Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Thursday the government knows it can no longer postpone clearing the clouds over Turkish democracy and that it is committed to moving forward in this direction.

“We cannot walk toward the future if justice and freedoms remain up for debate. We cannot continue on our path if faith and opinions are kept under pressure. Turkey has to face up to its realities and should do it in a fair way,” Erdoğan said in his address to the nation on the occasion of Kurban Bayram, or the Feast of the Sacrifice.

Recalling that the government launched a democratic initiative aimed at equalizing the democratic standards of the country and ending the terror problem, Erdoğan said: “We believe that the solution to all sorts of problems can be found through a functioning democracy. We’ll of course continue our efficient struggle against those who choose terror as a means. But we will not concede Turkey’s integrity.”

Hinting that the state had also used some illegal means in its fight against terror in the past, Erdoğan promised that they would clear this darkness within the state and make it more credible and stable.

Erdoğan said the government was also planning to enact measures to change the social and economic conditions of the country that are believed to be the root causes of terrorism. “We will terminate all sorts of discriminatory practices and initiatives that hurt societal harmony. We’ll establish democracy, justice, equality and freedom in their purest forms,” he said. He also described the democratic initiative of the government as an open-ended process.

This is what all muslim terrorist leaders state before turning as far away from democracy as possible, instituting repression and control via sharia: one man, one vote, one time.

No wonder Turkey was one of the first nations to recognize the illegal Hamas terrorist government, and is coming full circle.

I kind of thought this was broadly speaking what Obama promised both in his campaign and ultimate win of Presidential vote.

Obama has not done anything to curtail democracy since he took office.

aaannndd as much as i hate this Islamist fool, he has expanded the rights of the people probably more and better than any Turkish government in the past decade or so.

Well, why are those politicians openly supporting and rallying for the PKK? 30,000 people have died since they took up arms, and advocating them is dispecable. I have no sympathies for DTP.

I mean, their rights have been expanded significantly, its a stab in the back. They should be supporting the country, not rallying against it. Ahmet Turk has no shame.

You could say the same about Sinn Féin and its a good thing we never banned them (the troubles probably wouldn't have ended if we did) As the article says its unwise to cut off a potential channel for negotiation. Seams a pretty mixed message if you ask me "hey we,re expanding democracy so why dont you shut the **** up?!) If free speech doesn't extend to speech the government doesn't like then does that not defeat the object.

I dont condone the PKK for killing civilians but at the same time I think Kurds can be forgiven for bearing a grudge. It wasn't that long ago (I.E the mid 90s) that the Turkish army was burning down entire villages. Thats not the kind of thing that people forget easily.
