Child escorted out of class by police for sitting during the pledge, mother outraged

Really now? And what need would there possibly be to force people to pledge allegiance to a country that's supposed to stand for freedom and choice? The need for hypocrisy?

And you recite it by choice. Big difference between someone being forced to mouth some words and someone choosing, of their own accord, to recite something that has actual meaning *to them*.

You can stand outside your home and recite the pledge day in and day out for all I care. When you start forcing others to do the same, that's when the line needs to be drawn.

There's a reason I cropped out all the "force" nonsense from your post when I responded: Everyone already agrees that no one should be forced to recite the pledge.

What you did is go further than that and claim that there is no reason to have a pledge at all.

Okay, I'll bite: What need is satisfied by reciting the pledge?

I fail to see why anyone concerned about freedom and choice would wish to indoctrinate children into patriotic ritual.

Reciting the pledge is a tool to facilitate socializing into American culture.

Exactly! If you want to say the pledge go ahead, but being forced to say the pledge is against what the US is supposed to be about.

OK class. Let's recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

"I led the pigeons to the flag, of the United States of America. And to the republic of Richard Stands. One nation, under God, invisible, with liver tea and justice for all".

Pretty good for first graders.

The average teacher is probably more reasonable, but any teacher who is this obsessive about some ritual should be fired because their purpose is to teach, not enforce ideology.

If someone chooses to associate feelings to the ritual, that is THEIR choice, but others should not be bound by it.

yeah yeah and all that Jazz

For cultists, perhaps.

There is no reason at all.

Some of us recite the pledge with feeling, and in that way reciting the pledge is one such action you speak of.

Some do, some don't. It shouldn't be mandatory, that's the point.

Dude, save your trolling attention-seeking **** for someone who gives a **** about what you have to say.

Saying the Pledge of Allegiance does nothing to help one assimilate into American culture.

I don't think any kid should be forced to say the pledge but they should at least stand and be quiet..........

I went to a private school and I can remember one of the first things they taught us was the pledge and why we said it....I don't understand why any true American would have a problem with it........

When I was coming up, they never told you why you had to say it, just say it. In kindergarten, they taught us the ABC's and how to write our names, and mostly games to play and songs to sing. In fact, I never did hear why it was required. It would have been nice to hear the Red Skelton sound byte of why it was forced down our throats, but I now get the sense, that the teachers didn't know why, either. "Just do it, because we said so."

I had the same experience. We were told why we had to say our morning prayers, but not the pledge. We just said it and went on with our day. Looking back at it now I don't think any student really understood why we had to say it.

Role modeling isn't forceful. It attracts and inspires younger people to make active choices which mimic the source of their inspiration. If a teacher is telling someone to recite the pledge or face consequences, that is blatantly authoritarianism and militarism in the education system.

Role modeling would be explaining why you love reciting the pledge, and letting children decide for themselves if they agree with your views or not.

Or even better, giving them a history lesson before holding an optional recitation of such.

Good for you.

Some PEOPLE don't like it. I know I didn't, it was silly. Like saying "under leprechauns". Doesn't make sense.

I think that is part of the problem......some people want all the benefits this country provides but they could care less about the country itself.......I can understand a child but adults should know better.......

What does 'under god' have to do with the country?

Re: Child escorted out of class by police for sitting during the pledge, mother outra

What does 'under god' have to do with the country?
The Declaration of Independence.

Re: Child escorted out of class by police for sitting during the pledge, mother outra

Anyone who is old enough to decide which country they want to pledge their allegiance to, is old enough to vote.

Re: Child escorted out of class by police for sitting during the pledge, mother outra

The Declaration of Independence.

That's really not an answer. I didn't ask where else in the world the words are used. I asked what 'under god' has to do with our country. It might as well say 'under santa' or 'under fairies'. What does it have to do with any goddamn thing in our country?
