South Carolina Lt. Governor Bauer Says He May Not Be “Politically Correct,” But He’s Honest

Last week Lt. Governor Andre Bauer, who is now running for Governor of South Carolina, compared poor folks to wild animals in a town hall meeting. As expected, his comments are drawing criticism from several minority groups (and non-minorities)

In this case, looking at it objectively, he is right, but as he says, he could have delivered the idea more eloquently. Dependency is probably the biggest problem with the left's social programs, and I personally feel Bauer should be criticised for saying this the wrong way, not for the idea he said in and of itself.

Jon Stewart did a great bit on this guy and his comments...

Oh good lord, that was just wrong, in a hilarious way.

If there is an award for stupidest political comment, Bauer should win it. No matter what he meant, as I read the full quote, I just kept thinking "he can't make this any worse", and then he went and proved me wrong.

If someone is offended by his comment, I say to you, "If the shoe fits...."

My husband's mother was forced to get food stamps to support her two children (his father had walked out on them). As soon as they could get off the stamps, they did. His mother was working two jobs and sometimes three to support her two children. None of them have been on them again. That is the purpose of assistance.

There is no doubt America's social programs have some fraud and waste. There is no doubt there are criminals within the system taking advantage of others.

But Bauer is not going to change any of that. He's running for Governor and he's pandering to his all white, blue collar base. He's blaming welfare queens and "big gubment" for our problems. He's full of crap. If he really wants to go after welfare queens he can start on Wall Street and then go right down the list of Fortune 100 companies located in the US.

Welfare queens didn't have anything to do with the piss poor job of governing they've been doing down in South Carolina. Maybe if their governor had spent more time in office and less time chasing brown tail down in Argentina their state would be in better shape.

Andre Bauer is not overly popular in SC. He is considered a lightweight.

Best thing I know to say about what he said...

He was wrong to say that.... but he wasn't far wrong.

Of course, there are people who genuinely need the help, because of problems outside of their control. But then the people who are freeloaders ruin it for those people by making the project look bad. And I don't think there are as many people who genuinely need the help as there are freeloaders.

Aren't wild animals independent? Domesticated animals are dependent. The guy had it all backwards. Who says he is right?

And he says that no one has said anything about doing anything about poverty? What is he smoking? Yet another jackass, that doesn't know what socialism is, and advocates for ideas that will keep the poor that way.

I think you're right.

Therein lies the problem.....;)
But it does encourage irresponsible breeding......;)

I agree. There is a huge problem with unethical people who take advantage of the system. But to get rid of social programs entirely would create an even bigger mess.

I think the best approach for things like welfare would be a checklist with basic things like:
1. Is this person clean?
2. Are they improving their job skills?
3. Are they improving their job finding skills?
4. Is this person literate?
etc.

Many people who are on welfare rolls do not have even basic skills like those I defined and are borderline dysfunctional, so an effort should be made to teach them those skills and even trade skills like plumbing or carpentry. If the person does not improve, assign them a job with some agency digging ditches or some other basic labor and if they fail at that, the welfare checks should either be reduced or stop until they improve.

For the medical social programs, there should audit upon audit. A significant percentage of expenses should be proven and it should be compensated at cost + 3% to the medical facility.

he certainly is not right. but yes, he's honest. he believes poor people are akin to wild animals.

The most troubling aspect - IMHO - about poverty and federal assistance are those people encapsulated in the margins. For example, a family with a father figure who does not make enough to support all of his families needs, but makes just enough not to be eligible for said assistance.

Less troubling, although an issue none the less are those people who make more than enough to fulfill basic needs for their children, but are forced to make a decision to pay $100,000 per year for 4 children to attend universities (making retirement savings near impossible), or have their children assume large amounts of debt (while being able to save for retirement).

These instances of America are never mentioned, while these are the type of people who demonstrate how decency is still prevalent in this country.

Domesticated animals serve man. Wild animals that are fed by well meaning tender hearts reproduce and become a public nuisance.

Contrast cattle to skunks or raccoons. The cattle become tasty and nutritious steaks, but the skunks winter over under your shed, have babies, and raid the chicken coop.
