Toyota Suspends Sales of 8 Models After Accelerator Pedals Keep Sticking

the world's largest auto maker is on impluse speed vs warp speed!

who just bought a toyota?

mtm1963

Not me. I have a Chevy Cavalier, made in America........

With Japanese parts.

Nah, safety problems happen, this is far from the first, won't be the last.

certainly, but i don't recall a car company halting sales for safety problems as toyota has done.

They have to if it's that widespread......

Just listening to the Morning news now--and they are blaming the floor mats for the accidents still. ---Even the cars that didn't have floor mattes. this tells me there is a serious problem they don't want to face. --aliens I bet, are behind it.

I bought a 2009 Toyota Tacoma in October 2008. The only problem I have had is the radio volume control goes out when the vehicle sits in the hot sun. Toyota replaced the radio, and after 8 months, the second one had the same problem. I had a 3rd radio on order and at Christmas time put in a brand new JVC radio. Problem fixed. The Internet is full of the volume control radio woes. Unfortunately, I was one of those who discovered that the Tacomas had radio problems.

I laughed about the mats getting stuck under the accelerator. When I bought my truck, it had cloth mats, which wouldn't have lasted long with the mud I track in. I replaced them with rubber mats. Problem solved. Fortunately, my truck wasn't on the recall list for the accelerator problem. The only accelerator problem I have is a lead foot.

Another thing I can't figure is why all the fatalities with the stuck accelerator? All you have to do is put your transmission in neutral and coast. Duh! Then again, I only drive a stick shift. I suppose those with automatics don't think of the obvious.

they haven't quite solved the problem yet. we'll wait and see.

who wants to buy a toyota now?

I'm on my 3rd Toyota pickup, and I keep them just about forever. When I got rid of my 94 pickup, it had 274,000 miles on it. They are just like the Energizer Bunny. They keep going and going.

Wait, they actually tried that?

Yes, they did. I got mail on that one. I also laughed at their instructions on what to do if your accelerator stuck. They told you to look down at the floor to see what was causing the accelerator to stick and see if you can dislodge the acclerator with your hand. No wonder there have been so many fatalities.

Damn Mexicans...

Wait, that's not what you mean..

Yup, remember all those old Ford SUVs that would roll over when people took a corner too fast?

Well, common sense tells you when you have a vehicle with a high ground clearance, that will happen. Oh wait. We're dealing with the idiot generation that has no common sense. Common sense has to be put in the instruction manual under Duh.

I think people panic when they are confronted with a unexpected full acceleration, with no warning. I can see that getting my attention for sure.

I've had that happen occasionally with my vehicle, it's older but I still love it so I keep it around. If the Toyotas have the same problem as mine it is probably the return spring on the choke mechanism, accelerators are pretty simple even in these computerized vehicle days.

ouch!! what a nightmare!!

ABC News Reports Highlighted Deaths, Hundreds of Accidents Linked to Hazard.

Toyota has suspended sales of eight of its most popular vehicle models while the motor company investigates sticking accelerator pedals, following reports by ABC News' Brian Ross that examined incidents of random acceleration, some of which resulted in fatalities.
PHOTO Toyota on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2010 announced that it is instructing Toyota dealers to temporarily suspend sales of eight models involved in the recall announced on Jan. 21.

Toyota dealers across the country have been instructed not to sell the 2009-2010 RAV4, 2009-2010 Corolla, 2009-2010 Matrix, 2005-2010 Avalon, 2010 Highlander, 2007-2010 Tundra, 2008-2010 Sequoia, and certain 2007-2010 Camry models

so much for that quality thingy, huh?

I don't know how they got that rep to begin with, I've seen some of the most severe regular use/low stress failures come out of friends Toyotas over the years, everything from an airbag sensor short, to a steering column fracture, to a crankshaft actually breaking in half at mid-rev and sending the entire piston assembly into the block.

Once upon a time, I drove a Toyota. It was the crappiest piece of crap vehicle I ever owned. You couldn't pay me enough to own another.

This little escapade merely solidifies my feelings. Floor mats, my ass.

I've never had this issue in my 1979 Pontiac.
Or my 1979 Olds
Or my 1981 Pontiac
Or my 1984 Ford
Or my 1995 Chevy
Or my 1999 Ram
Or my 2003 Jeep

I have never had any problems with American Cars since I started driving in 1969. Never been stranded and never been towed. My brother who owns a Toyota can not make that claim.
Fords quality and technology have surpassed Toyotas.

Really, the whole thing is absurd. The issue, whatever it is, stems from the sytem being more complicated than it needs to be.

There are TWO throttle return springs on my 1970 Q-jet; the 2nd one is there in case the first one breaks. 40 years old and 100% dependable.

Isn't the Toyota problem with the gas pedal getting stuck in the carpet or floormat?
