Feds: Homes with Chinese drywall must be gutted

Quote(NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Thousands of U.S. homes tainted by Chinese drywall should be completely gutted, according to new guidelines released Friday by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.)

So who do you think should pay?

IMO it should be the Chinese and if as I suspect either that particular manufacturer has gone out of business, then reponsibility must be taken by Chinese Government.

Comments please.

Cessna is building the airframes for one of their new aircraft in China also. This will go well!

I know this would drive the price of things up, but we need to start holding Chinese manufacturers to higher standards. We imposed these standards on ourselves for good reason.

I will lay odds the Chinese won't pay, and we don't have much leveraging power considering how much we owe them.

the walls of American affluence appear to be inadequate when we take into consideration the compensations we made for inexpensive products.

I doubt it is anything close to an accident that this poisonous substance was added to the formula for Chinese dry wall .

I would be interested to see if any domestic Chinese drywall contained such high concentrations of this dangerous by component found in sewers, and is produced coke ovens, and other places such as in volcanic gases.

I have no idea what the affect of the gas might be of the PVC wire coating but when it comes in contact with any metal it is highly corrosive, the gas is also very flammable.

It is curios so many products that originate in China have dangerous components added. Like extremely high levels of lead.

The following is from this year and doesn't even cover the past few years when such toys as dolls were found to be dangerous.

As I said I don't think this is any accident at all.

Banning of Chinese toys- Kids’ Story

Banning of Chinese toys- Kids’ Story
Government of India has prohibited import of ‘Toys’ from China appearing under ITC Codes 9501, 9502, 9503 of Schedule – I of ITC(HS) Classifications of Export and Import Items. The prohibition has come with effect from 23 January 2009 and will remain in force for six months. Prohibition covers following toys from China:

9501 Wheeled toys designed to be ridden by children (for example, tricycles, scooters, pedal cars); dolls’ carriages

9502 Dolls representing only human beings

9503 Other toys; reduced-size (”scale”) models and similar recreational models, working or not; puzzles of all kinds

I suggest everyone think twice if you see a MADE IN CHINA label on any item to be bought for your children or yourself for that matter.

Those who stand for nothing fall for anything.

Yeah, it is always a real good idea to kill off people who owe you money.

A friend who is in real estate in Florida says this is a big problem, people have been getting sick in their new homes and the only cure is to take out all the drywall.....basically wreck the house. All because some jerk in China found a way to make a few cents extra by using poison instead of gypsum.

For many, the "cure" is to default on the loan of a house they cannot live in and cannot sell.

What we need is quality and safety control as part of the importing process here in the U.S. Unless China is willing to let us sue the crap out of their manufacturers, we should require all goods from China be U.S. certified for safety at cost to the manufacturer if they are sold here.

Certainly not the Chinese government

Let the buyer beware still stands

The homeowners should sue the builders for using poor quality drywall, the homebuilders should sue the supplier/importer and the importer should sue the Chinese manufacturer. As the manufacturer has likely gone out of business and short changed the Chinese workers their pay as well, the supplier is SOL

The Chinese government had nothing to do with the manufacture of the drywall (unless it was an SOE) and is no more responsible then the US government is for bad products built by Ford

Considering that the manufacturers were almost certainly at least partly state-owned, of course the Chinese should pay. Good luck getting them to pay. Taiwan's government has been trying to get them to pay for the tainted milk products, and despite Beiping's promises, the money has as yet to be remitted to Taiwan.

We need to make our own drywall, our own toys, our own cars, planes, bikes, and whatever. If it costs a few bucks more, so be it.

Catch a clue: We have Americans out of work, so we keep importing from China things that we could make here, and provide jobs for our own citizens. What's wrong with this picture? Meanwhile, closets are cluttered with cheap Chinese clothes, kids rooms are full of cheap Chinese toys, we have things up the wazoo, but our own citizens are out of work.

Very little drywall is even used in Chinese contruction. Cement is the primary construction material for buildings in this part of the world.

Nearly all enterprises in China are either partly state-owned, are openly subsidized by the state, or receive financing from state-owned banks.
