Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year - Yahoo! News

"The extra $33 billion in 2010 would mostly go toward the expansion of the war in Afghanistan. Obama ordered an extra 30,000 troops for that war as part of an overhaul of the war strategy late last year.

Military officials have suggested that the 2011 request would top $700 billion for the first time, but the precise figure has not been made public."

Simply answer: No. End these wars. Enough is enough.

I disagree anyone with half a brain knows we are at war with a Cult of Islamic radicals and they are not like fighting a normal army with uniforms lines of battle or rules of any kind. In the fight against these radicals we have been playing by rules set up by a corrupt leader in Afghanistan and getting no where. My guess is more civilians are being killed by the enemy than troops either Ours or Afghans.
Spending s few bucks and putting a few more troops on the ground is not going end the killing.
President Hamid Karzai needs to be told he can run everything in his country except the war or we pull out and let him be killed by the Taliban.
Then we need to go to war and stopped fooling around. Troops need to go into every little village in overwhelming force swiftly unannounced round up everyone search every place and let the people know we are trying to keep them from going back under the oppression of the Taliban.
Also let the Taliban know they will be killed and they will not be treated with any respect when caught of killed.
We need to tell the world court to go to hell and kick the UN out of the US and stop funding that left wing America bashing bunch of Commies. The UN is a fraud and the World Court need to be told the same.
The world needs to be told you want to play nice fine come on down. If not then keep your mouth shut and your hateful wats to yourself or we won't play nice with you. If they mess with us we need to take them out no ***** footing around. It's time for the U.S. to stop all this B.S. about tolerance holding hands and singing stupid songs, like the Liberals want.

Re: Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year

Well I certainly expect the Democrat controlled Congress to deny this request. I mean we're suppose to be leaving Iraq and Afghanistan by now. Gitmo is suppose to be closed, because it's been a year.

Re: Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year

You did not include the relevant sentence and so your thread topic is misleading:

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will ask Congress for an additional $33 billion to fight unpopular wars in Afghanistan and Iraq on top of a record $708 billion for the Defense Department next year, The Associated Press has learned — a request that could be an especially hard sell to some of the administration's Democratic allies.

It is not just for the cost of the wars, it includes all of DoD. Here is the 2010 projected spending:

$663.7 billion (+12.7%) - Department of Defense (including Overseas Contingency Operations)

(from [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_United_States_federal_budget]2010 United States federal budget - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame])

Here it is from 2009, when the DoD and the Wars spending were separated:

$515.4 billion - United States Department of Defense
$145.2 billion(2008*) - Global War on Terror

(from [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_United_States_federal_budget]2009 United States federal budget - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame])

2009 totals $660.6 billion, roughly the same as the 2010 estimate. Se we are talking about a $33 billion increase of $145 billion for a total of $178 billion for the wars.

I think I'm going to invest in printing press oil.... those presses will be churning out more and more worthless dollars to pay for all this. Amazing how a group of idiots controlling the White House can kill a country quickly and yet make them feel better about it with a good speech. Truly, Obama is gifted.

Wanna bet?

I think we will see both the dems and reps voting for more money for this unconstitutional war.

We have the best government money can buy.

Re: Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year

I thought Obama was weak on defense.

Simple reply: No. We cannot end a war we started without victory. The United States told the world when it sent troops to these countries that we wouldnt just go in, tear **** up, and pull out. We swore to put those countries back together. Pulling out makes us look weak, shows people we cant be trusted, and makes the Taliban 2-0 versus SuperPowers.

Stay. Fight. Win. Let the pacifist idiots in this country move to France (cheap shot but deserved).

:rofl
Haha wow. That made me LOL. That IS NOT how the world works. Politics and military dont work that way. US Rules of Military Engagement are stated as thus: "US Soliders in the field shall not fired until fired upon by the enemy, nor shall any hostile action be taken preemptively against a peaceful foe." You cant just round people up. We started the war. Now we have to play by the rules.

