Yucca Mountain No More

It appears the government has wasted upwards of $10 billion on the Yucca Mountain project for future storage of nuclear waste. The project is being scrapped.


"Fissures in Yucca Mountain could fill with water and submerge the radioactive waste if the climate shifts in the future, Dr. Chu told a Senate appropriations committee earlier this month. Salt domes, whose geology hasn't changed in millions of years, might make better storage, he said. Others point to the influence of Obama ally Sen. perhaps we should wait until we actually have an alternative solution before scrapping what works.

While Yucca Mountain may not have been the perfect solution what with spent fuel rods having a half life of thousands of years, we have small amounts of dirty bomb material scattered all over Country and most very poorly protected.

If France #2 in the world can recycle why can't we. We can't just let the stuff sit around until it's used against us.

We have a lot of wast coming from reactors and lots of other sources.

Recycling the spent fuel rods has been proven to be extremely well with other countries. The U.S. needs to quit being so scared of nuclear power.

The biggest problem is the NIMBY people that we have in the U.S. I for one would welcome a nuclear recycling or nuclear power plant near my home.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. We already know how to recycle the waste. Yucca was useless not because it wouldn't work, but rather because it wasn't necessary.

And the dam GOV gives me a hard time when my opfund is off by 20 or 30 dollars due to exchange rates when I get back from deployments. Kind of seems not right to me.

The difference is the government knows when it comes to Yucca Mountain that they stuck all that money in a hole in the ground; they're not so certain what happened to the 20 or 30 bucks in your opfund.

I promise that every single cent of my opfund was spent 100% legit. And there is for sure not a reciept book in my team gear and even if there was who could ever fake the signature of a buisness owner in a foriegn country. LOL
