A bomb blast caused the derailment of a Russian express train, killing at least 26 people, intelligence officials say.

The Nevsky Express derailed in remote countryside on Friday night as the train travelled between the capital Moscow and St Petersburg.

Investigators found "elements of an explosive device" at the scene, the Russia's federal investigative committee said in a statement.

A senior intelligence official said a bomb had derailed the locomotive.

Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia's domestic intelligence service told Russian President Dmitry Medvedev that a bomb equivalent to seven kilos (15 lb) of TNT had been detonated, Reuters reported.

There was no immediate confirmed claim of responsibility for the attack.

Russia's prosecutor-general has opened a criminal case on terrorism charges, Russian news agencies report.

Hundreds of rescuers and officials worked throughout the night at the scene near the town of Bologoye in Tver region.

Some reports say that as many as 39 people have died.

The train was carrying more than 650 people. More than 90 are in hospital, some of them taken there by helicopter.

Some passengers reported a loud bang occurring just before the derailment.

And Russian television channels broadcast a recording of a mobile phone call from the train driver to the emergencies ministry.

"There was an explosion under the locomotive," he said. "I do not know what we hit. We are derailed. The locomotive and carriages, I do not know yet what else, everything is in smoke. "

The train, known as the Nevsky Express, was travelling on one of the busiest rail routes in Russia, and Friday evening is peak travel time.

In 2007, a bomb on the same line derailed a train, injuring nearly 30 passengers.

Two men suspected of having links to Chechen rebels were accused of planting a bomb next to the track.

It is proven again and again, no nation is safe from terrorists.

Not longer than a couple of weeks ago, the leader of Russia's special forces was killed in Chechnya....again.

At least the Russians are willing to admit it WAS terrorism...unlike certain other countries I could name, that before the facts are even in quickly assert "This was NOT terrorism..."

Because if a terrorist action occurred in the US during an administration's watch that can not be blamed on a previous one they have obviously failed at one of the most important reasons for having a federal government.

So 9/11 was something that investigation shows started under the Clinton administration (when the visas were issued and they enterred the country) so Bush was off the hook from it.

Ft Hood, on the other hand, had several red flags and signals that were going on right up to the moment of the killings that no one followed up on for various reasons (political correctness being a generic term for the majority of them). So it can't be blamed on Bush so it is not a terrorist action but a failure by local officials to prevent a criminal act.

It is all about CYA (cover your a**).

If it was terrorism, I wonder if it was Iran as punishment - and a message - for not providing the S-300 anti-aircraft system as contracted.

I doubt any direct link to Iran, although a convoluted one may eventually be found. I would probably point towards Chechnya or some other ex-republic.

If a terror attack took today by someone connected to a sleeper cell who's members received their visas during the Clinton administration so damn fool would say what? It's Clinton's fault. And yes I can see that happening but it would only come from retards less concerned about solving the problem and more concerned about assessing blame or just casting aspersions at their own perceived domestic enemies.
Truth is there are things in this world that don't readily mix, oil & water, Islams & Christians, outside rule of one Nation over another.

Our own Declaration of Independence spells it out better than anything else could ever hope to concerning that Home rule.

Russia can expect more of the same, just as we can a massive increase in terrorism here now that the word has gone out that Obama is a terrorist sympathizer, as demonstrated in his moving the trials of the GITMO 5 to N.Y.C. so they can all get off on technicalities he will then blame on Bush.

Chechnya is the most likely source.