Re: Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year

The bottom line is: We cannot afford to continue to throw money into wars that we really shouldn't be in in the first place.

You want to improve the financial situation of this country? Then stop spending billions of dollars fighting these endless wars.

Seriously. People cry about the deficit and the state of the economy and then cheer loudly and think nothing about throwing billions of dollars into these wars.

Seems a little inconsistent to me.

Re: Obama wants record $708 billion for wars next year

It's because a lot of that is based in political partisanship. Large government, big brother government, interventionist government is a bad thing. It will grow faster and faster, steal more of our freedom, liberty, and money along the way. But many of the "conservatives" have abandoned their call for constrained and reasonable government in favor of fear, overreaction, and big brother politics.

Disneydude, the bottomline is that it is not funding for wars which is the greatest threat to our budget. It is funding for entitlements which is the problem.

$145 billion to become $178 billion for the wars.

$680 billion Medicare & Medicaid (23%)
$612 billion Social Security (21%)

Between 1966 and 2006, Medicare and Social Security grew from 16% of the budget to 40%. Defense declined from 43% to 20% of the budget during that period.

Social Security spending will increase sharply over the next decades, largely due to the retirement of the baby boom generation.

Spending on Medicare and Medicaid is projected to grow dramatically in coming decades. While the same demographic trends that affect Social Security also affect Medicare, rapidly rising medical prices appear a more important cause of projected spending increases.

[ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_federal_budget]United States federal budget - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

The real bottomline is that entitlement spending is unsustainable.

We're closing in on a trillion overall for the wars. If you add up everything for the time we've been there. If I had to choose, gun to the head, Medicare of the wars....I'm going with Medicare. It may suck, but it's at least based on saving lives instead of taking them.

Neither is war spending. SS tax is still taking in more than it's paying out and SS benifits go right back into the economy. War spending is money flushed down the toilet and is funded by taking money designated for other uses.

1: We didn't start this war, Afghanistan did.

2: Right, we shouldn't let the Democrats make Afghanistan into another Vietnam. They want to, but they shouldn't be allowed.

3: Screw the world, we should do only what's in our interest. Since it's in our interest to finish the war in Afghanistan successfully, we should do what's needed. I think that starts with hauling the Panty Bomber out of the civillian court system and handing him over to the CIA for some serious waterboarding.

Ah, balls!

What we can't afford is ****ing socialism. That's what's causing this country so much damage, the totally unfounded belief that the useless are owed a living by the productive.

Want to fix the financial picture of this nation?

Pass a law saying the Federal Reserve can't have a profit, all such monies revert to the US treasury, and that the US Congress controls the salaries and bonuses paid the Chairmen of the Board of the Federal Reserve. that's the first thing.

Socialist security is unconstitutional. End it.

There's a million special interest unconstitutional programs funded by stolen taxpayer dollars. End them.

National defense is a constitutional mandate for the Federal Government. Since we're at war, do what is needed to win it. The first step? Elect a pro-American president and Congress for a change.

Oh please....spare me. You know how much of our budget goes to defense v. how little go to other programs?
If we weren't continuing to throw billions of dollars at GWB's wars that are now becoming Obama's wars, we would be able to solve most if not all of the financial problems in this country.

Its time that we start worrying about our own house rather than running around trying to fix everyone elses.

I think we will see both the dems and reps voting for more money for this unconstitutional war.

 Which one?

.

No we can't, but since we lost so many jobs all we are going to have left is government jobs and government handouts. What caused all the damage was corporate America sending jobs overseas. Even Glenn Beck knows this.

So wars never solve problems, accomplish good, or save lives?

Confronting hitler was a bad decision? Ousting Saddam was worse than letting him thrive? Protecting South Korea was pointless? Supporting West Germany was a poor choice?

Doing NOTHING often can cost more life and money than doing something soon. Not all wars are "good" wars. But you'd be a fool to disregard the things they have achieved.
