And here is the part that impresses me:

Looking toward recovery and rebuilding, Obama tapped his two immediate predecessors, Bush and Bill Clinton, to oversee private fundraising — following Bush's model of enlisting Clinton and his own father, George H.W. Bush, after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. First lady Michelle Obama also was taping a public service announcement on behalf of the Red Cross.

You have Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, George H. W. Bush, and a myriad host of Republicans and Democrats, who all can't stand each other, working in lock step to help resolve one of the worst humanitarian crises in history. Too bad they can't work like this at home, but I'll take it. It makes me feel better about possibilities, rather than pessimistic about differences. But think, for just a moment. If they can work together like this, what's to stop them on the home front? I know, I know. The expression "Yes we can" has been done to death, but guess what? We actually CAN, if we just let ourselves do it. America can move mountains, if we all put our minds to it, and leave the bitter partisanship at home, preferably in the garbage can.

What's to stop them from performing miracles at home? Only themselves. Coming together on Haiti is the proof.

This is some kick ass PR. No votes to win, or lose, in Haiti.

Lives to save trumps PR. Not everything is only political. Just ask the Republicans and Democrats who are working together. There comes a time when sniping must stop, and both sides pull together to do something morally worthwhile.

Because the Dems ideas will bring us closer to Haiti than being our best.

How long before this is used against "W"?

You are pathetic partisan hack living off the misery of others.. you should be ashamed.

Shame on all those right or left, who are exploiting this catastrophe either politically or financially. Shame on Rush and Robertson and others following those two morons.

Kudos to the US .. well those from both sides of the political spectrum that have stepped up and put aside politics to help millions in need in Haiti. I am glad the US still can show the human side despite wars and economic crisis, show it as they did after the Tusanami and earthquakes in Pakistan and other disasters around the world.

And Kudos to the rest of the world as well who are sending money, people and material to Haiti.

We may have our differences on policy and may have spats over details on who did what, where and how much, but when it comes to crunch time and the lives of hundreds of thousands are in danger from a natural disaster then the world stands together. We did it during Katrina, the Pakistani earthquake, the Christmas Tsunami and many others.

You should take some of your own damn advice for a change Pete. We have troops dying overseas and you've been politicizing that for years. And since the US will likely being paying for the lion's share of this disaster relief AS USUAL (meaning the US taxpayers like me and apdst), you can just shame yourself.

You are just as pathetic. Bringing in your political war crap into a disaster like this.. utter shameful. And again you are the one starting the "we pay most" crap... pathetic.. and shameful. You and people like you are a disgrace to the conservative movement world wide.

This isn't about the war, this isn't about limbaugh, this isn't about individual posters. Both of you need to get this back on topic, now

They are working together because it looks good for America.

Saving lives is the most primo PR there is. The fact that the Haiti mission isn't political is was makes it the best political capital a politician can get.

Are they doing it out of the goodness of their hearts? Sure they are. I don't doubt that for a second. Are they going to turn down the political brownie points that it will give them? Hell no!

After I saw the way that the Liberals used Katrina and Rita for political mileage, I'm not a damn bit ashamed.

nice to know the real people behind the posts. thanks.

Uhhh...rather...shame on those...since 2005 who are exploiting catastrophe, exploitations however ridiculous were acceptable up to 2005, Sean Penn considered a hero by many my proof.

They are working together because it looks good for America.

I suspect they are doing it because they feel it's important and a worthwhile cause. Kudo's to both for putting aside past enmity to do what they feel is right.

The answer to your question is that there is absolutely no doubt in anyone's mind that helping these poor people is the right course of action. It's totally crystal clear.

Our domestic policies are much more ethically complex. There are many valid and well-reasoned arguments from many angles, with decent people on all sides who can't agree on solutions.

Just goes to show you what a Great Satan we really are. Honestly the US is the only thing standing between the world and appocalypse.
And it's certainly not going to slow me down, wink wink.

This is what we Americans do.

Canada is there in a big way too!

There are 1,415 citizens missing in earthquake-ravaged Haiti as Canada continues its relief efforts and as concerns set in about health and sanitation issues in the country’s capital.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon provided a grim picture of the situation this morning in a briefing, confirming four Canadian deaths so far and 13 injuries. Over 550 Canadians have been located, he said.

“I understand the worrisome situation afflicting everyone impacted by the disaster. This is a very difficult period and some of the images we have seen and continue to see are unbearable for everyone,” Mr. Cannon said.

About 50 Canadians have taken refuge at the Canadian embassy in Port-au-Prince, he said. Another 50 citizens are being assisted elsewhere.

It is believed there are 6,000 Canadians in Haiti.

However, three Canadian Forces planes have so far been able to evacuate 272 Canadians.

<snip>

However, four flights will be made to Haiti today from Canada. He said further DART components will be brought in, including six armoured SUVs and additional personnel.

There are 144 Canadian personnel on the ground in Haiti now. Five hundred military personnel are on the two ships that left Halifax yesterday; it is expected they will be in Haiti in a few days.

When you think about it, the things that the parties constantly bicker with each other about are relatively unimportant. Abortion? Gay Marriage? Heck, there's plenty of people in the world right now who would unhesitatingly get gay-married to an aborted fetus just to have some living conditions that are one-tenth as decent as those which the average American lives in.

We may seem like a nation divided, but we're actually almost completely united on the more important issues, like making sure those in need of help receive it.

Canada is there in a big way too!

Now, I in no way mean any offense to your country, but the relationship between the U.S. and Canada really reminds me of Big Dog and Me Too.

Big Dog is a bully who doesn't hesitate to use his superior strength to intimidate other combatants. Big Dog may be smart, articulate or just plain mean, but in any case he is a remorseless fighter, brutally ripping into even the weakest of combatants. Once Big Dog securely fastens his powerful jaws on a hapless victim, Me-Too will join the attack. Me-Too is far too weak and insecure to engage in single combat, and must ally himself with Big Dog or a pack of other Warriors to bring down his quarry.

I suspect they are doing it because they feel it's important and a worthwhile cause. Kudo's to both for putting aside past enmity to do what they feel is right.

In all likelihood it's a mix of reasons, both noble and political. That doesn't make it less of a good thing, though.

Cute picture but you left out one giant Chinese Chow that owns that big dog. We are fools living in the past. Our population is the most obese in the world. We may not even have enough fit men to fill our military shoes.

We have become lazy non-producers whose intellectual outlet is watching Dancing With The Stars. You need a physician in this country? Try and find an American.

No offense to our country but we have become shadows of our former selves.
