Smoking should be banned in all cars as well as in public places where young people congregate, doctors are urging.

The Royal College of Physicians wants England's imminent review of anti-smoking laws to consider such measures to protect the young.

It says passive smoking results in 300,000 extra child visits to GPs in the UK every year for problems such as asthma and bacterial meningitis.

But driving and smoking lobby groups say cars are a "private space".

I can understand the sentiment where young children are concerned as they have no right to refuse to enter but this is a step too far. Not only is the idea of a ban in private space totally idiotic but hugely unenforcible - and I'm not a smoker..

Smae way they ban cellphone use.........;)
If Kalifornia can ban smoking in OUTDOOR parks, the politicans & judges will figure a way to ban smoking in vehicles if they deem fit......;)
Wake up, your rights are gone, BIG Brother will now tell you haw to live......:(

Welcome to the future, where our loving government nannies will set rules, fine you, and even imprison you, because, after all, they love you, and want you to be a part of their robotic ant farm, where everybody loves everybody. Don't complain. They are doing this for your own good. Don't worry about it. Just be happy, and take a pill. The blue one will do quite nicely.

Smoking in any location where children are a captive audience is child abuse, plain and simple.

And what about the hundreds of other harmful chemicals we expose our children to on a daily basis? Will the banning of carpet or perfume be next? Im not denying that second hand smoke is harmful but I do not feel it is simply the red headed step child of society. We will hammer smoking yet ignore most everything else.

Ever seen the doc, "Food Inc?"

It's amazing the crap we put into our bodies. Worse, you can face severe punishment for speaking out about it. But like smoking, sooner or later the gig will be up. But it might be too late for many.

Maybe then I wouldn't see cigarette butts at every stop light and stop sign. I am so sick and tired of smokers thinking that they can just throw their butts on the ground.

imagine being behind one of these assholes when on a motorcycle.

I agree with the littering part. I smoke, but I have an ash tray when in my car and a can of water when in my wifes car. Smokers should be more conscience about the litter involved.

As for the ban in cars, the last thing we need is more nanny state crap.

And the progressive mantra of "It's for the children" marches on.

Cell phones are different, because you can kill me by talking on them while driving.

Also this is some doctors in the UK, not any legislative proposal.

See that happen and the States will rebel. State taxes exceed national taxes on a pack of smokes. They love to hate us smokers but more importantly they love the fact that no one is going to fight them. Take away cigarettes and you take away state revenue.
You also take away hospitals that are owned by cigarrette companies.
Which is exactly what doctor owned hospitals would love as it reduces competition.

You're right. They should just throw them in YOUR car.

I can theoretically kill you with second hand smoke, as well.....;)
Cap & trade was proposed by a bunch of 'doctors' to end global warm...'er.... change..... uhh...whatever they are calling it now,........ how's that working out for ya?......
Trust me, the same principal is at work.......;)

The government should simply urge/support non-smoking in vehicles (etc etc), rather than trying to control everyone or turn everything into a vile offense.

People should ultimately be responsible for their own actions.

Cap and trade? I support making companies pay up front for the pollution they cause rather than us all paying indirectly for their mess. Also I think we need to provide an incentive to move away from burning a finite resource at our current unsustainable rate. So to answer the question, I think it's a good idea. So did the Republicans when they put forth emissions caps.

I think there should be a ban, on people sleeping with their hands under the covers. I think it is affecting their thinking process, what with all the jerking around.

I would never do that. It hurts like hell, and I can't walk for hours after I do it.
