I wish I had the third party data, but it does not negate my first hand experiences. I believe you agreed with me that the attitude of a "white man's education" does in fact exist among some black communities.

I'd like to know what kinds of things could be done to combat this damaging attitude.

Conservatives have argued a variety of other causes: moral shortcomings, poor work ethic, even intellectual inferiority. Another important question is whether welfare causes poverty.

I'd like to know how many minority youths know who Ms. Parks is. They would probably respond she's a character in South Park!! It is tragic that we cannot laugh at each other. We are now a totalitarian society whereby you can be sued for life by making a crack about one's ehtnic background. Yet, in our media we see cracks made every day and we are paying to watch!! We laugh at fat folks, skinny folks, folks that are funny or ugly looking. The foundation of our society is supposed to be based on people that are different. It is what we are;different! Get over this s@#t!!!

As the statistics show, teenage mothers comprise a very small part of the welfare population.

And contrary to popular belief, teenage pregnancy has declined in the last several decades. Many are surprised to learn that the height of teenage pregnancy in the U.S. actually occurred in the 1950s - a decade known for its supposed conservative social values. Between 1960 and 1992, the number of births per 1,000 teenagers (aged 15-19) declined from 89 to 61. (2)

However, this was also an era when individual welfare benefits declined. Between 1970 and 1991, the purchasing power of benefits for the typical AFDC family fell 42 percent, primarily as a result of state and federal cuts. (3) Ironically, many conservatives will be surprised to learn that their correlation still stands, even if they thought it was in the other direction.

However, the period from 1946 to 1963 is known as the "Baby Boom," because all childbearing age groups - not just teenagers - were having children at unusually high rates. The teenage birth rate is not the only one that has declined in the decades since.

Furthermore, the socially conservative 50s featured much less sex education, and many sexually active teenagers were ignorant of birth control. The falling teenage birthrates in the last several decades could as well be correlated with better sex education as falling individual welfare payments.

And on that score, we should compare the U.S to Europe, which not only promotes early sex education to a far greater degree, but also has far greater welfare benefits for mothers with dependent children. And the success or failure of these two very different policies can be seen in the following statistics:

It makes no difference to the point I was making. In debate anecdotal evidence means nothing as anyone can say what ever they want. This is why it is delegated to the realm of opinion and not fact. You need corroborating sources to state anything as fact.

Your experience was wrong in some cases and you made bad generalizations because of it.

Real tangible evidence is the best in debate.

PS: Common sense and reality also play a part in this. I mean we all know the sky appears blue. So this is common knowledge and you would not need evidence to back up that statement.

I don't disagree. This is why I like to have conversations rather than debates. And thereby question and explore my opinions with others.



People taking responsibility for actions as parents. Nothing else will have much of an effect.

This is my feeling as well. Unfortunately, many factors (women's liberation, upscale housing and lifestyle, two income families, high divorce rate, single parent families) conspire to make it harder to have devoted time on behalf of parents, for the children's education.

Now in the black community add a high rate of single teenage mothers and deadbeat dads, throw in rampant drug use and wala! A recipe for disaster.
