has agreed to eliminate its stockpile of weapons-grade nuclear material, the US says, as a nuclear security summit opens in Washington. According to W.H. spokesman that is enough "highly enriched uranium to build "several weapons".

This "landmark decision" what will be the cost to the U.S.?

removed with some technical and financial help from the United States.
Where will the stock piled fuel go ? If it goes to Russia is it that much safer there ?

Did the new Ukie president aka Benny Arnold Yanukovich cut a deal with his handlers in Moscov ? We all know that traitors cannot think for themselves!! Is there a new secret Swiss bank account with Arnney's name on it ?

This summit i think could see some positive outcomes, even the possibility of china approving sanctions against Iran and perhaps putting pressure on North Korea. While the second is it likely.

I think that China will want to be paid off real big to join in a a sanction stomp on Iran. I could be wrong but doesn't China get a bit of oil from Iran ?

Brilliant let's see, Ukraine has weapons grade uranium and is willing to part with it.

Jonathan Marcus, in Washington.

He says the announcement of Ukraine's decision may have been choreographed, but it is just the sort of news Mr Obama wants to hear as he launches the summit.

World leaders have been arriving in Washington ahead of the summit

US officials said Ukraine's highly-enriched uranium would be removed with some technical and financial help from the United States.

May have been staged? Give Me A Break, and what are we paying for this little show that will take two years. If they were serious and this were not all about the show it would be done in weeks not years.

This was like everything Obama is doing is about the show. He's a trust worth ad a rattle snake.

I believe that there was some staging about the announcement. This decision by Ukraine to get rid of the high energy nuclear material could not have been planned and staged just with Yanukovich who just took over as "president" from a real Ukrainian president. Therfore I feel that the get rid of the nukies by the Ukies is real. Yes they are looking for money, and I believe that I noted that already. Remember that in 1994 Ukraine had completed turning back to the Ruskies the nuke missle, cruise missle, Backfire B 0 mbers and other assorted nuke weapons at the urging of the US. Those weapons went to the Rukies - as if that should make us all warm and fuzy. The Ukes aksed for and got some nebulus "promise" of security from the US and the EU for turning over the nukes and b 0 mbers!!

My feeling is that the Ukes kept the nuke material as some sort of security or for future trade. The future is here since Ukraine like most countries is in sever economic straights.

I of course do not trust the pro Russian Yanukovich and so called Ukrainian who just learned to speak Ukrainian several years ago.

I do not think that POTUS Mr. Obama did anything underhanded. But I am a positive person after all.

Depends. If it gets tossed in with Soviet nuclear warheads bound for MOX conversion, it will be much, much, much safer. Going from weapons grade fuel to civilian nuclear fuel is far safer. The funny thing is that as Americans, we then pay for it as MOX is purchased by American nuclear plants as fuel.

At least he's actually doing something about it. Bush was a colossal failure on nuclear material proliferation. The arguable height of terrorist threat and he did literally nothing to secure nuclear fuel. That said, Clinton was pretty crappy at it too. Maybe we should put Ted Turner in charge, after all it was him who got the ball rolling on the transfer of the Belgrade fuel.

You know the word "may" implies more than one possibility, but nice to see to jump straight to the one you want to hear.

Do you think that Councilman realizes that perhaps Ukraine agreeing to give up its fuel is PART of the overall plan?

It is amusing watching the people who defended Bush on everything attack Obama on even the slightest speculation.

The one thing this world needs is an anti-hypocrisy pill.

Soviet Union was disolved in 1991 so it's Ruskieville who would get the glowing stuff. I do see that the fuel would be safer with the Ruskies in that they have many former ecientists and a real big organized "mafia" that would sell the stuff if they can get their hands on it.

Clearly the Ukraine having uranium is Obama's fault.

Or something.

It's the Brits fault back in 1918 to fail to support an independent Ukraine and eventually it was forced into the USSR. Franc e and the US was part of that failure also. The rest was history !!!!

Well, Russia as a whole is hard to guage was to the safety. Parts of Russia, particularly in the East have been shown to be guarding large amounts of WGU with little more then a few soldiers and a pad lock. It wouldn't be hard for Checheyan rebels to easily over run them and make off with enough material for a gun type. In that sense, Russia is extremely insecure. As for the mafia, it's questionable if they are willing to actually go to the highest bidder. Remember last week Moscow just got bombed. Selling material that may end up with those trying to kill you isn't a good idea.

Now, however, Russia has been converting warheads into MOX, which is nuclear fuel but at levels well below that of weapons grade. Many Americans get their power these days from former Russian warheads. A bit of irony there. Turning material into MOX is pretty much denial to terrorists.

Being that my ancestral heritage is from Ukraine and the history of Russia and it's predotorial attitude towards Ukraine I still have a tremendous distrust of the Moskaiylnyks!!

Perhaps, but I'd rather have the Russian Federation have the material rather then former Yugoslavian countries.

Frankly, anyone who is bashing Obama over summit related material is douchebag.
