US deaths double in Afghanistan as troops pour in - World AP - MiamiHerald.com

The number of U.S. troops killed in Afghanistan has roughly doubled in the first three months of 2010 compared to the same period last year as Washington has added tens of thousands of additional soldiers to reverse the Taliban's momentum.

Those deaths have been accompanied by a dramatic spike in the number of wounded, with injuries more than tripling in the first two months of the year and trending in the same direction based on the latest available data for March.

In total, 57 U.S. troops were killed here during the first two months of 2010 compared with 28 in January and February of last year, an increase of more than 100 percent, according to Pentagon figures compiled by The Associated Press. At least 20 American service members have been killed so far in March, an average of about 0.8 per day, compared to 13, or 0.4 per day, a year ago.

Some observations:

1. This is OBAMA'S WAR.

2. US casualties in early 2010 are DOUBLE what they were in terrible 2009.

3. American martyrs in OBAMA'S WAR in Obama's Year, 2009, were DOUBLE their tragic toll in the last year of W-Stands-For-What's-His-Name, 2008.

iCasualties: Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom Casualties

4. That's a FOUR FOLD increase since the WAR became OBAMA's.

5. Obama's course in the Mountains on the Moon is characteristically incoherent.

6. After months of undignified dithering and disputing in public with his own field commanders and Defense Secretary, our perplexed president finally resolved upon a policy that is equal parts exit and ESCALATION.

7. After castigating Karzai as corrupt our clueless chief exec then called the crooked dictator to congratulate him on his coup.

8. But by far most troubling is the sobering realization that while oblivious Obama ESCALATES Afghanistan the enemy he seeks, Al Qaeda, is IN PAKISTAN.

9. The ultimate success or failure of obtuse Obama's strategy, therefore, is more dependent on the energy and efficacy of corrupt and incompetent Zardari, Bhutto's weak and wicked widower, than it is on the heroic efforts of the American soldier.

10. The only reason we're over there in the first place is because over-his-head Obama made this "right war" so central to his campaign.

11. And he only made so many promises he DOES NOT want to keep concerning the region because he needed to convince the electorate he was not your traditional anti-military, blame-America-first democrat.

12. Our heroes face horrors in Helmand, but the head honcho's heart isn't in it.

13. On the ground our grunts are required to operate under ridiculous ROE's, rules of engagement.

14. Taliban terrorists are free to shoot our guys and gals, then drop their rifles and smilingly wave bye bye.

Troops: Strict war rules slow Afghan offensive

15. We are not allowed to take any offensive action against anyone who is not AT THAT INSTANT aiming a weapon at one of us, even if everyone saw what the combatant was doing 30 seconds prior.

16. We are not allowed to move into a region without first warning the occupants we're coming.

17. No night raids, no rough questioning.

18. Before squeezing a trigger, you must first ask yourself, "What are my other options to resolve this without escalating the violence?"

19. LOL!

20. What, are we supposed to keep A JOURNAL?

21. ROE's written by a Montessori.

22. This is how we conduct OBAMA'S WAR.

23. No wonder WOUNDINGS have TRIPLED.

24. Afghanistan proved the Graveyard of Gorbachev.

25. Despite the commitment of 200,000 troops.

26. Despite TEN YEARS of war.

27. Despite a ruthlessness of WILL, Hitlerian in hate, exerted by the Russians in the mountains Victoria couldn't conquer either.

28. Contrast the USSR's with Obama's WILL to wage WAR.

29. Worry.

30. Our approach Over There is hopelessly half assed.

31. And yet, ironically, tragically, OBAMA'S WAR is the only plank of the president's foreign policy still in place.

32. Outside the theater, this administration has NO foreign policy.

33. Iran, Israel, Mexico, Korea, Palestinians, Venezuela, China---our Keystone Klutz is comprehensively clueless.

34. No answers.

35. Just look at our relations with Hu---on climate, on currency, on trade, on Taiwan, on Tibet, on SANCTIONS, on Kim...

36. On our reliance on the People's Republic to continue to prop up our spending.

37. We're going backwards, we're diminishing.

38. When's the president gonna change our image abroad---FOR THE BETTER?

39. Where're the RESULTS from the reachout?

40. US soldiers are sacrificing in South Central Asia for NO strategy, for squat.

41. Tragic.

42. Obama has NO foreign policy.

Yay. What are we supposed to say?

