WASHINGTON – Rep. Charles Rangel, the most powerful tax-writing lawmaker in Congress and a 40-year veteran of Capitol Hill, acknowledged Thursday that an ethics panel has accused him of accepting corporate money for Caribbean trips in violation of House rules.

The panel exonerated five other members of the Congressional Black Caucus who also were on the 2007 and 2008 trips to Antigua and St. Martin but told them they will have to pay for the trips.

The findings are certain to raise questions of whether Rangel, a New York Democrat, can continue as Ways and Means Committee chairman in an election year. Democrats took over the House in 2006 on a campaign promise to "end a culture of corruption" in Congress that they blamed on 12 years of Republican rule.

I bolded what is important here. Democrats did capitalize on Republican corruption in 2006, and it was one of the reasons they took over. Are they now going to go with what seems to be the status quo for both parties in Washington, or will they decide NOT to act like hypocrites, and strip Rangel of his chairmanship.

I await their answer. A breath of fresh air would be nice, but with what I am expecting, I think I will need a few cases of Glade to cover up the stench. And I hope that New York voters remember this next time they go to the polls.

Article is here.

Rep. Rangel has served his constituents well. He's made mistakes and he has acknowledged he's made mistakes.

His detractors would have his offenses be fatal to his political career, but really that's a decision for his electorate and his peers.

Oh boy! ANother in a long list of Liberal Demo-Rat supporters who don't give a **** what he does, just because he is a Demo-Rat. Rangel is another lying tax cheat who should not even have been in Congress this long, if ever. No wonder Harlem is in the ****ter.

His detractors? Meaning whom? When Bush was in power, I heard nothing from the left but "Throw the bums out", when Republicans exhibited this kind of behavior. Where is the outrage now?

And, before you come back with something along the lines that I am just saying this because I am a Conservative, you should ask some of my Conservative colleagues in this forum about my criticisms of the Bush administration. Many will tell you that I bashed Bush even harder than some of the Liberals here did. You see, I have no axe to grind. Neither side owns me.

The way I see it, ethics and values are just that, and when someone loses his moral compass, he loses everything, and is no longer to be trusted.

Does not matter. Corruption in government has to be punished and punished severely. Just because you may have done a good job except for the corruption does not give you a pass. Corruption is not a partisan issue, it's a criminal issue.

You and I may be on opposite sides of the fence, but it appears that we DO have some common ground here. Well done!!

And if his electorate and his peers don't kick him out, they are wrong.

I was going to say this but Redress beat me to it. Corruption isn't something that one side does. It is a huge problem for both sides and whenever one of the corrupt SOBs is taken out of office it is a victory for us all.

Rangel is a crooked son of a bitch. He's been a disgrace his entire career. He ought to be frogmarched out Washington.

He's certainly living up to the legacy of his predecessor.

Proud tradition in the 18th CD - be a corrupt scumbag, but share enough of the wealth with your constituents and the local political machine in order to keep getting elected.

I can't wait til this sleazeball gets removed, whether by the ballot box or in handcuffs.

I don't give a damn who what anyone did in the past it does not give ahyone the right to be a crook or violte the law or the rules.

It's like you find your spouse is cheating on you and you say wll up to now they were very loyal and true so I'll over look the recent episode of cheating. Would you do that?

I think not, and in the case of politicians too many times people tend to feel like well it's one of our won so we'll give them as pass this time.

Well screw that the crooks and those who violate the rules need to pay a high price than the average cheater. They need to be held to a higher level and never given a pass.

Rangle needs to be drummed out of office and spend his remaining time on this earth paying the piper with more of a penalty than censure carrys.

And tha goes for every politician that is caught in violation of the law or the rules.

Equal justice must prevail at every turn or there is not justice.

Better yet, let New York City become a banana republic in itself. Break away from the good part of the state and LEAVE US ALONE!!

Probably be much harder for left-leaning politicians to win NY if NYC was it's own state...

Broheim, I came from the "good part" of the state and I can tell you that there's not much good about it. If NYC broke away from the rest of the state, upstate would find itself in even deeper fiscal straits than it already is.

As to the idea that upstate would become "Beet red" - where are you getting this? The Democrats hold 26 of the 29 Congressional seats, including the vast majority of those in upstate.

All the more reason to force NYC to secede from Upstate and merge with Joizy! Upstate can thrive without the NYC albatross, Hell, we have our own Liberal sh!tholes in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Ithaca.

What part of that made any sense? The fact that NYC subsidizes upstate is a reason why upstate would be better off without that money? Interesting.

And yea, save Ithaca, those places are all ****holes, but that has little to do with liberalism.

Ithaca still sucks. Nothing goes on there. But the major problem is that Liberals have been entrenched for decades in all of the areas I mentioned. Hell, Buffalo has had crappy mayors since 1993.

The committee, which exonerated five lawmakers who traveled with Rangel, did not level formal charges against him that might lead to a formal censure by his colleagues.
this is the very crap that causes the general public to wish a pox on both parties

and sorry charlie, your excuse that your staff created this situation and not you, is just not credible
had you been forthcoming and earlier made the disclosure of staff wrongdoing yourself, it may have been
The panel said it lacked "sufficient evidence" to show that Rangel "had actual knowledge" of memoranda written by his staff indicating they knew that corporations were defraying the cost of the trips.

"However, the report finds that Representative Rangel was responsible for the knowledge and actions of his staff in the performance of their official duties," it said.
another instance where the other politicians give the crook plausible deniability - and that is what he is now using in an effort to excuse himself from culpability in this matter
- blaming the criminal conduct on his staff
it does not pass the smell test

Yes, and by eliminating NYC from NY, that would certainly help NY in the "something goes on here" category.

Then we agree, right?
