Many children taken by Americans not orphans

It is even more shaddy than that.

Today on the BBC and CNN International it was revealed that the missionaries tried to get real orphans from an orphanage first, but were denied by the leaders of the orphanage because as he said "they were too shady" and had no documentation at all. He out right said he suspected a child trafficking attempt. And a few days later the missionaries were busted at the boarder with 33 kids.

On top of that they both reported that the missionaries had asked permission of the Dominican Republic to take the kids there beforehand, but were denied. So they even attempted some what to do at least part of the case the legal way and were denied but tried anyways....................

And as I write this BBC World is reporting they are being charged with child abduction and child trafficking.
 
I wonder why these Christians thought they could break the law and get away with it?

..and in Haiti of all places :shock:
 
I think they either need to let these people go right now or the US needs to pull out every one over there trying to help these ungrateful bastards.

Have some loyalty to your fellow-Americans. As if the Haitians are so squeaky clean. Like I said if they would have given them a few extra bucks we probably wouldn't have even seen this story.

that's just silly. why would i have loyalty to people who might be criminals? their story seems a little suspicious to me.

It doesn't seem like kidnapping to me, since the parents were giving their children away voluntarily. It does seem shady though.

There's an easy equivalency here. If the same church group showed up in New Orleans after Katrina, how would they be judged for trying to pull the same crap? I think the answer is clear - in that case, as many people think in the Haiti situation, rendering aid in the form of "adoption" was an extreme response and skipped past many less complicated and more direct forms of aid.

If anyone had found an "orphaned" kid after Katrina, the notion that the proper response should have been to smuggle them out of the state without proper paperwork so they could be offered up for adoption privately would have been laughed out of the courtroom. Everyone would have recognized it as a kidnapping/trafficing attempt, or at the least, a series of broken laws.

And it appears several journalists are beginning to take a second look at this group's leader, one Laura Silsby. It's beginning to look like the "rescue" group, as well as the Haitians and Dominicans were being duped by this woman:

"Laura Silsby is incredibly good at getting enormous sums of money from people. 10 years good at it. She has probably smooth talked these poor people and now they're stuck in jail with her." The New York Times this afternoon quotes Edwin Coq, the Baptist's lawyer, stating that 9 of his 10 clients were “completely innocent,” but that, in an apparent reference to Ms. Silsby, “if the judiciary were to keep one, it could be the leader of the group.”

When the story first broke last week, Silsby, 40, of Boise, Idaho, claimed she didn't realize collecting and transporting 33 Haitian children (turns out some weren't even orphans) across the border into the Dominican Republic would cause a ruckus, that she didn't realize she needed permission from the Haitian government.

A sensible person cannot claim ignorance in this situation. Especially one like Silsby with enough business savvy to have been named the 2006 International Businesswoman of the Year.

Silsby has been the subject of eight civil lawsuits and 14 unpaid wage claims. The $358,000 Meridian house at which she founded her nonprofit New Life Children's Refuge in November was foreclosed upon in December. All in all, it seems likely that Silsby saw an opportunity to make some fairly quick money - it's reported elsewhere that people were willing to pay upwards of $30,000 per child to adopt a Haitian "orphan". And with 33 kids in tow when they were caught trying to cross the border, that would have garnered her about $1 million gross, in 60 to 90 days, with the promise of even more to come.

Release the missionaries, if you must. They were most likely unwitting accomplices of this woman. But Silsby appears to be nothing more than a con-artist and crook. She needs to take the brunt of whatever legal action that Haiti decides is appropriate.
 
Kidnapping is a very serious offense in the USA. Why would we think other nations would not view it as such?

That was after all the mantra being promoted by the backers of these criminal on day on these boards when when I and a few others called them for what they were .. child traffickers at worst, brain dead at best, but never the less they broke the law.

I believe they are being over zealous,they should wait until everything settles down and see if these childrens parents are alive first before wanting to rush them off to some orphanage and get the permission of the government. Better yet they should open a orphanage down in Haiti(just nothing over two stories high) and appeal churches in the US to donate food and other things to help the kids out.

.Whether or not there are ulterior motives time will have to tell.IF these people are not who they say they are and turn out to be sex traffickers,slavers or something else just as worse then they should be executed
 
I have a hunch that Laura Silsby is a traveler. An Irish grifter that infiltrated a Baptist missionary group.

She hoped to traffic children under the guise of being a missionary. Unfortunately, the others become guilty by association.

you have to read the story....some of the parents ARE alive, no question about that.

and there is no orphanage in the DR, just a hotel?

I may be naive in this case, but I'm usually with the American's until I know everything.
