"All Black People" Asked to Leave S. Jersey Wal-Mart

It's just the absurdity of the whole situation that makes it amusing. It's the fact that you KNOW they can't be serious that makes one realize that it's a ****ing joke. It's the ability to laugh at oneself that makes it amusing. It's the ability to laugh at absurdity. The ability to take a joke. The tendency to NOT be so ****ing serious and be offended at everything that makes it amusing.

In my scenario and armed with Jerry's info regarding the ease of use of the intercoms, I would have considered a retaliation. picking up the phone and saying something along the lines of "On behalf of all of the mouthy, slutty bitches here, come and make us." Or maybe, "Grouping up all of the sluts isn't going to increase your chances of getting laid."

Anywho... Every-****ing-person in this country KNOWS that 'blacks leave the store' could NOT have been an official message from Wal-Mart. We ALL KNOW this. Therefore, it was a prank. That would have been immediately evident anyone with a ****ing brain. Armed with that knowledge, it's quite easy to find humor in it.

Thanks for the clarification, but I know what humor is. It's just that the joke, as you wrote it, wasn't funny. So since most of a joke consists of delivery and timing, I'm wondering how you were hearing it in your head. Was it delivered (in your head) by a comedian I've heard of and can relate to? Was it written in an intended style?

It's what I'm ultimately curious about as to the initial PA announcement in Walmart, because as it was reported there was nothing funny about it at all. But to be fair, I could imagine how a talented comedian like David Cross or George Carlin might have pulled it off successfully.

Okay. Have you made your piece? You must be wound very tightly. You're going to give yourself a heart attack.

You think it wasn't funny. I get it. I and others thought it was funny. You're entitled to your opinion, and I am entitled to mine. You're not going to convince me that it was not funny.

Aps, you and I don't agree often, but on this we do. I have to admit that my first reaction to the Wal Mart story was that I laughed, knowing that it was a sort of twisted joke. At the same time I can't fault some here for getting a little serious about it - I would feel strange if in the store when this happened and I saw some little black kids with a shocked look on their faces. And there, there's Jallman's funny story and others on this thread - they show me that I don't have to feel guilty about getting a chuckle out of an ethnic or racial joke, especially when I feel that I tend to treat people fairly based on the person within and not the body. Hell, some of those jokes are funny!

Well, all I can say is it was a prank that obviously wasn't appreciated by some people, specifically blacks/African Americans like myself. As a man, I was surprised to read such racist foolishness, but as a Black man I'm offended; even moreso by the response by many here who honestly think something like this was funny.

What I'd like to know is how are those who took offense to this racist act the punch line? I mean, if the situation was reversed I think most white people would take offense as well. So, how is it that those who are now boycotting suddenly the people in the wrong here? Granted, as I understand the situation it wasn't Walmart's fault, but the incident happened in one of their stores so they have to take responsibility for it, right or wrong. Regardless, how are those who are boycotting that or any other Walmart store now in the wrong for showing their displeasure for standig up against a racist act?

Overkill? Maybe...but that still doesn't place the victims of racism in the wrong.

I have a pretty decent sense of humor. I Love white bread comics like Jeff Foxworthy and Brian Regan all the way to the Bill Hicks, Chris Rock, Kings of Comedy, top to bottom of the spectrum. I think a lot of them do a GREAT job using humor, even racism in their comedy to make good points on society at large. still...

Im trying to picture the joke...

Its a WalMart...everyone is shopping...and someone says...THIS will be a laugh riot...watch...

"All black shoppers leave immediately"...

Oh...I get it now...its a riot! Knee slapping funny! no...no...lost it...

Failed attempt at humor? OK. I'll buy it. But...I just dont see the 'funny'.

NOT getting all 'hysterical'...still going to shop there...wont advocate digging up Sam so we can burn him...

Just dont see the funny. Maybe its been too long a work week and I'm missing it.

No, I wouldn't have. Why the **** would I? But then again, I don't run around looking for **** to get offended over.

You, my dear are probably an exception. But you never truly know how you'd react to a situation like this unless you believed yourself to be the victim.

Thats the thing...I dont see people that dont think it funny getting all outraged. In fact the ones that are getting defensive are the ones that think it IS funny.

But what if they said all fat-assed white girls please leave the store?

But what if they said all fat-assed white girls please leave the store?

If they said, "All mothers with their children please leave the store," and I was there with my son, I wouldn't be offended. I would ask myself, "What the hell is this about?" and I would laugh.

