First Poll after SOTU shows very high approval

NOTE: Why do presidents' approval ratings go up after SOTU speeches? Because the nation really does want to come together, and this is the best time to show that. In actual practice, though, it never really happens, so Obama's ratings will come back down to earth very soon, just as Bush's did.

Are you saying the polarization is too strong for the majority of elected officials to find and work from a pragmatic center?

My concern is that the Democrats will be too concerned about holding their seats, and the Republicans will be too concerned about taking their seats for anything to get done this year.

I hope that is not the case.

As a point of clarification, this isn't a "poll taken after the SOTU' in the sense that it's comparable to a national poll.

It's a poll taken of people who watched the state of the union. You think that group might tend to like him more than others?

I pray your concern happens.

The first poll after the SOTU shows high approval in pretty much all counts, except faith that he can implement his vision.

I am curious about the results of the rest of the polls but it looks like they haven't been published yet.

Let's see... the latest President Campaign Speech said..

Blame Bush, Blame the Republicans, Blame Bush, Blame the Republicans, It's not My Fault, Spend More, Raise Taxes, Punish the Rich, and Don't Do Anything Useful.

Of COURSE people that watch See BS gave it a favorable rating.

What did the over 50% of Americans that watch Fox have to say?

Why do you bother contemplating my political ideology when you haven't the slightest clue of where it stems?

One doesn't need to see the roots to see which way the tree is pointed.

No libertarian can support the Messiah's message of huger government, less freedom.

Would it have been worse without the stimulus? I know here some jobs are still here because of the stimulus, not to mention a smaller increase in tuition for students.

Since the Stimulus hasn't done anything useful, no. I do recall the propaganda for the Stimulus saying that if we don't enact the Stimulus unemployment was going to hit 8%. With the Stimulus it's headed for 11%.

Amazingly, the number of jobs "saved or created" (what a bull**** phrase) by this Stimulus were inflated by the number of imaginary Congressional districts reporting "s or c" jobs. Gee, why didn't we just add all the jobs in these fantasy districts, since every single job in these new districts was a "new" job, not just the jobs imaginatively created by the Stimulus? If each new district had 10,000 jobs, the Messiah might have managed to create MILLIONS of new imaginary jobs to take credit for.

There's one specific reason college tuitions are too high. The government subsidizes them.

Can you piece together why home sales are down?

10% unemployment rate.

Uncertainty in the nation's economic future, compounded by the presence of a moron at the tiller.

The moron's first year nearly two trillion dollar deficit, with more on the way.

The narrowest margin by which the nation was saved from socialized health care.

Other circumstances similar to the above that have destroyed the consumer's faith in the future, and makes him unwilling to buy a different house.

I think the SOTU speech was piss poor at best. Basically, everything he said amounted to running away from problems. It's a mess, and it doesn't seem like we're gonna fix this problem any time soon.

The biggest question that those folks can't answer is, "where's the money come from?" I've yet to hear the big government crowd answer that one.

Obama's answer is going to be the same as Bush's was: Money grows on trees.

Obama's answer is going to be the same as Bush's was: Money grows on trees.

Silly danarhea, money doesn't grow on trees. It comes out of a printing press.

littlest SOTU i've ever seen, that's one mighty small agenda

and 2/3 of that was republican

ending cap gains, drilling offshore, nukes, clean coal, middle class tax cuts, a few pennies of help for small biz

he's totally deprioritized health care

but he's still calling for his debt commission which the senate just killed 2 days ago

delusional

he's gonna force our trading partners to comply with their environmental responsibilities

when? before he meets with the leaders of THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN? or after?

before copenhagen comes apart? or subsequent?

he's gonna double our exports in 5 years

before he cuts the deficit in half or after?

before unemployment caps at 8%, or must we wait til it's 12?

his stimulus was an utter failure, so now he's gonna do ANOTHER

except he sure can't call it "stimulus," now it's a JOBS BILL

LOL!

