The plane was from North Korea, and it was most likely flying to the Middle East to dispense these weapons to terrorists.

Thai Television station TPBS showed footage of the five men detained and trucks loaded with the weapons being driven out of the airport to a military base in the nearby province of Nakhon Sawan. It said the cache amounted to 35 tons of weapons including rocket-propelled grenades.

That's 35 tons of stuff that can kill American soldiers, or innocent women and children.

Why in the hell are we playing softball with North Korea? Don't you think that, if we take North Korea out, the world would be a much safer place?

The trouble with that scenario is that they’re to damn close to South Korea. Might be a good time to arm up Japan again though.

As long as China remains protective, NK is untouchable.

We can't. We shot our wad in Iraq and Afghanistan and we're broke, but more importantly even though we could put the hurt on NK, SK would be in shambles as fast as you could say launch 1, 2, 3. And we'd have to reinstate the draft which wouldn't bother me but the whining from politicians and those that wouldn't want to be drafted would be deafening. Thousands of Dick Cheneys with connections probably would have to go either.

Our hands are tied with NK just as they are with Iran.

We're China's #1 customer, they're not going to stand up against us.

The problem with North Korea is Kim Jong Il is he's still breathing, and the problem with China is there are too damn many of them to fight a war of attrition with.

Nuclear options are not part of any sane strategy by us the Russians or the Chinese because everyone knows if that balloon ever goes up everyone on earth can be caught in the cross fire that would occur. Russia suffers from modern technology envy because their infrastructure is so badly decayed and in serious need of repair.

China has been playing catchup like mad and we have been helping them by providing the funding they have used to build up and modernize their military and they have been using that same money to loan to us because we are too stupid to run the Country like a business.

North Korea needs to be dealt with covertly and in such a way that it looks like it was from within, leaving us with plenty of room for plausible deniability should those carrying out the plan be caught.
Some stupid President in the past created an order about not taking out the bad guys. But we do it with the Predator strikes. If I were in charge that would be quietly covertly rescinded and only a hand full of trusted people know about it.
When National security is at stake or as in the case of a nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction proliferation needs to be dealt with, it need to be done quickly and with not fan fair.

I said long before North Korea set off their first A-bomb they should have had an accidental detonation that would have taken out most of the radical leadership and all of their scientists. We could have shown so much sympathy it would bring a tear to ones eye.

I can see the headlines. "U.S. morns along with the entire Nation of North Korea over the lose of so many in this tragic accident" boo hoo.

Now we need some accidents for a number of people who threaten us and world peace. Planes go down mysteriously over the ocean all the time, and we recently missed chances at Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Moammar Kadafi, and Hugo Chavez.
These guys would have made great real world test subjects for that 747 with the killer Lazarm in the nose and would leave no trace other than burn marks and that could be chalked up to a fuel tank explosion like we've all been told brought down another plane a few years ago. That worked even in the face of eye witnesses who claimed they saw a missile.

Oh but I'm just dreaming that we had leadership with imagination and balls to do something.

Trolling? I don't think so. I responded with my opinion. You're the one that attacked me here with a one line response that does not respond to the thread. If anything your response is closer to trolling.

Care to add your opinion or are you just going to attack me?

BTW I was a weapons specialist in the military. I think I know a little bit about weapons and what they can do in the wrong hands. But I also know what a disaster attacking NK would be to SK being how close the DMZ is to a large population center.

seems to me the articles says it was going to sri lanka, so they could've been re-arming the tamil tigers, or it could have gone to pakistan, who pose more of a threat to india than america

Well it looks like the Thia Military just got some new Weapons and the Thia Airforce has got themselves a new Il-76K to add to the Transport Wing. But if it was me I would scrap the Il-76 since they don't have such a great safety record.

I agree with you 100 percent. If we had taken out Saddam covertly it would have saved a lot of lives and a big hit on our treasury. On the other hand did you know that officially President Ford signed executive order 11905 prohibiting the assassination of government leaders? Of course I'm sure that can easily circumvented as the CIA pretty much does whatever it pleases with impunity.

NK has nuclear weapons and the aformentioned protection of china. Iraq isn't a factor here. Afghanistan isn't a factor here. They never were.

You're right Dutch. One you have nuclear weapons the U.S. won't touch you. That's why Iran is racing to have that capability. ;)

True enough, and they'll get it, I'm guessing within the next two years. Look for israel to act within one and war and financial instability in the rest of the world as the price of oil skyrockets. Not a pretty scenario. I can only hope I'm wrong.

To bad they didn't list all of the weapons besides the RPGs which I suspect are either the Type 69-I or could be PF-89 which would be a very troubling issue.

If it the PF-89 then this means that NK has started to step up there arms suppling with stuff that can really hurt the West.

Any idea where I can get information on type of RPGs?

We're China's #1 customer, they're not going to stand up against us.

I, begrudgingly, agree with apdst. We're too much of an economic asset to China.

One vantage point of these militant organizations like hizb'allah, qa'ida al-jihad, etc. is that they're radical groups of extremists hell-bent on destroying statism.

A second vantage point, are that these are the groups that are paid to fight the proxy wars between hostile nations. Saudi Arabia fights the rebels in Yemen who get most of their resources from the Qud in Iran (same for hizb'allah, same for Jesh al mehdi in Iraq, same for some aspects of the Taliban and qa'ida al-jihad.

I've written extensively of the anarchism embedded within these organizations, most of which stems directly from their Qutb, Mawdudi, Wahab, etc. political philosophy. But when you do objective research on the actions of the organizations you find that they are extension of the violence that used to dominate Nation-state relations.

Interesting.

The problem with North Korea is that there are no easy solutions. They likely have operational nuclear weapons, and even without them they hold Seoul hostage with artillery. They already face extreme sanctions. I don't have a problem with assassination from a moral standpoint, but it is still a poor strategy. It risks starting a war if screwed up, and it would be foolish to rely in the CIA given their track record. Even if successful, the results wouldn't be very useful. The mostly likely outcomes would either be a smooth transfer of power to the next dictator, or a power vacuum with civil war. That could easily lead to the usual "I'll consolidate power by starting a war with an outside war" type of thinking. Although simply doing nothing at waiting isn't exactly a bold solution, its hard to find better options at the moment.

My point exactly. Sometimes it is better to wait it out and wait for them to implode or reform. We didn't attack the Soviet Union and it turned out for the better.

I believe Iran will have another revolution for the better, but we have to be patient.
