Obama backs senators' immigration overhaul outline - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama, facing criticism from advocates of immigration reform, pledged Thursday "to do everything in my power" to get immigration legislation moving in Congress this year.

Obama said work on an immigration bill should move forward based on an outline released Thursday by Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

"A critical next step will be to translate their framework into a legislative proposal, and for Congress to act at the earliest possible opportunity," Obama said.

Obama met Thursday at the White House with Reps. Luis Gutierrez, D-Ill., and Solomon Ortiz, D-Texas, the sponsors of a House immigration bill. Gutierrez said later he agreed to vote for Obama's signature domestic bill, health care reform, only if an immigration bill advanced quickly and with a presidential imprimatur. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus also endorsed the health care bill.

"I'm committed to voting for this health care bill on that basis," Gutierrez said. "I want the president to be in lockstep with us, which I believe he was during the campaign."

Other parts of the Schumer-Graham outline include:

_Giving legal permanent residence to people who graduate with doctoral or master's degrees from U.S. universities.

_Adopting zero tolerance for illegal immigrants who commit crimes and expanding enforcement of immigration laws.

_Creating a flexible legal immigration system that brings in more low-skilled workers when jobs are available and fewer in a recession.

_Requiring all U.S. workers — citizens and legal immigrants — to get fraud-proof Social Security cards with a biometric identifier.

Wow, first the guy votes for the health care bill because he wants an amnesty bill, then we get Real ID 2 and low income workers having their jobs threatened.

How about they **** off.

I said it once and Ill say it before **** amnesty. Its a slap in the face to legal immigrants. Oh and this National ID business is more fascist than the Health Care bill.

The march towards communism continues......:(
Obama won't be happy until this country is on it's knees......:(

what? how do you see low income workers having their jobs threatened? other than the ss card, which i'm not so sure about, i don't have any problems with these proposals.

A lot of times the way they live violates housing laws, that the rest of us can't get away with.
The work for lesser wages and than many low income workers are willing to work for.

There are no jobs that Americans won't do, that's just bunk.

This is all about Amnesty and is a reward for breaking US Law.

Obama cares nothing about US law and he's proved it by giving convicted Black Panthers a pass, then there is the firing of an IG for investigating the Crooked Black Mayor of Sacramento, and there is more.

This another symptom of a sick Administration working for the destruction of America as we know it.

I have not read a copy of this proposal, so I ask does it have a special amnesty built in for the members of the Drug Cartels who roam kill and kidnap on both sides of the border.

Does it include the middle east illegals who have snuck in from Mexico so they can kill Americans.

Of course....I would expect GOP backers to oppose immigration reform....just like everything else that the party of No opposes.

People forget that the GOP is backed in large part by their corporate CEO buddies that want to keep a healthy number of undocumented workers in the system in order to keep wages low and profits high.

Would you expect anything different?

How would this change anything?

Would people, who don't want to be citizens but still want to work, be prevented from working?

seems to me that the proposal limits immigration in times of high unemployment.

The problem with any proposal that brings in foreign workers is wage deflation.

These people, generally, work for less wages even when they are legal and coupled with them, generally, skirting housing laws with(amount of people living in one home); they can live on less than the average low income family.

The city I work in has a lot of Hispanic immigrants, by and large they are good people but the city/county/state ignore their housing situation because they know that businesses like cheaper labor.
There are many place in my county where you can get a job but it doesn't provide a real market wage because of the immigrants that dominate the field.

What GOP backers would that be?

And try to get it right I am part of the if it has to do with the Socialist/Marxist Obama mine is the HELL NO PARTY.

I just have not registered it yet.

I'm betting it will be even more popular than the Tea Party because.

And yes I oppose illegal alien amnsety but I do it in my own words unlike this poster who has to go to the Obama. Pelosi, Reid , AstroTurf talking points site for phrases to use.

Those who stand for nothing fall for anything.

I believe in amnesty in exchange for back tax penalties, a sworn allegiance to the United states, and ability to pass English tests within 6-8 months. Or signing up for military duty. All people who refuse this, will face deportation or jail.

Something similar exists already its called the Dream Act.
