It appears the government has wasted upwards of $10 billion on the Yucca Mountain project for future storage of nuclear waste. The project is being scrapped.

"Fissures in Yucca Mountain could fill with water and submerge the radioactive waste if the climate shifts in the future, Dr. Chu told a Senate appropriations committee earlier this month. Salt domes, whose geology hasn't changed in millions of years, might make better storage, he said. Others point to the influence of Obama ally Sen. Harry Reid (D) of Nevada, who opposes the Yucca site." (The Nuclear Waste Problem: Where To Put It? - ABC News)

Awesome... :doh

Maybe this will finally push us to recycle the waste instead of putting it in long-term storage.

perhaps we should wait until we actually have an alternative solution before scrapping what works.

While Yucca Mountain may not have been the perfect solution what with spent fuel rods having a half life of thousands of years, we have small amounts of dirty bomb material scattered all over Country and most very poorly protected.

If France #2 in the world can recycle why can't we. We can't just let the stuff sit around until it's used against us.

We have a lot of wast coming from reactors and lots of other sources.

A quick check shows this result;

Energy Statistics > Nuclear reactors operable (most recent) by country

Showing latest available data. Rank, Countries, Number of Reactors
# 1 United States: 104
# 2 France: 59
# 3 Japan: 53
# 4 Russia: 30
# 5 United Kingdom: 27
# 6 Germany: 19
# 7 Canada: 16
# 8 India: 14
# 9 Ukraine: 13
# 10 Sweden: 11
# 11 Spain:
This just a partial list.

Recycling the spent fuel rods has been proven to be extremely well with other countries. The U.S. needs to quit being so scared of nuclear power.

The biggest problem is the NIMBY people that we have in the U.S. I for one would welcome a nuclear recycling or nuclear power plant near my home.

… The project is being scrapped.

I'm not so sure the project is quite scrapped yet.

See my thread: http://www.debatepolitics.com/us-el...-ouster-yucca-mountains-biggest-opponent.html

And, Republicans aren't the only ones who are seeking to ouster Yucca Mountain's biggest detractor:

Excerpted from “Showdown in Searchlight: Tea party targets Reid” By MICHAEL R. BLOOD, The Associated Press, 10 hours ago
Sarah Palin and thousands of tea party activists plan to be in Sen. Harry Reid's hometown Saturday to call for the ouster of Democrats who supported the health care overhaul. …

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. We already know how to recycle the waste. Yucca was useless not because it wouldn't work, but rather because it wasn't necessary.

And the dam GOV gives me a hard time when my opfund is off by 20 or 30 dollars due to exchange rates when I get back from deployments. Kind of seems not right to me.

The difference is the government knows when it comes to Yucca Mountain that they stuck all that money in a hole in the ground; they're not so certain what happened to the 20 or 30 bucks in your opfund. :)

In all seriousness, thank you, for your service to our country.

I promise that every single cent of my opfund was spent 100% legit. And there is for sure not a reciept book in my team gear and even if there was who could ever fake the signature of a buisness owner in a foriegn country. LOL
