Should academia, science, or media have a liberal slant to begin with?
That's like asking if talk radio or TV opinion shows should have a conservative slant. It's a meaningless question; they are what they are, not what you think they "should" be. There is nothing preventing a conservative from starting a newspaper or a liberal from starting a talk radio channel, other than financial viability. Different groups of people prefer to get their news/ideas from different sources. Nothing wrong with that.
From my own perspective, I never listen to the radio and I rarely watch television. So something like Air America or Countdown With Keith Olbermann would be totally wasting their money trying to appeal to me. But apparently that format is very effective for the demographic Rush Limbaugh is targeting.
