London, England (CNN) -- Britain raised its threat level Friday from substantial to severe, indicating a terrorist attack is "highly likely," Home Secretary Alan Johnson said.

However, he added, "there is no intelligence to suggest an attack is imminent."

He encouraged the public "to be vigilant and help police and security forces in their work."

"We know this country faces a threat from international terrorism," Johnson said. "The fact we've gone to a different level with respect to that is part of the system for protecting the public against that threat."

An international conference on Afghanistan is scheduled to begin Thursday in London. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon are co-hosting the meeting of foreign ministers, U.N. and NATO representatives, and members of such international organizations as the World Bank.

The increase in threat level comes two days after Brown announced Britain is expanding its security watch list and has suspended all direct flights to Yemen as part of a series of new counterterrorism measures.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a statement saying Britain is "raising their measures to effectively where we are with the airport security measures that we have taken and announced over the last few weeks."

That refers to an increase in federal air marshals and enhanced screening methods in the wake of an attempted terror attack on a U.S.-bound flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day.

The suspect in that attack, Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, spent time in Yemen and is said to have acquired the device used in the foiled bombing from militants in that country. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for the attempted attack.

The U.S. terror threat level for domestic and international flights remains at "orange," or "high."

Thoughts?

This should come as no surprise when the U.K. has allowed so many Muslim Radical Cult members to invade their Country. They alone with France are so inundated with them they are under calls to incorporate Sharia law.

The incompetent Homeland Security Secretary Janet (I never met and illegal alien I didn't like) Napolitano's woudn't know a threat if it was setting fire to her current girlfriend.

As long as Islam is mistakenly thought of as a religion and the Cult it truly is and is allowed to grow there will be no security anywhere these wackos are allowed to roam free.

Muslims are becoming more radical over time in Britain rather than less, and it's Britain's own, d@mn fault since they have been mollycoddling the extremists under the misapprehension they are somehow combating racism. Until Britain adopts some reasonable expectations for assimilation and develops a little backbone, the situation with potential terrorism will only increase. The article mentioned that they may be a target for international terrorism. Target, heck -- considering the rise in British born extremists, they are going to be an exporter.

.

Britain has already submitted to Sharia in part, and has gone so far as to make sharia rulings binding by British law. It is only sharia family court now sanctioned, but these courts do not give equal voice to women, so are discriminatory by very nature. That Britain would actually go so far as codify second class status for some women is indicative of just how far they have gone already in their campaign to appease radical Islam.

Yeah right. 'Severe'.

I give the Govt. 6 out of 10 in attempts to try and deflect attention away from Blair's upcoming star performance in front of the committee this week.

If Islam is a cult, so is Christianity. Just because a very very very small percentage of Muslims are radical, it does not mean they all are. The moment we start discriminating on Religion is the moment we lose sense of ourselves, and it is the moment we lose against the actual radicals.

My apathy's at fever pitch.
Laila's assessment is highly credible. The war criminal Blair's tribunal appearance is being clumsily shielded by the "terror" smokescreen.

However, there is a very very very large percentage of Muslims who sit back on their laurels and do nothing to eradicate violent extremism within their religion.

It's kinda like the south 50 years ago, when whites didn't agree with the means that groups like the KKK were using, but they did agree with the end game that would come of it. I see no difference between that and Islam.

Blair is no more of a war criminal than any other person in this forum. (hopefully)

This is simply ridiculously dishonest. Muslim countries provide some of the most invaluable information for dealing with terrorism. What have you done lately to stop terrorism? What has Pat Robertson done to stop terrorism? Jerry Falwell? What have any day to day Christians done to eradicate abortion bombings? No. This argument seems to fall flat on its face. I do not see anti-abortion providing clinic bombings or protests against the killing of abortion providers.
