The terror suspect who tried to blow up a Detroit-bound plane is the son of a Nigerian banker who alerted U.S. authorities to his "extreme religious views" months ago, it was reported Saturday.

The father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab, a former minister and chairman of First Bank in Nigeria, is shocked that his son was even was allowed to fly to the U.S., family members told the Nigerian newspaper This Day.

Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attack, warned U.S.

I agree with the father. Why was this guy even allowed to fly to the USA?
Other reports are comming out that U.S. officials have known that Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab was suspected of having terrorist ties. WTF!

I agree with you.

In the other thread, there's a lot of talk about the need for racial profiling. I honestly do not consider it necessary. We had concrete information that this guy had dangerous associations. He had been flagged.

There are tools in place to prevent these sorts of occurrences. There needs to be an investigation into who is dropping the ball.

Re: Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attac

We don't need racial profiling. What we need is law enforcement, intelligence, and command staff who are actually willing to take tip offs seriously.

Re: Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attac

Are you claiming that this was a conspiracy ? We need to know more than we do at this time but on the surface it appears that this was an isolated incident and that the failure to block the terrorist from the flight was the fault of the European country where he stopped on his way here. I do not expect much from the Nigerians from a security perspective since their expertese is pretty much nothing more than scam baiting and fraud. Maybe we need to ban any flights that either originate or even stop in Nigeria!

I don't think anyone's calling it a conspiracy; it appears to be a monumental screw-up.

I'm not sure if it's due to information not being shared, or security agencies failing to act on the information. Like I said, I'm hoping for an investigation, and that whatever failed here will be corrected to protect against this happening again.

I just heard some more on CNN and it appears that the Nigerian Fire Lap Dancer was on a "watch list " but that so called watch list apparently did not do much good. Therefore I agree with you that this does appear to be one "monumental screw-up" as you said. What I am worried about is if this is the tip of the proverial iceberg of "monumental screw-ups" !

Let's hope not !

No one said anything about racial profiling. We were talking about profling, period. Not just based on race.

Just setting the record straight.

Actually, several people specifically mentioned Arabs, repeatedly.

Actually, several people specifically mentioned Arabs, repeatedly.

Yes, because so far, Arabs are the guys who have caused most of the problems. It's basic tactics, you always go after the larger threat, first.

That is still racial profiling. Look, if you want to do it, you call it what it is.

There are more reliable indicators: associations, prior criminal history, etc.

Re: Father of Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, Nigerian terror suspect in Flight 253 attac

After this terror attack it is clear that profiling is needed.

Anyone with a Muslim name such as "Muhommed" or "Hussein" should not be allowed to fly.

No offense, but that's stupid.

Name Profiling is probably the worst idea I have ever read on this forum.

The biggest question is

Why do we miss the signs?

We did with 9/11, We did it with Fort Hood, We did it with London and Madrid, and Mumbai...

There are signs, but I think the Presidency is taking National Security harvesting (for legitimacy) over actual National Security.

All aspects of profiling should be used to detect terrorists. Name, race, nationality, dress, religion, etc.

That's easy. We don't profile potential terrorists.

That allows a terrorist to be any Name, race, nationality, dress, and religion. They may even be the fabric of your garments. I'd rather not give the FED that power.

To arrest any and everyone because they having a name, a race, a nationality, a dress, and a religion.

Thought Criminals?

Brilliant.

Those criteria are what you come up with when you think "all" aspects of profiling?

If you want to do it that way, how about we just don't let males fly. Nearly 100% of terrorist attacks are committed by men.

I consider gender as meaningful a marker as anything you listed above. (Read: not very.)

What do you suggest we do? Install mind reading machines at the gate?

No one's talking about arresting anyone. I'm only suggesting that people who fit acertain profile be looked at alot closer.

Hasan displayed plenty of warning signs. But, everyone is so damn afraid of being labeled a racist, that no one had the guts to say anything.

No, those are just a few. Notice I put, "etc.", at the end?

Yes, males who fit the other criteria. You're correct.

Yes, males who fit the other criteria. You're correct.

Then why not start with more meaningful criteria, such as associations with terrorist groups, attendance at mosques that have been flagged as having terrorist associations, or having moved from one country to another?

I find the criteria you jump for first nothing short of useless.

Ok, sure. I don't have a problem with that, either. Those aren't on the spot, appearance based clues, but that's a good idea.

How about we look for people from majority Islamic countries, with Islamic names, getting on American flights who may have a one way ticket and no luggage?

Or, someone who fits that profile, has a Pakistani, Jordanian, Saudi Arabian, etc. passport and is flying from New York to Boston?

There are literally thousands of common sense clues that people could look for.

How pathetic they let this man even enter the United States. I have an aunt from Canada who tried coming down here for my brother's wedding. She's 62 years old and was detained for 8 hours by US Customs and Border Protection before they decided to blacklist her name.

Why? Because she went to Saudi Arabia for Hajj pilgrimmage and then Jordan to bury her father almost a year ago.

Thats reason enough for me.

Which is why I said - 'pathetic'.

A 62 year old Canadian woman in a wheelchair is more of a threat than an adult male where intelligence knows of his religious extremism.

Only in America.

The TSA is pulling old white ladies in wheel chairs out of line and searching them so as to appear to be fair. That is BS. Since you seem to have a problem with America maybe you should consider one with less freedom such as Saudi Arabia, Yeman, Somolia, Iran, or Pakistan.
