WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama briefed top lawmakers Wednesday on U.S. nuclear arms negotiations with Russia as administration officials reported that agreement on final language is close.

Obama spent an hour in the White House Situation Room with Democratic Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and Sen. Richard Lugar, the committee's ranking Republican. Both would play major roles in Senate ratification of the emerging treaty.

Czech officials announced Wednesday that Prague will host the signing of a new U.S.-Russian treaty to reduce long-range nuclear weapons. It was in that city where Obama committed the United States last April to seeking "a world without nuclear weapons."

I am SURE this is what Putin plans to do with Russia. I mean, his background is steeped in peace and love. He hates nuclear weapons with a passion.

And I'm sure China and other countries will immediately stop developing and building their nuclear arsenals.

Next up.......amnesty for illegals!!

The President so far hasn't done much to change anything at all but if it's one thing I can give him it's this. He does seem a little serious when it comes to global nuclear reduction. While I have my doubts that this thing will really work, It's definetely worth the try.

Im not concerned about major nuclear powers since the cold war is over in these times. My concern is that the Pandora's box is open and smaller, less stable countries are becoming or have become nuclear capable. The deterrent factor will be there as long as there are nukes available. Let's say I don't necessarily like the fact that nuclear weapons exist, but they are our reality.

True, But we still must have a global agreement and not just focus on the smaller countries or mideastern countries and worry about all nations (And yes, This also includes Israel). I think showing favortism in any sort of way will disrupt the peace process.

And on the last part of your post, I agree that nukes are something that we would be better off without, Just an unfortunate reality that they are probably here to stay since more countries are gaining access to them.

I am impressed that President Obama can make so much progress on so many diverse issues confronting our nation all at the same time. This agreement will be another major achievement of his administration.

Excerpted from “White House, Kremlin, Claim START II Treaty Imminent” Jake Tapper and Alexander Marquardt report, “Political Punch,” ABC News, March 24, 2010 2:21 PM
White House officials today said that a new nuclear arms control treaty with Russia is imminent, with President Obama and Russian President Dmitri A. Medvedev scheduled to speak and finalize the negotiations in the next few days. White House press secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed that the formal treaty would be signed in Prague in the Czech Republic, perhaps as soon as next month. …

If we could trust every party in this I would agree. I think if the major powers were completely transparent and all research in the weaponry were destroyed maybe there would be a chance. But then the other problem we have are routine violations of agreements between some smaller players over the years and trust problems, as well, we would have to make sure every single catalogued item is accounted for. I'm not saying it's a bad goal, I just can't see it being a perfect process.

Seriously only a hardcore partisan would find fault with nuclear arms reduction.

You know we spend a crapload of money maintaining those, and the expiration dates are coming up so we'll either need to decommission them anyway or spend some money replacing them.

Cease with the name calling. This is the 2nd thread I've read in the last 3 minutes where I've seen you trolling.

As a grandson of two Grandfathers who were sent to Siberia by Soviet/Commie/ Russian invaders I do not in any way believe that the Russians can be trusted anymore than the Soviets were. I have trouble even considering Russians to be human beings much less trust them, and I have the truth of history to base my prejudice on.

Oh come on Erod. Look at all the wonderful cooperation we got after Obama surrendered the missile defense systems in Poland?

Unbelievable how gullible liberals are on the world stage.

Great news. I don't see how a reduction to only 1500 nuclear weapons will materially affect our security, and it will save both sides some money.

.

The article in the OP appears to suggest that it got you plenty of cooperation:mrgreen:

So for what reason should we keep those 1500 extra weapons?

Unbelievable how attached conservatives are to the cold war.

1700 nukes on either side is still more than enough to destroy all life on this planet several times over. What do you have against sanity?

Unbelievable how attached conservatives are to the cold war.

Not to mention the ignorance many on here are displaying of the cold war itself, it was deals like this that led to its deescalation.
