A federal appeals court on Tuesday tossed out Washington's law banning incarcerated felons from voting, finding the state's criminal-justice system is "infected" with racial discrimination.

The surprising ruling, by a three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle, said the law violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act by disenfranchising minority voters.

The decision is the first in the country's federal appeals courts to equate a prohibition against voting by incarcerated felons with practices outlawed under the federal Voting Rights Act, such as poll taxes or literacy tests.

I really despise McKenna sometimes - I have met the man several times and he's really quite slimy, more than the typical politician.

Moralize, while doing meth and diddling children, vote for a Republican.

Separate your clients from their money, and go to prison, vote for a Republican.

Cry your eyes out and throw tantrums, when out of power, vote for a Republican.

i saw the title of the thread and the first thing that comes to mind is the 9th circuit count of appeals.

Make homosexuality illegal, throw gays in prison, and they can't vote for Democrats when they get out.

Make marijuana illegal, throw hippies in prison, and they can't vote for Democrats when they get out.

Make unions illegal, throw laborers in prisons, and they can't vote for Democrats when they get out.

The pattern holds.

Yup and its no surprise this is from the most overturned court in US history either.

I wouldn't trust the 9th circut with a potato gun let alone law.

For the record, IMO, this a bad decision. I hope the next court tosses it out.

Incarcerated felons should not get to vote. They owe a debt to society and do not get the same privileges as other adults.

Paroled felons are technically still repaying their debt and should not vote.

If you've met all the conditions of your sentence and parole AND have started paying taxes for a number of years, you can reapply for voting status.

50% of the Republican base and 90% of the Democrat base...wouldn't that make the majority of people homosexual?
