UN climate chief admits mistake on Himalayan glaciers warning - Times Online

The UN’s top climate change body has issued an unprecedented apology over its flawed prediction that Himalayan glaciers were likely to disappear by 2035.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said yesterday that the prediction in its landmark 2007 report was “poorly substantiated” and resulted from a lapse in standards. “In drafting the paragraph in question the clear and well-established standards of evidence, required by the IPCC procedures, were not applied properly,” the panel said. “The chair, vice-chair and co-chairs of the IPCC regret the poor application of IPCC procedures in this instance.”

The stunning admission is certain to embolden critics of the panel, already under fire over a separate scandal involving hacked e-mails last year.

This flimsy excuse to tax the people of the world into one-world oblivion is falling apart like a house of cards.

So what are you saying, that the glaciers are no disappearing in the Himalayas or Andes mountains.. or even here in Europe and in the US?

So what are you saying, that the glaciers are no disappearing in the Himalayas or Andes mountains.. or even here in Europe and in the US?

No.

They recede, they come back, they recede, they come back.

It's been going on for a very long time.

The language of this piece says it all.

"unprecedented apology"
"flawed prediction"
“poorly substantiated”
"lapse in standards"
"procedures, were not applied properly,”
"poor application of IPCC procedures”
"stunning admission"

No, he's saying that the IPCC report that supposedly summarizes the views of 100's of scientists has just been shown to make a "very high probability" claim based on the views of ZERO scientists.

NONE

ZILTCH!!!

It emerged last week that the prediction was based not on a consensus among climate change experts but on a media interview with a single Indian glaciologist in 1999. That scientist, Syed Hasnain, has now told The Times that he never made such a specific forecast in his interview with the New Scientist magazine.

“I have not made any prediction on date as I am not an astrologer but I did say they were shrinking fast,” he said. “I have never written 2035 in any of my research papers or reports.”

Al Gore has been very quiet in recent months, eh?

Climategate, followed by the Copenhagen disaster, followed by this.......

It's going the direction of healthcare, now that I think about it.

What he's saying is that it's ****ing pathetic that the UN and science journals declared something quite important to be factually accurate based solely on a misconstrual of a single phone interview with a little-known scientist over 10 years ago.

You don't see a problem with that?

One can only hope that they're applying more rigorous scrutiny to the rest of their claims.

OH sure I see the problem, but I also realize that it is just politics. The reality is that the glaciers are becoming smaller and disappearing and that will have a huge impact on billions of people. By focusing on this and other mistakes, you and your deniers are taking focus away from the very real climate changes we are seeing all over the place.

The climate has changed since the earth came into existence.

At one time it was very tropical, now it isn't.
It may go back that way, it may not.

Let's not always pretend it's some disastrous event, especially if it has happened before.

Oh there is no denying that and I agree, however one has to ask the question.. Considering the rate of decline of glaciers and similar, is that normal or is it not? I say it is not based on the historical evidence I have seen. But that does not change the fact that the deniers are sticking their heads in the sand and claiming it is "normal" and wont hurt us. Its like a drug addict that refuses to admit that he or she has a problem.

It does not change the fact that we have to deal with the disappearance of the glaciers one way or another. Billions of people are dependent on them for their clean drinking water, what to do about that? How about the insane weather patterns we have seen the last few months, setting record after record. Yes that is part of global warming too.

We should be doing something to possibly slow the decline if we could and at worst have plans in place to deal with the disasters for billions of people that is on the way.

Could be normal, but maybe it isn't.

Sometimes there is no normal, in one epoch of time they may not have existed at all, at another they may have been 10x larger.

They may have move to where the water is, don't know what else to tell them.

Recorded history of weather has been very short compared to the existence of humans.
It could be normal, it may not be.

We don't really know if there will be disasters or not.

Personally, I've become so numb to all the disaster predictions of the past few years.
Like the swine flu scare that wasn't anything, I was indifferent to it because I couldn't do anything to realistically avoid it.

I heard the correct year was 2350, not 2035.

They may have move to where the water is, don't know what else to tell them.

And where is that? There are hundreds of millions of people who directly get their water from the Himalayas, both for drinking and for crops. If we add into the picture the rest of the sub continent that is totally dependent on the rivers coming from the Himalayas for water and irrigation, then were exactly do those 1+ billion people go?

How about Chile? A lot of their water comes from the Andes mountains and its glaciers. Ups no more.. bugger, oh well, they can just move where?

It is an utter simplistic and arrogant attitude to say "they have to move to where the water is". you do know that clean water is the nr 1 issue for almost every country on the planet right?

Recorded history of weather has been very short compared to the existence of humans.
It could be normal, it may not be.

