Obama to Unveil Offshore Oil Drilling Plans

Compared to our consumption, opening up ANWR would yield so little oil it's almost laughable. The capacity to change the status quo on oil production just doesn't exist anymore. Anything easy to find and easy to get to has long since been drilled.

Um, ANWR would require exploration before drilling too. So would most offshore areas - you have explore before you drill, you know. Most of these areas haven't been explored.

As already noted, ANWR's contribution to the total supply would be a joke anyway.

US annual consumption – 7 billion barrels (=19 million per day)

U.S. Product Supplied for Crude Oil and Petroleum Products

Notice that this means that if the U.S. were to be 100% independent of foreign oil, we would run out of current proved reserves in just three years.

The rest of your thread had nothing to do with oil independence or gas prices, which was my point in the first place.
