Leaders favouring peace talks with Taliban

If talk is the answer, why didn't they try that in the beginning??

Ask Jimmy Carter. Nice, caring and wonderful man. Sucky former President who thought he could talk our adversaries out of anything.

The man was all about 'talk', yet peace talks have always had limited successes.

I digress....

While I don't think we should consider never trying peace talks, there comes a point in time that one should realize that some countries (leaders) cannot be reasoned with, rendering any sort of "talks" pointless.

Obama is going to pull US troops out of Afghanistan in 2011 (the same year that Canadian troops are pulling out), presumably the rest of the alliance will leave at the same time. It's coming down to the wire, something has to be sorted out, since we have not defeated the Taliban and it doesn't look likely that we will.

I would not hold my breath on that one.....

Like he said he'd pull combatants out of Gitmo? And he seems to be quivering on his decision to bring KSM to NYC. What he says means nothing, we don't know that he's going to pull troops.

Canadians doing hero work in Afghanistan, clearly our closest allies with the Brits and Australians even.

You can imagine a Taliban or al-Qaeda fighter dug in some hole fearing a Predator drone at any given second eating goat for the fifth night in a row, wiht a side dish of cave moss saying the exact same thing. "We haven't defeated or gotten the infidel out of the ME, we haven't defeated the Western powers and it looks like we never will."

Power-sharing is a sign of weakness, and the Taliban will take advantage of it.

It won't happen. First off, we can't seem to handle the war correctly to bring conclusion. Second, Obama is not going to yank us out of an area we have no business being in. He's going to continue the status quo, which is the establishment of forever war.

Peace talks with who? Terrorists we're working on exterminating? Shouldn't we rather focus on building up the government of Afghanistan and helping them develop the strengths they need to continue killing Taliban after we leave them on their own.

"Peace" Talks when the battles aren't won, with an enemy avowed to your death, aren't wise or practical.

Sounds like a sensible approach to me. Fighting has proven not to get us anywhere really, a viable political solution is necessary.

I think we are turning japanese, I think we are turning japanese..... :doh

Um, that's exactly what we've been doing since 2003. The Afghan gov't is corrupt, and through corruption and incompetence the Afghan police and military are a joke.

Frankly, I don't think you know what you're talking about. As I said before, this is not a conventional war! There isn't some army standing out there in the open for us to blow up. The Taliban are Afghans and Pakistanis, who can blend in with the population.
