'Snowmageddon' blankets Mid-Atlantic in heavy snow

That sucks,you have my sympathy.
Thanks.

It wasn't really too bad from my perspective, except the driving home at 1130PM on Friday, during the snowstorm. Thankfully, I was carpooling, and it was the other guy's turn to drive.

They are saying 32 inches at nearby Dulles Airport

That would make this the biggest storm in recorded history.

Is it usual to be getting this much snow in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean?

It looks like they called this one right!

" Sept. 28, 2009 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. Northeast may have the coldest winter in a decade because of a weak El Nino, a warming current in the Pacific Ocean, according to Matt Rogers, a forecaster at Commodity Weather Group.

“Weak El Ninos are notorious for cold and snowy weather on the Eastern seaboard,” Rogers said in a Bloomberg Television interview from Washington. “About 70 percent to 75 percent of the time a weak El Nino will deliver the goods in terms of above-normal heating demand and cold weather. It’s pretty good odds.”

Warming in the Pacific often means fewer Atlantic hurricanes and higher temperatures in the U.S. Northeast during January, February and March, according to the National Weather Service. El Nino occurs every two to five years, on average, and lasts about 12 months, according to the service.

Hedge-fund managers and other large speculators increased their net-long positions, or bets prices will rise, in New York heating oil futures in the week ended Sep. 22, according to U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission data Sept. 25.

“It could be one of the coldest winters, or the coldest, winter of the decade,” Rogers said."

It looks like we're going to get another 4-8 inches of snow on Tuesday night / Wednesday morning. What the ****, DC? One of the reasons I left Ohio was to AVOID this kind of weather.

We get quoted 6" - 12" out here in Virginia. I love it!

Dan I didn't know you where from Michigan. I was born and raised there and moved to Texas in 85.

So where in Michigan are you guys from. I attended a year of High School in Mt. Clemons,Michigan and graduated from Alpena college in '78'

Edit: I see later in the thread where you are from. I was in Alpena during the blizzard of 77 -78. We got about three feet up there I think.

Now they're saying 10-20 more inches here. This is on top of the 2-3 feet or so that we already have.

Worst is I am snowed in, and I ran out of smokes!!!!!!!

I thought I had plenty! But I was wrong...oh so wrong need nicotine (voice trails off)

You have my sympathies. Any neighbors smoke?

I don't know why people are bellie aching over this storm. Sure it's a lot of snow, but we in the NE endure that every winter (except this one dammit!). The roads will be plowed soon enough. It's just snow for Heaven's sake.

We are not nearly as prepared for this kind of thing as you guys are. Having already gotten school off last Friday and Wednesday (and, unrelatedly, Monday), it looks like we're going to get this entire week off.

One measly foot of snow is a big deal here, and we got way more than that.

I realize it's big to you guys, but it's not the biggest snow storm in recorded history. And damn it, it should have been OUR storm!! I can see lawn out front. :doh

Ya, they upgraded it to 12 inches for DC. 2 inches during the day tomorrow, then 10 more tomorrow night. Ughh.

I realize it's big to you guys, but it's not the biggest snow storm in recorded history.

The biggest recorded snowfall in DC was 28 inches, set back in 1922. We got 25 inches this weekend. And I heard that it actually did set a new record at Dulles Airport.

Dav hadn't indicated location until after I commented.

Yep, doesn't shock me at all. I'm a couple exits up rt 28 from Dulles Airport, in Sterling, and we got 30" measured in my back yard.

Granted, its melted down to about 24" now. However with the snow coming who knows what its going to get to. People freaked out over 20" in December, and 30" now, I can't wait to see if we actually get closer to the 20" instead of the 10" in the next few days what people are going to do.

It started out with just a "winter storm watch" set for 2 PM Tues through 7:00 PM Wed for 5 or more inches.

It quickly got bumped up to "Winter Storm Warning" set from 12 PM Tues to 7:00 PM Wed and 10-20".

The government has been off for 3 days so far this year (one day in December, and now Monday and Tuesday for now). If we get at least a foot down tomorrow I don't see any way how we're not going to have Wednesday off. And with it going till late evening Wednesday and adding to this weekends, I'd say there's a slight chance for Thursday off.

Which is frankly crazy, but its just that they're not prepped for this up here. Once in a winter was bad enough. Twice, and then having a little extra on top of the second one, is just way too much.

The biggest issue is how many people use the Metro's and Metro Buses to get around, especially for government workers, and with so much snow (and it was SO much that the bottom layers have turned to ice now) the above ground metro's can't really run very well and the Buses are having trouble.

Its been crazy. Fun though. Love watching it.

As the song goes, "Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow".

We are getting a foot of snow tomorrow, so just let me say one little thing to you...DIE!

I think if we get a foot of snow tomorrow, the whole area will almost definitely be shut down on Thursday, and probably Friday as well. Everything is already closed for tomorrow even though we haven't had any snow since Saturday.

I started to dig out my car (27" here) and two 12 year olds came by and offered to do it for $20. Hell yeah! :)

Heck, I made 70-80 bucks back in the 80s as a kid each snowstorm -- with with five-six good snowstorms a year, that was pretty good money for a 12 year old kid.

For those hoping for change in DC areas, the climate provided it! Betcha all you Obama voters still cannot believe..if you live in DC metro areas....that the biggest change to your life more than a year after the Messiah's inaug would be the climate....getting even colder and dumping 3 feet of snow on your global warming theories.

Think we need to send the President back to Copenhagen?:doh

If you want to troll about climate, then start a thread about climate. This is a thread about the weather, which is not the same thing. Please leave this thread, and take your pot-stirring attitude elsewhere.

The entire thread is about a snowstorm of good size in the Mid-atlantic region of the US only. That's a discussion on weather, climate is a broader issue. I'll not leave, rather, continue the dialogue.

And it's hillarious that weeks after Copenhagen and weeks after news comes to the front that this man made global warming message isn't true, Mother Nature seemingly reminds us of that exact fact by blanketing the White House with 3 feet of snow, blizzard like conditions, government shut down, and Obama and the rest of the climaters with egg on their faces.

I think this most relevant and my attitude needs no change.

Next.