This was predictable.
You escalate a war, casualties increase.

"19. LOL!"

Look bro, I support the war in Afghanistan, I support our troops, I even support our President even though it is not the particular candidate that I voted for. But to turn this into a partisan thread about your dead brothers and sisters who are fighting in harms way is downright shameful. I understand you disagree with Obama supporters as do I, but I would NEVER use the deaths of our soldiers for a political point. I was disgusted with liberals when they did it and I will be disgusted with conservatives or anyone else for that matter who does it. I can sum it up in one word, pathetic. Have a good day, and I hope you learn from this.

on sunday, sept 20, 2009, president pie-in-the-face blitzed FIVE sunday talk shows, perhaps you remember

he said the same things from the same chair to FIVE different puppets he had pulled in to the same roosevelt room

For President, Five Programs, One Message | BlueRidgeNow.com

well, one of the things obama asserted FIVE times was---he was awaiting a "top to bottom review" from his handpicked commander in the field, gen mcchrystal, which waiting served as the presidential explanation for all the "dithering" everyone was talking about

furthermore, pieface proclaimed, when asked, that no one had yet requested reinforcements for the region

well, it turns out that the NEXT DAY watergate wonderboy bob woodward, working for wapo, published MCCHRYSTAL'S SECRET ASSESSMENT that, it turns out, president pieface had been SITTING ON since august 30

he LIED

about issues of BLOOD-RED substance

and bob woodward, of all people, EXPOSED the prevarication

McChrystal: More Forces or 'Mission Failure' - washingtonpost.com

it was very embarrassing, the president looked so stupid

obama has NO foreign policy beyond his ESCALATION of afghanistan, OBAMA'S WAR

he's in the WRONG place, al qaeda's mostly next door

he needs zardari more than karzai needs him

casualties are gonna get much higher in summer, just like last year

afghanistan is gonna kill this president

sorry

have a wonderful weekend

try to cheer up

don't let ME get YOU so upset

LOL!

This is probably the biggest consequence of increasing troops in Afghanistan. I have a few friends serving over there right now and every time I hear about our boys and girls dying I always have a bit in my stomach that it might be one of my friends. I cannot wait until our boys and girls come home and I wish them the best.

Me, too.
I wish for an end to casualties for both the Afghans and our troops.

Stopping the war wont end casualties. It is very sad to see soldiers dying, but we must finish the job in Afghanistan, don't let their sacrifices go in vain.

While I am saddened by every death on foreign soil by our troops they are fighting for our future and the future of what has up to now been nothing more than pseudo-country and lawless growing zone for Opium.

If Obama had any back bone or maybe a small desire to win this conflict he would tell Karzai how things were going to be done militarily and then leave the rules of engagement up to our Generals who know how to fight and hopefully win this war without interference from a bunch of idiots in Congress who don't know how to fight for anything more important than a dinner reservation.

Needed changes will never happen because after all Obama bows to Muslims and never forget, in Obama's Book Audacity of Hope he said: I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction.

So we know where his loyalty lies and it's not in the oath he took with fingers crossed.

Karzai needs to get the word that he is in charge of the Government bureaucracy and nothing more until the Taliban are all dead or locked up for ever. Then he can take charge of security.

We lose about 115 people on the highways and street of American every day to traffic accidents, and 45 to murders. These are surely unnecessary deaths that are at the end of the day meaningless except in the tragedy they bring to the families of those involved.

So lets try to keep things in perspective and focus on what is needed to win this war and then clear the Halls of Congress and the White House of anti-Americans, so the job can be done with a steady reliable hand on the wheel of State.

Bush didn't get it either so don't try that old blame it on Bush ploy. Just about everyone agreed we needed to go into Afghanistan and most knowledgeable people know it was done wrong and still is being done wrong.

So let's go from there and get it done right.

