The officers decided the suspect needed immediate medical attention, and an ambulance crew took him to the burn unit at the University of Michigan Medical Center.

Along the way, Abdulmutallab repeatedly made incriminating statements to the CBP officers guarding him. He told them he had acted alone on the plane and had been trying to take down the aircraft.

Abdulmutallab arrived at the hospital just before 2 p.m. Still under guard, Abdulmutallab told a doctor treating him that he had tried to trigger the explosive. The Nigerian said it didn't cause a blast, but instead began popping and ignited a fire on his groin and legs.

FBI agents from the Detroit bureau arrived at the hospital around 2:15 p.m., and were briefed by the Customs agents and officers as Abdulmutallab received medical treatment.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., FBI agents began interviewing the suspect in his hospital room, joined by a CBP officer and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent.

The suspect spoke openly, said one official, talking in detail about what he'd done and the planning that went into the attack. Other counterterrorism officials speaking on condition of anonymity said it was during this questioning that he admitted he had been trained and instructed in the plot by al-Qaida operatives in Yemen.

The interview lasted about 50 minutes. Before they began questioning Abdulmutallab, the FBI agents decided not to give him his Miranda warnings providing his right to remain silent.

He's singing like a canary and....

There was no effort to call in the elite federal High-Value Interrogation Group, a special unit of terror specialists that the Obama administration said early last year it would create to deal with terror suspects captured abroad.

Last week, Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair said the unit should have been called in after Abdulmatullab's arrest. But even if federal officials wanted to expand its use to domestic cases, the special team was not ready for action, FBI Director Robert Mueller told Congress last week.

Based on the instructions from Washington, the second interview was conducted by different FBI agents and others with the local joint terrorism task force.

Such a move is not unusual in cases where investigators or prosecutors want to protect themselves from challenges to evidence or statements.

By bringing in a so-called "clean team" of investigators to talk to the suspect, federal officials aimed to ensure that Abdulmutallab's statements would still be admissible if the failure to give him his Miranda warning led a judge to rule out the use of his first admissions.

Let me guess......

In the end, though, the "clean team" of interrogators did not prod more revelations from the suspect.

Having rested and received more extensive medical treatment, Abdulmutallab was told of his right to remain silent and right to have an attorney.

He remained silent.

Wouldn't anyone?

His junk is probably scorched. He's at a bit of a disadvantage in the men's realm.

He ain't got the balls.

I love how his plan has failed and has turned himself into an international joke. What a loser stuck in jail with crackling for balls.

I wonder if that's actually true.

When one's balls get schwacked, does it affect the voice?

The pain might cause the throat muscles to clench, resulting in a higher voice. But no.

I think nothing much would happen unless he lost both. If he's got all or part of a testicle left, it's still pumping out testosterone, which would lower the voice.

Too bad they'll never turn him loose in general population. I bet he'd be a real hit with the sisters!

His plan didn't fail, his technology failed. He trained, packed his underwear, paid cash for his one way ticket, checked in no luggage and got on a US bound flight. He came so close, his testimony says he did what he was supposed to do, his crotch bomb didn't work, his plan....that was an absolute disaster and should have been thwarted...worked to near perfection.

What a great thread. the part that kills me is all of the actionable intelligence that wasn't collected because the current regime is far more concerned with gaining political advantage with it's base than protecting americans from muslim terrorists.

You seem to object that they read him his rights and he chose to make use of them.

Do you think he'll get off?
The government has a virtually assured conviction. They'd have to royally screw the pooch to not get this guy in ADX Florence for the rest of his life.

What won't happen is we won't be able to gain timely intelligence from him.

If he actually is a loner I can't imagine he'd have all that much that would be useful to US intelligence anyway.

As long as this government thinks it can defeat terrorism with nothing but brute force, it will fail. An ounce of intel is worth a pound of airport security.

I have no problem with reading him his rights...after interrogation by trained professionals and after the military is sure this terrorist scum doesn't have info vital to the war effort..or that could save trooper's lives.

Do you think he'll get off?

Given you seem to think he should be afforded rights, you tell me.

Should have just masturbated on some critical wiring. That would prevent having to smuggle any illicit items onto a plane.

Edit: Of course, I doubt planes are designed with any critical wiring easily accessable to passengers, so someone would notice.

Besides, now that his nuts are all crispy, it would have been his last chance for a good long while ... :doh

Why go through all that trouble and risk a blister? It's clear this Cat coming right from Yemen, 23 years old, paying over $2,300 in cash for a one way ticket, had no luggage to check in....why on earth employ the effort of self satisfaction, why even look for wiring critical to flight?

Al-Haji could have been carrying plastic explosives that would not have failed and could have torn that plane in two, nobody even asked him what his name was.

I see. And how has Islamic terrorism been defeated throughout history?

Is there an example of a defeat of terrorisim by any other method?

Actually there is. The American supported and financed IRA was 'defeated' in the sense that they are no longer blowing up Brits. The Royal Army kicking down doors in Belfast did not work, but negotiation did. It was a question of intelligence (and not just the military kind,) and taking the trouble to find out the root causes of the problem. Nobody gets everything they want, but compromises which satisfy both parties are often possible.

It seems one of the key questions was never asked following the WTC and Pentagon attacks. That question was "Why do people hate us so much they are willing to die to do us harm?"

Until that question is asked, and satisfactorily answered, we may deploy untold battalions without success.

He confessed his crime.

The trial should be fast tracked, he should be sentenced to death, delayed only for as long as he cooperates with interrogators.

He wanted to die for his cause, I see no reason why he shouldn't die for our cause.

This is the United States. He should receive the same due process as everyone else.