Actually that is incorrect. Through the icecores of Greenland we are able to go back hundreds of thousands of years to see both temperature and other things. We can accurately say when there was ice ages and when the planet heated up and often why it heated up or cooled down. The difference now is human activity, and its impact on the climate. Now we can disagree on that, but what we can not ignore is that the climate is changing and we have to live with the consequences of this. And ignoring the issue with glaciers is short-sighted and stupid since they are a very important part of human life in many parts of the world. Ignoring the fact that Australia and parts of Africa are in a decade long almost drought, that deserts are eating up land that once could be used to grow food that is very much needed. And it of course does not help that Brazil is clearing the one thing that might help.. the rain forest.. but hey we can all discuss this till we are green in the face and then live with the consequences of having to relocate 1+ billion people to your town and cities.. would you like that?

We don't really know if there will be disasters or not.

Yes we do, we can see it going on daily. There are droughts, floods, fires, and other disasters. I have seen it around me, having the first 2 months of the rainy season here produce zero rain and then having the next month produce so much rain that people were killed due to flash floods. That is not normal.

Personally, I've become so numb to all the disaster predictions of the past few years.

I have not, since they have been pretty accurate in their over all predictions. They predicted erratic weather patterns and guess what.. they came.

Like the swine flu scare that wasn't anything, I was indifferent to it because I couldn't do anything to realistically avoid it.

Swine flu was something, it killed lots of people and still does. Ignoring it would have cost even more lives. If the flu virus had mutated then it could have been far far worse.. we can count lucky stars it did not.

I heard the correct year was 2350, not 2035.

And that is unrealistic. Just look at the pictures out there of glaciers around the world taken 40 years ago and now.. they are considerably smaller if there at all.

Just look at the pictures out there of glaciers around the world taken 40 years ago and now...

What would a picture of glaciers then and now.....400 years ago look like...what do you think you'd see then?

Well that's what I read somewhere is what the UN guy said.

Considering we knew the planet was in a mini ice age during that period then the glaciers would more than likely have been larger.

Not the point though, we can see drastic changes in half a century and considering even the anti-climate change people agree that climate changes are long term not suddenly (unless there is outside factors), then how do you explain it?

Considering we knew the planet was in a mini ice age during that period then the glaciers would more than likely have been larger.

Really? So...coming out of that mini ice age, we'd expect temps to rise and thus...glaciers to melt...correct?

then how do you explain it?

Easy......I get three of four whack job politicians and a few undertalented "scientists" and make some eye popping claim. Convince everyone it's man made......win some Nobels......make lots of money. Why do I need to explain it....when you libs have already declared it man made carbon emissions that is the cause?

I could give you several real explanations. Ozone. Obama's hot air polluting the atmosphere. Congress' health care debacle that is the stench equal of methane gas emitted by your common Yeti.

You Sir...cannot prove without doubt that these glaciers melting is the result of man's activity on this planet. And until you can, it's not up to me to explain, it's up to me to stop all the bs legislation and burdenous taxes pretedending as if we're certain this is man made.

You cannot prove man made global warming....Hugo.

IMO, another example of how some persons attempted to make something out of nothing.

My personal position on climate change is that it's going happen no matter what we do. We can’t affect it, so we have to adapt to it.

That program was absolutely, positively, fantastic!

It used logic, reason and ALL the climate science available, to blow the man made global warming argument completely out of the water.

GREAT POST!

.

It's a little disheartining. Initially, I had full faith in the IPCC. Sure, climatologists are just physics students who flunked out. Yeah, the IPCC obviously has a confirmation bias. But if something about the climate was going to be catergorized and explained; I thought the IPCC would do it.

Of course, I never thought they'd turn to some half-assed scientist's media interview. ;)

In another post you laid out an argument rife with qualifiers. Fact is... there is no consensus on Global Warming being man made. What is fact is if we have a fraction of a percent influence, it's not worth throwing huge sums of money at it.

So... pull your head out of the sand... or some other place where it's asphyxiating.

No we don't.

That is pure bull****.

How about the insane weather patterns we have seen the last few months, setting record after record. Yes that is part of global warming too.
First we had the new Ice Age on the way, then Global Warming... when that was being debunked it changed to Climate Change, and their latest charade... Extreme Weather.

Some people will believe anything... no matter how much evidence is brought forth about fixed models, bad math, and outright scheming to cook the books.

We should be doing something to possibly slow the decline if we could and at worst have plans in place to deal with the disasters for billions of people that is on the way.
Are you Algore or Ted Danson? The bull**** alarmism and verbal theatrics are nausiating.

This is typical Europe Sheeple speak. There is no discussion there, and all the airwaves vomit out this propaganda. Fact is... I have never seen a Global Warming contrarian on Euro TV. Why is that?