he's gonna have a LOT of trouble getting that thru his OWN senate

he repeatedly called out the senate, contrasting the contrarians up there with his more coooperative caucus in pelosi's place

he took on health care, he says, NOT cuz it was popular

LOL!

that's sure not what he told us for a year, we were sposed to love it

stunning admissions

all the "lobbying and horse trading"

the "pet projects and political grudges"

it's "more than a deficit of dollars, it's a deficit of trust"

we've had some pretty big "political setbacks this year, some of them deserved"

(no kidding)

on so many issues, complete denial

his call for his debt commision, already dead

his pretty planet with no nukes

his 2 million jobs created/saved by stimulus

his reading of MA---"campaign fever" has come early this year

HE, of all people, bemoans the perpetual campaign

MA is just "politics" to the tone deaf president

his spending freeze---pelosi REMAINED SEATED (LOL!)

the ONLY TIME the palsied speakeress stayed parked

so many notes off key---less than half his speech was about the economy, he devoted so much time to DADT and hate crimes and what he wants to call "politics"

ie, HIS AGENDA

and even when he does discuss the numbers dearest to american hearts, he still doesn't fully get it

like tuition, for example

americans are concerned about their kids getting into college, but that's nowhere near as high priority to most of us as it is to him

health care reform will reduce our deficit he claims (LOL!)---BUT NOT ENOUGH

wow!

backwards and accelerating

"i increased the deficit to prevent a depression, i'm convinced it was the right thing to do"

but today americans are having to tighten THEIR belts, so i feel i need to COMPLETELY REVERSE COURSE

this president's got CHUTZPAH, you gotta give him that

openness---LOL!

transparency---LOL!

accountability

ending the "outsize influence of lobbyists"

concern for "the women of iran"

the condemnation of the perpetual campaign

rewarding CEO's for their failures

meanwhile, here on earth, geithner got grilled yesterday by a congress grossly angered by all the grease

and the secrets

our pivoting populist today RAISES THE DEBT CEILING TWO TRIL

spending freeze, my ass

his own party is pulverizing him over the mirandizing of mutallab and the movement of ksm to manhattan (which aint never gonna happen)

the ny fed telling AIG to keep secrets from the SEC is turning into a major scandal

presidential polling is always unique

americans' opinions about their president are VERY personal

unlike congress, unlike media, unlike issues

american presidents become extremely FAMILIAR

ie, almost part of the FAMILY

AMERICANS ARE VERY RELUCTANT TO DUMP ON THEIR PRESIDENTS

that's why when a prez gets down into the low 50's he's in big trouble

last nite's was the WEIRDEST sotu i have ever seen

also one of the longest, tho certainly not boring

the guy's got guts, he really sticks it in there

but it's all politics, his issues were almost microscopic

and his biggest items leaned much farther right than left

oh well, party on

Obama's answer is going to be the same as Bush's was: Money grows on trees.

A tax on the wealthy Americans is on its way... probably sometime in early 2011. Exogenous supply shocks are impossible to predict, however barring a major embargo, catastrophe and/or war, higher inflation will push cyclical unemployment far below its highs. The US stimulus has yet to truly circulate, and given time (along with extremely low interest rates) such measures will be quite helpful in aiding a strong recovery.

If your issue is you do not believe they can "shut down the presses" in time to prevent higher inflation, why?

The bold is a very important point. And given the guys clear ability to govern behind the bully pulpit, many of the issues discussed last night will (hopefully ;) ) surface. I like the idea of nuclear power, tax cuts, and a jobs package.

Well.... Unlike you, i am not an ideologue. :2wave:

I didn't read the whole thread but it should be noted that the viewers who were polled were more Democratic than average Americans.

Shhh the right are use to polls adding up to 140+%! Dont confuse the right too much!
Oh Pete, we know you believe every poll that adds up to 140%.

Obama said some good stuff, some of it even true. But none of it will happen that way. He'll continue to ram UHC, taxes and other liberal programs into the hopper as long as he can.
