Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), who had a central role in the health reform fight as the leader of anti-abortion Democrats, plans to announce Friday that he will not run for reelection, a Democratic official said. Without Stupak on the ballot, the seat becomes an immediate pickup opportunity for Republicans.
"Now with health care done, he’s retiring," a friend said. "He has thought about retiring for the last three cycles, but was always talked into staying: to elect John Kerry to help end the war, to elect a Democratic majority to get health care done."
President Barack Obama called Stupak on Wednesday and asked him not to retire. Stupak, 58, also resisted entreaties from Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.), the dean of the Wolverine State delegation.
Republicans immediately attributed Stupak's decision to step down as a direct consequence of his health care vote.
“After selling his soul to Nancy Pelosi, it appears that Bart Stupak finally found the courage to tell her no," said National Republican Congressional Committee communications director Ken Spain. "The political fallout over the Democrats’ government takeover of healthcare has put the political careers of many Democrats in jeopardy thanks in-part to Stupak’s decision to abandon his alleged pro-life principles."
This spineless idiot voted for this POS and is now running from the scene. There are few words and none that wouldn't break a rule to describe this SOB.

then it's agreed. he is dispised from both sides now

Couldn't have said it better myself. The man's an idiot and will probably be seen as such for his last actions in office. Stupak is best viewed by me as this politial cartoon illustrates. Congress is better off without him.

LOL

All the Dems are hard to find these days, eh? All basking on a beach somewhere, avoiding their districts like bubonic plague.

Vote-and-run should be forever be referred to as "pulling a Stupak."

Looks like the libs around here are doing the same. :lamo:

I realized I did an action that is going to ruin any chances I ever have for reelection so now I'm going to retire and act like this was long something I considered.

:roll;

Well, at least he saw the writing on the wall.

Good riddance to more trash.

Seeing as how he only is in hot water because of his abortion stance in the first place, I'm surprised that liberals aren't thrilled to see him go. Stupak is a hard place place. Conservatives don't like him for voting for the bill at the last second, while liberals don't like that his abortion views nearly sank it.

but he got his EXECUTIVE ORDER!

he was the BIG WINNER!

LOL!

the meaning of suckerpunch stupak's swan song is---no more bluedog dems, no room in the PARTY OF PELOSI/OBAMA for LIFE

a party of extremes

live with it, love it, it's yours

party on, progressives

you know what you're doing

What a **** ing lying piece of sh it.

In his speech he went over Obamas talking points about health care and all of it was lies.

He said TODAY kids will be covered.

TODAY you cannot lose your health care

TODAY pre-existing condition will be covered.

All lies. In 4 years maybe but not TODAY.

He went on to say he considered retiring a few terms back but he kept going to get health care passed so he had no intention ever of voting against it. It was the only reason, according to him, why he stayed a congressman.

After that he went on to say he is a former police officer and then it all made sense. Police officers are professional liars so he was at home saying whatever he needed to to get what he wanted.

Good riddence and I hope a Republican fills his seat.

but he got his EXECUTIVE ORDER!
yes, he did ... even tho it was redundant
he was the BIG WINNER!
nope. he overplayed his hand. that's why he is leaving his cush position. Obama was the BIG winner. first, he took abortion off the table for the next 6+ years by signing that executive order. the abortion issue is something his administration will not have to contend with
and even BIGGER, he got healthcare reform passed. republicans cannot rescind it. appears that makes republicans the losers and today's pseudo-onservatives the biggest losers

really, that's what you take from this? then you were asleep the past year while this matter was being poked and prodded and molded into the legislation we would up with
but, to the point that the blue dog's tail no longer wags the democrat's dog, we agree

live with it, love it, it's yours
please send us a postcard from the country to which you are moving ... since that is the only way you will be able to escape enjoying and living with the results, too
my turn: LOL!

party on, progressives
you're not worthy [said in wayne's world voice]

you know what you're doing
we did when we went to the ballot box about 17 months ago.

let me offer this up again, just for good measure
LOL!

It'll be interesting to see what cushy diplomatic or government post he gets after the first of the year. Or maybe big pharma will be pushed into hiring him as part of their sweetheart health care reform deal.

Wow, and I thought you guys use to love and admire him.

love and admiration have no place in politics

we attempted to use him

we knew that he might act rationally

instead he committed suicide for his leaders, he'll never again hold an elected political position

congrats on your bill, your progress and the iron discipline you exert over 80% of your mighty and expanding party

Wow, and I thought you guys use to love and admire him.

I didn't know who Stupak was until this health care thing.

LOL.......... After the next election, Republicans can defund it and stop it in it's tracks. After the 2012 election they can and will rescind that POS, and hopefully legislate real health reform, not just a blank check for more government interferance in our lives. You are living in some dream world if you think any bill can’t be rescinded, or killed by lack of funds.

Has anyone besides me noticed that the public is pissed?

It's not that he's spineless. He's a block head. He held up Health Care for a stupid reason and then shut up when he got a worthless Executive Order when all along his desires, to prohibit federal funding of abortions, was already law.

Good riddance to him! Hopefully, the Dem who replaces him will not be so rabbidly anti-choice.

We haven't seen anything yet. As soon as the public sees how much the "free" health insurance will cost them and the people already insured see how much their premiums increase, they will demand its repeal.

and THAT's the point

what is NEXT for this white house?

i mean, AFTER moby dick has finally been harpooned

of course, ahab-obama is INTENT on continuing his coast-to-coast campaign now to SELL americans on his moby, make everyone come to LOVE THE WHALE

but, beyond that, y'know, what's THIS white house to do, y'know, NOW?

the bank tax, the debt commission, the spending freeze (his top priorities in his state of the union already forgotten)?

the don't ask don't tell (another sotu centerpiece)?

the wall street reform stalled in dead dodd's banking?

when's the PIVOT to education gonna come?

what's it gonna look like?

when's he gonna decide?

why does he dither?

is it cuz he spends too much time in IOWA, the NEW HAMPSHIRE media market and talking to DORIS for 17:00 in CHARLOTTE?

LOL!

when's the OFFSHORE DRILLING gonna start?

before or after the meeting with the leaders of iran, sans preconditions?

before or after the prosecution of the cia?

before or after the closure of gitmo?

the point is---this leadership aint-a-gonna be wagged by no dogs nor no progro's...

she aint-a-gonna be wagged at all

you are looking at one STUCK party, folks---the paralysis of progressivism

he will never get his membership to follow him to within a hundred yards of the EDGE of another cliff, let alone over one

he got his moby and it's really gonna cost em

he'll get nothing else

initiative has potential of realization in this political climate ONLY that meets the APPROVAL (literally) of JOHN MCCAIN (spelled c-y-a)

THAT'S the lay of united states land AFTER health care

ask senators nelson, landrieu, conrad, byrd, brown...

live it, love it, it's yours

see you in november

in harrisburg, lansing, madison, springfield, sacto, des moines, nashville...

in a dozen senate seats across the country, including reid's, biden's, obama's and hillary's

heck, we'll talk in the upper peninsula

LOL!

The Repubs have NEVER had any interest in health care reform. Ever. And they obviously didn't this time either.

I see many people who are ecstatic about the Health Care law. We have seen at least one member of our forum whose son will be able to get health care under her family's plan because of this law.

To shout those right wing lies simply doesn't reflect Americans' true reaction to this.

And FYI, this will never be repealed or defunded. As word starts to spread about how this is helping people it will be the Republicans who will be looking at their own Waterloo. Watch and learn.
