Virginia Veteran Wins Battle to Keep His Flagpole in Yard

I'd say he's earned it.

From who? For all I know he molests his grandkids and then kills cats in his back yard. I don't give respect to people I don't know anything about. And the respect I'm talking about doesn't extend to him moving into a neighborhood that has guidelines for how houses are to look. Being a veteran is not some 'do what you want' card.

He earned your right to insult his honor on this thread.

What a weak argument. You don't know him, so he might molest kids  He's more than just a veteran. Make an exception and let a CMOH recipient fly a damn American flag on a pole. He's earned at least that much.

I noticed the HOA was unavailable for comment. To me this means they ran into the buzz saw of public opinion and I am glad it happened.

Too bad our current Messiah & dictator and his devils disciples don't give a damn about what WE THE PEOPLE think, want, or need.

I am very happy about this for the hero.

You are doing it again. This has nothing to do with Obama. You have a serious fixation on him, much moreso than those for whom you claim(falsely) that he is their messiah.

You didn't watch he vid, did you? I suggest you do, then re-evaluate your opinion of this man.

Totally agree. I am on the board of directors of my HOA. I would NEVER EVER cave in this circumstance. Sorry, you agreed to the rules when you bought your house. YOU LOSE.

The guy is a patriot and most of all a Medal of Honor winner........If you can't make and exception for him...Unbelieveable!!!!

It is obvious a lot of you are clueless when it comes to a HOA.....The people that are members of the association make the rules..........If they don't like it they can vote it out..........Its obvious that most of the members of this association were Liberals who hate this country and our military.....This poor guy just bought a home in the wrong area...........I am glad he won out............
Wah wah wah. This coming from the wannabe terrorist. :rofl

But anyway, good for the guy!

Unfortunately, this seems to be a minority opinion.

Seeing what Navy Pride wrote above, I am happy that I have him on ignore. His BS sickens me.

The article in today's Washington Post indicated that the guy thought what he had done was legal. His attorney reported this. Since when is ignorance of the law a valid excuse?

The sacrifices of our military have given the left the right to bash our military. Yet, they get highly agitated if any of us conservatives dare to mention Obama's name and label him as a communist. I'm sure I will be asked what his name has to do with this thread. Well, I ask the lefty, who broached the subject, what child molesting has to do with one of America's greatest heroes?

What do have against the American flag?

A person buying a house should be allowed to not join the HOA if he desires. The seller should not be penalized or otherwise forced by the HOA to force the buyer into joining.

in other words, the HOA membership for communities of single family houses, not condos or townhouses, should be on a voluntary basis with any member able to withdraw without penalty.

Come on, people, what the hell has happened to America when your neighbors can control the color you paint your house, your gardening choices, and your basketball backboard, let alone you flag pole!

I never thought I'd be agreeing with Scarecrow on anything but this is spot on.

how can a flagpole with a flag on it be aesthetically unpleasant, unless its a really stupid flag, which it wasn't

LOL ..yeah, I'm sure ;)

What they didn't like was some 21-foot flagpole sticking out like a sore thumb.

Size ..that's how.

why? did some of the member of the HOA feel their masculinity threatened by a 21 foot vaguely phallic shaped object?

its not really that tall, its only 3 and 1/3 of me standing on each others shoulders, do they also object to tall trees and light poles

Navy, I appreciate what you're saying. He probably does deserve an exception, especially at 90. But the HOA would run into the problem of other homeowners complaining, blah blah blah. I was on the board of our HOA, and I can tell there is politics and rule misused from time to time. I wasn't in charge of convenant enforcement, but people pay their fees to have rules applied equally. None of us know the particulars about that HOA, and their attorney probably told them to remain silent.

But you can't just think of the one person because he's an CMH winner. Signing the HOA convenants is a binding contract. The HOA specifically said they were not against the flag, but the pole only; lest someone think they're unpatriotic. I think they gave in due to the publicity and maybe enough homeowners called in giving them grief so they could backoff. Most of the time it's not personal when these rules are applied.

If you don't like the rules of a particular HOA, then don't move there.

Nope...just follow the rules and regulations he signed on for, like everyone else. Like Hatuey said "Being a veteran is not some 'do what you want' card."

WHY!!! Why should he get an exception over anyone else?
(note...this a general reply, not particularly directed to this poster)

LOL...beware of the falling sky, but I agree wholeheartedly with this post.

Nothing. I have something against sticking a flag pole on your property without seeking permission beforehand.

Another brilliant post by American. ;)

And that's where fire comes in!

But while I understand the point of HOA's, I in principle hate them. It's a government, and like all government is dangerous because it quickly grows and overtakes boundaries it wasn't meant. Mostly they were to protect home value by not allowing property becoming delapitdated. Fair enough, but I think it needs to stop there. In the end, it's your property and you need to have freedom on it. I won't ever buy a HOA house if possible, but there's the rub. If possible. Those things grow like weeds, and at some point there may be no option of home purchase without joining an HOA. At that point, we're at an entirely different circumstance.

And that is my problem with any HOA. I would never move into a neighborhood where my neighbors could decide what and what I cannot put in my own yard. After all, if I buy a place, I want it to be MY property, not some communal ownership which, if you look at the face of it, is a form of Communism.

I disagree with you, but I give you kudos for putting together a well thought out explanation of your position. Damn it, if you keep this up, I won't be able to joke about your short posts any more.
