President Obama flew into Afghanistan's capital Sunday on an unannounced visit, his first trip as president to a country where tens of thousands of new U.S. troops are being deployed this year. …

We do forget at times of high political rhetoric and controversy here at home that President Obama is also conducting two wars he inherited from the previous administration.

He embraces the role. He campaigned on increasing activity in Afghanistan. It seems like he was well prepared to take on the role of being a war President.

I wonder if President Obama is preparing the ground for the next major push, the battle of Kandahar.

American forces have begun operations to push back Taliban insurgents in this most important southern province, the birthplace and spiritual home of the Taliban, and a full-scale offensive is expected in coming weeks. …

He doesn't have to fight the wars. Just bring all the troops home right now like the libs wanted during Bush's admin. Interesting how they don't want that anymore...

I still want it. More than ever.
But we have to live in reality. Living in Fantasyland helps no one.
The troops will come home when the job is done; when the Taliban is no longer terrorizing the populace.
At least, most of them will.

Why weren't you guys saying that BEFORE Obama was president???

Chappy, I think after a year in office, the "inherited" schtick is over.

So you agree with Bush.

So you agree with Bush.

My son is in the army.
I wish he didn't ever have to go over there.
But I see the necessity.
Other mothers are raising their children in utterly intolerable situations over there.
Believing we can help make things better and safer for them... makes it easier to accept this terrible risk.

AS a lib, I don't think that is what we were saying. I am pretty sure most of us agreed with and supported the war in Afghanistan. Iraq, not so much. Obama ran on a platform of emphasizing the war in Afghanistan, so he is doing just what he said he would do. Interesting how some have to misrepresent...

First off thank you to your son for serving our country.

I think it is a good thing that President Obama went over to Afghanistan. Obviously there are some things that need to be worked out with the Afghan government. But more importantly I am sure it is good for the troops to be able to see their Commander and Chief and for him to show his support for what they are doing for our country.

Have not forgot. As another posted, enough time has past, its his wars now.
Hope he finishes the job and brings the troops back home as promised.

Unfortunately everything this guy does smacks of... no... reeks of politics.

He had better keep that campaign promiss or even some of his most ardent supporters will begin to say bye bye birdie!!!

I vividly recall that only an infinetesimal micro bit of so called Libs wanted to bring the troops home from Afghanistan. Us reational thinking independents and most "Libs" said that we should not abbandon the war in Afghanistan and I even advocated for stealth incursions into Pakilstan. I also vividly recall that the Bush appologists told us that B II won the war in Afghanistan and all was well to focus on that needless war in Iraq!!!

Look, I was pissed that Bush made these trips for political purposes, and the episode of the plastic turkey sank home that point. However, I heard just about EVERYBODY on your side saying the same thing, but supporting Obama for doing it. IMHO, this is the height of political douchebaggery. Why can't you just call Obama's actions politically reprehensible, like you did when Bush went to Iraq? The letter after a president's name should not be the reason you either support him or bash him. Right is right, and wrong is wrong. I bashed a lot of my fellow Conservatives over this issue, and now it is time for me to bash you. You just can't bash Bush, and then give Obama a free pass over the same damn thing. It's wrong. Sorry if I sound a little pissed, but I hate hypocrites with a passion.

What is the issue being raised here? Is it he fact that POTUS BO has made a trip to the real war zone unannounced? Is it that he is POTUS hense CIC?

What is it that has people's shorts warped in there private places ?

I don't get it either.
He's the president; we're fighting a war over there.
Why shouldn't he go there?
Are people mad because he went, or because he went unannounced?

I feel that a pesident needs to go to a War zone at times if only to show moral suuport to our teoops. I realy hate it when apresident from either party goes over to a war zone only when:

an election is getting near

political heat is being applied to the POTUS'S BUTT

the POTUS was caught with a bimbo and needs to get the spotlightligt off himself

It's the Commander in Chief's prerogative to visit US troops whenever he chooses. Perhaps he'll call you next time to get your approval.

Personally, I'm glad he went. Regardless of how I feel about his politics, he's showing the troops enough respect to visit them when they're deployed in combat areas. That's good enough for me.

As commander in chief, it's his call to go, but it should never be for political purposes. This was for political purposes, as he had no reason to be there right now.

Why do you say that?
Politically, it seems his agenda would be better served by staying right here and continuing the try to sell the public on this health care thing.
It also seemed that if it was all a PR move, he wouldn't have gone unannounced.

The President is a politician, so any trip like this can always be interpreted to be for political purposes. As for "no reason to be there right now", says who?

I'd be more upset if a CinC was to have our troops wage war and not take the time and risk to go over there, even if for a little bit and under heavy security. It's symbolic that he believes enough in the effort to go over there himself. It does mean something, its not just an empty gesture. I give Obama a thumbs up for this move.

he's a politician first and foremost, everything he does is for political purposes, if he goes to a war zone, its to show to the voters he supports the troops, if he scratches his nose, its carefully rehearsed before and only done to show support to the nose scratchers association of america.