Our troops are dying while fighting for something they believe in and took an oath to uphold. They took their oath seriously unlike, Obama and most Liberals and even some gutless Republicans.

Those who Stand for nothing fall for anything.

our ridiculous, laughable, absurdly wrong minded ROE's put our heroes' lives at risk, nato and afghan military officials explicitly concede

NATO and Afghan military officials say killing militants is not the goal of a 3-day-old attack to take control of this Taliban stronghold in southern Afghanistan. More important is to win public support.

They acknowledge that the rules entail risk to its troops, but maintain that civilian casualties or destruction of property can alienate the population and lead to more insurgent recruits, more homemade bombs and a prolonged conflict.

"I understand the reason behind it, but it's so hard to fight a war like this," said Lance Cpl. Travis Anderson, 20, of Altoona, Iowa. "They're using our rules of engagement against us," he said, adding that his platoon had repeatedly seen men drop their guns into ditches and walk away to blend in with civilians.

If a man emerges from a Taliban hideout after shooting erupts, U.S. troops say they cannot fire at him if he is not seen carrying a weapon — or if they did not personally watch him drop one.

What this means, some contend, is that a militant can fire at them, then set aside his weapon and walk freely out of a compound, possibly toward a weapons cache in another location. It was unclear how often this has happened. In another example, Marines pinned down by a barrage of insurgent bullets say they can't count on quick air support because it takes time to positively identify shooters.

"This is difficult," Lance Cpl. Michael Andrejczuk, 20, of Knoxville, Tenn., said Monday. "We are trained like when we see something, we obliterate it. But here, we have to see them and when we do, they don't have guns."

Using the deaths of soldiers to support your partisan blindness...

Just when you think people can't sink any lower, they come out and dazzle you with their stupidity yet again.

we can't finish the war in afghanistan

because the enemy is in pakistan

pakistan has nukes

pakistan is dangerously not real stable

ms bhutto was assassinated in december, 07

pakistan is the problem, pakistan is the point

biden, longtime chair of senate foreign relations, always passed himself off as particular pakistan expert

he's been warning, warning, for decades

cuz pakistan has nukes

well, when obama started to run for president he proposed some really radical alterations to decades of what had always been considered responsible, adult us foreign policy

the most colorful, of course, was his crazy bid to meet with the leaders of iran

without preconditions

but another, and biden was all over him for this, was the moony pieface's pledge to GO UNILATERALLY INTO PAKISTAN if the opportunity to get bin laden were ever, y'know, presented

Biden also calls Obama 'Naive' - First Read - msnbc.com

since then we've learned that obama is conducting his very own secret war in his cambodia-equivalent

School bombing exposes Obama’s secret war inside Pakistan - Times Online

This warwas unfortunaely abbanded by President Obma's predisessor. Some of you will automatically accuse me of partisanship for that staement but I do not care. What I do care about is that there arepeople who have claimed in the past that they are akways rady, willing, and able to have our country defend us from terrorism, al Queda, and the hand meden of al Queda the Taliban but now that a Democratic President is ready and willing to pursue the Afghanistan War the ugly faceof partisanship emerges and it's now "Obama's War".

Well maybe, maybe it is Obama's war but it has to be because the administartion lead by a checken hawk VEEP abandoned a very major aspect of the real war against terror.

5. Obama's course in the Mountains on the Moon is characteristically incoherent.

Speaking of incoherent...

If you need to make idiotic partisan hackery points, please find some other vehicle for it than the lives of our soldiers. Your blathering is as bad as the spittle-riddled ramblings of a lot of lefties that I read during the Bush years. Honestly, you're at least as bad as the worst of them.

People who laugh about dead troops are bad people.

escalation, lies, secret wars, fighting the wrong enemy...

the worst of nixon and bush

sorry

Well at least we got an appology from you. Now let's get one from someone who matters like the Veep and POTUS from the administration who abandoned the war in Afghanistan!!!

Oh I feel the same way. It is just a different feeling when I hear a story about deaths around where friends are. Thankfully I talked to one of my better friends the other day and it was good just talking to him and seeing that he was OK.
