President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize acception speech

Why did he get this?

j-mac
i'm not so sure the prize was deserved, but wth? he certainly has made a great effort to reach out to other nations and is clearly on a mssion to promote peace. the prize is not based solely on accomplishments, but rather on the process. now, you can argue he didn't deserve it, but the silly 10 day argument was just that, silly. he wasn't awarded the prize based on his presidency.

The Nobel Peace Prize is an award presented to either an individual or an organization in accordance with Alfred Nobel’s living will. Alfred Nobel, creator of the five Nobel Prizes, was a Swedish inventor and industrialist. He disposed the Nobel Peace Prize in his will to be awarded to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses." The Nobel Peace Prize differs from the Nobel Prizes in literature, physics, chemistry, and medicine or physiology in that it may be presented not only to individuals, but also to organizations that are actively engaged in a process or effort that intends to promote world peace. The prize can be awarded for current efforts, rather than for having accomplished a goal or resolved an issue.

I don't think you need to justify the decision by the Nobel prize committee. And it's not Obama's fault that a few Norwegians decided to give him the prize a little prematurely. It would have been a terrible insult if he had turned it down, so he had to accept it. And it's a tribute to America as much as to Obama. He can now work to earn it over the next three (or seven ;)) years.

In my opinion he gave a good speech and if his policies are successful then in a few years this debate about whether or not he deserved it will be irrelevant.

Doesn't the NPrize Comm need to justify? I mean, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize just gave a speech on how war is necessary!

I think he gave a wonderful speech, but speeches are irrelevant, you are correct. But when you say policies are successful, what policies? It's just been announced a Predator strike has killed another top al-Qaeda official in Pakistan. So essentially, while Obama was accepting the Nobel Peace Prize, he was ordering strikes into Pakistan killing al-Qaeda and civilian alike.

Just to get the words all in order...the weapon used here was called a Predator drone...firing hellfire missiles....in other words, we have here the Nobel Peace Prize winner...firing a drone....and then remotely having it torch off a hellfire missile(great name).

Some Peace Prize winner.

Ok, in the part you bolded, could you give examples of what Obama has done to fit into this category?

Obama Awarded Peace Prize - WSJ.com

Agot Valle, a Norwegian politician and member of the committee, said in a phone interview that the choice of Mr. Obama was primarily related to his stance on nuclear disarmament. Ms. Valle said the committee last met on Oct. 5, and that the decision to choose him was unanimous. She said his recent work at the United Nations in late September to pass a resolution calling for a strengthened Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty helped his candidacy.

"There is a criticism about the war in Afghanistan, and I understand that," said Ms. Valle. "But this was primarily an award on his work on, and commitment to, nuclear disarmament -- and his dialogue. Of course there will be criticism, because he hasn't achieved his goals yet. It will take time, but this is a support."

You do realize he has not disarmed a single nuclear missile right?

So his question still stands. What has he done?

I think it was a great "in your face" speach to a bunch of european snobs, and for once obama didn't denigrate the us. Kudos to him.

just because his efforts haven't yet borne fruit does not mean they don't exist.

So they gave him the award based on "Hope, and Change"...... This is just another example of Euro liberal based elites looking for reason to further agendas. Now it seems all one has to do is have flowery rhetoric.

Somehow, I don't think that is what Mr. Nobel envisioned.

Is this the beginning of giving a trophy of participation in the world stage? It doesn't work for kids, and won't work here either.

Are you for real?

President Obama has achieved nothing thus far. He is a one term president who has the lowest approval rating of any American president at this point of the presidency.

With that said, the speech he gave yesterday was excellent. He said what needed to be said to the world. Afghanistan is a just war, There is evil in the world, and the United States of America has helped underwrite global security for more than six decades with the blood of our citizens.

We are the good guys. What would the world without America, without freedom, liberty, and the human rights.

Most liberals probably fainted at the sound of these words.

exactly

and obama's the most whacked out of all libs

someone musta really had to bitch slap that teleprompter to get it to say those things

His Acception Speech Rocked

the speech was nice, it expressed a very conservative view of foreign policy

unfortunately, it was delivered by an extremist lib who doesn't mean it and is willing to say anything

It wasn't a very conservative speech IMO.

It wasn't far left or far right. People have become so partisan that they don't listen to what other people are saying anymore and they just put labels on things.

Sending more troops to Afghanistan doesn't make Obama a conservative. And talking about the environment doesn't make him a liberal. Talking about the need to fight terrorists or to defend freedom is not a conservative position. Obama just stated the obvious truth. Only the far left and far right can't seem to understand that. Democrats should stop criticizing him just because Bush may have said some things that sounded similar. And Republicans shouldn't say that because he is a liberal he can't really mean it when he says he'll defend American interests. That's just messed up.

Obama can stand for liberal ideals and still support all those things. That's just common sense.

The above statement in red should read..... We are the good guys. What would the world without America, without freedom, liberty, and human rights look like?

It seems I have bumbled another post. These things do happen from time to time to the metally challenged. Please forgive my ineptness.

I liked his speech.

Except the global warming BS but his points about war and when it is justified were dead on.

I know, he's got good speechwriters, doesn't he? Man, combine that with reliable teleprompters and you get a great speech! :rofl
