Tibet's exiled spiritual leader told The Associated Press during a brief interview in his hotel suite in Beverly Hills that he had not heard of Woods, but when the circumstances were explained to him he said that when it comes to adultery, "all religions have the same idea."

"Whether you call it Buddhism or another religion, self-discipline, that's important," he said. "Self-discipline with awareness of consequences."

Why are you surprised? His Holiness doesn't live in a cave and Tiger Woods is extremely well known.

I've actually had the pleasure of meeting His Holiness at a speaking event. I was very impressed.

Pertaining to the topic, I am not surprised that the Dalai Lama has no idea who Tiger Woods is or what he has accomplished. The Dalai Lama has a lot on his plate, and keeping up with American sports stars is certainly not a priority.

I too got to hear him speak (didn't get to meet him), but I still get chills to this day thinking about listening to him speak. What a remarkable, remarkable man.

And yeah, freeing a nation is probably a little higher priority than knowing golf stars.

My sentiments exactly. I highly recommend everyone see him at least once. The reason I was able to meet him was because I was attending a local Buddhist temple and we were granted access to see him after he spoke.
 
Dalai Lama I'm sure is a wonderful man with all the best intentions in the world when it comes to peace on earth goodwill toward men etc.

It's time to start calling him the former Spiritual leader he's been out of Tibet longer than most people on this site have been alive and is out of contact with those he was forced to leave behind.

I respect his views and believe that if the world embraced his philosophies we'd all be better off. However there is no way he can be an expert on in any position to give other than general advise to Tiger Woods who made his bad now he must sleep in it either alone or only with hos wife.

It's not like the Dalai Lama sought out Tiger Woods. HH didn't even know who Tiger Woods is.

HH's point is that most religions have precepts against adultery. Buddhism is no exception.

Any human being can give advice, which can be accepted or rejected. HH The Dalai Lama IS a wonderful man and well worth reading or hearing BUT he is not a "spiritual leader" in the Judaeo-Christian sense of the word. He is the political leader of the Tibetans in exile and a well-respected teacher of Diamond Way Buddhism that most Buddhists worldwide would pay attention to. He's not a pope, however, and his teachings have no stamp of divine infallibility.

There are no commandments in Buddhism, as I'm sure you are aware, WindOC. Buddhists are encouraged to train themselves in "Right action" which includes refraining from killing, stealing and sexual misconduct. The definition of what is construed as sexual misconduct is dictated by the individual's own karma. HH the DL has occasionally interpreted what this means to him, but his opinion, albeit one to be respected, is just that, his opinion. Other Buddhist teachers have often disagreed with his interpretation.

There are vows that Buddhists take to follow precepts of conduct. Not to committ sexual misconduct--especially adultery is one of the precepts.

It varies by lineage and school of Buddhism. In the lineage that I follow I was married to my partner of 23 years by a Buddhist lama, in the monastery with the whole community present in the window where it was legal in California. I am still legally married. I enjoy the support of my community for my relationship.

The whole idea of Buddhism is first 'do no harm'. Do not break up someone elses relationship.

Most people would identify the commission of adultery as a "sexual misconduct" but it isn't specified in the precepts of the Zen orders that I have been involved with. Perhaps it is by other orders and in other Buddhist traditions.