Really? Because I was attacked by someone who thought it was NOT funny for thinking it was funny.

But what if they said all fat-assed white girls please leave the store?

I guess that would have been funny too.

My first reaction was, "WTF!? They can't be serious...this is some kind of sick joke, right?" Then I read the article and did NOT find any humor in it. Now, my son thought it was hilarious until I asked him how would he react if the announcer was serious and if so, how would he handle the situation then? His attitude changed once he began to realize the implications of this absord attempt at humor.

No, I'm not boycotting Walmart. I shop there everyday. (And for the record, the Walmart I frequent isn't "ghetto fabuolous" or "Redneck Nation" as illustrated in the pictures posted here.) I don't fault the store mgrs or ownership for this; just the person who acted stupidly.

I guess that would have been funny too.

Oh there is no guessing about it. That would have been a thousand times funnier. The massive exodus of fat white people would have been like a stampede. I actually fully support some one doing this.

I did not find it funny at all. If it was an employee he should be fired. It wasn't the store's fault, however, and a boycott is an over reaction and probably will make the situation worse. But funny? Not at all.

Speaking of a potential boycott... if a Jackson or Sharpton takes this on and boycotts Wal Mart over this... then that's funnier than the original joke!

Am I the only one here who understands that delivery is an important component of a joke? The idea of the joke isn't enough. It's why I could stand up in front of a crowd of people who've never heard a David Cross stand-up, repeat all his jokes, and I'd still be lucky to even hear someone cough uncomfortably.

I think we all have a decent sense of humor, some more than others. I just don't think this particular joke was funny. But I've laughed my ass off at blond jokes, the 3-manned racial joke, i.e., "a white man, black man and china man where...", religious jokes, etc. So, I'd say we all have a pretty good sense of humor and will or have laughted our asses off at our share of racial jokes her or there. But this one...I just didn't see the humor in it.

Really? Because I was attacked by someone who thought it was NOT funny for thinking it was funny.

Define attacked. I admit to not having read through every post. I dont think it was funny...cant fathom it. But dont think those that do are racist bastads...

No. There was nothing funny about what Jallman did and the very fact he couldn't be man enough to turn around and apologize to that family says a lot about him as a person.

I stated clearly, if you could actually ****ing read, that I had no idea the family was sitting back there and was told afterward that they were glaring at me. Jesus Christ, do you ever bother to pay attention to reality?

Wait...Jesus is posting here???

I think it was one of the most racist things anyone could do...singling out one group of people just for the fun of it. Stupid really. It's certainly one way to bring undue attention to Walmart. Just imagine how things could have turned out had a few black patron became angry upon hearing that announcement? Those who wanted their race war....you'd have been on good footing to have it had people let their emotions get the better of them!

Such a stupid thing to have done...not funny at all.

Curious...of all those who have posted who thinks this was funny, I'd like to know how many of you are white? How would you feel if the announcement was for all white people to leave the store? I wonder what your reaction would have been then? Would you still see it as a joke or would you then become offended?

funny.

Easily offended? No. Who ever pulled the "joke" was just reaffirming my status I guess, really funny stuff I tell you.

Here's where we differ on this: whereas you continue to look at yourself as being the object of the joke, my immediate response would have been to look at the "prankster" as being the butt of a bad joke. He made himself a bad joke by doing something so ridiculously offensive.

Some people apparently need a ****ing sense of humor.

No comment about your comment...but I LOVE your signature sign! :)

I doubt very much you and the rest of the gay marriage advocates would have been laughing if someone on the PA said "All the homosexuals please leave the store"

Still wouldn't give a ****. Keep plugging away, I'm sure you'll hit on a winning strategy sooner or later.

You, my dear are probably an exception. But you never truly know how you'd react to a situation like this unless you believed yourself to be the victim.

People keep on saying this as if those of us who didn't faint from the horror of such an incident are only acting so callously because it wasn't us being spoken about. I really don't think that's the case. If someone had gotten on the loudspeaker while I was shopping and said "RightinNYC you silly homo, take your 3 inch dick and get the **** out of my store," I would have stopped, stared, and then cracked up. It's a combination of the fact that:

1) The statement is plainly absurd,
2) The sentiment is clearly not shared by reasonable people, and
3) The idiot who made such a statement will almost certainly be caught and fired.

I certainly wouldn't go around saying things like this:

The incident could have ended much worse, she said. "It could have led to violence," Arter said. "It could have triggered someone who was having a bad day. I don't want to be an innocent bystander to something because of someone's not-so-funny joke."
